Vick Calls Dog Fighting “Terrible”

Written by PETA | August 27, 2007

Now we can say what we couldn’t mention before. PETA has been talking to Michael Vick’s personal representatives, legal team, and more insiders for weeks. We asked for two things over all others: We wanted Michael Vick to tell impressionable young people not to follow in his footsteps, and we wanted him to openly condemn dog fighting. Today, in his statement, he answered both those requests, calling dogfighting “terrible” and telling kids to pay attention and not go down the same road he did. Mr. Vick also said he has found Jesus. Christian or not, we can agree that if Mr. Vick now asks himself “WWJD?” he will not be led back to dogfighting.

To urge the NFL to speak out against dogfighting as well, please click here.

And you can read the comments that PETA President Ingrid Newkirk made last week on the importance of Vick speaking out against dogfighting here.

I think that if Michael Vick is truly repentant he will realize that he deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law and that he will spend the rest of his life and his last penny helping animals especially pit bull dogs and others.

  • Bill says:

Appology was nonsense. He appologized not to his dogs but to children. We all know that when adults address children the adults are often less than candid. Vick wasn’t sorry while it was going on. He wasn’t even sorry when he first got caught. At the time he ws boasting how he would beat the charges. Only after he ran out of options only after he pled guilty while he is waiting for the judge to decide his punishment only now does he stand before the public and say Look how sorry I am. Vick just wants to weasle out of taking responsibilty for his actions. If he wants my forgiveness he will first need a serious act of contrition. Still waiting to see that.

jeffery roejames arthur et al You really wrote some stupid comments that serve no purpose. If you hate animals PETA animal advocates why blog here??? Save your hateful energy to help all those people you purport to care about. Would you help animal advocates or PETA members in need? I think not. The only racists idiots and low lifes are you!! At least we walk the walk and talk the talk and ACTIVELY go out there to help the animals that we love. Suffering is not limited to species it’s only limited to humans with small minds. Instead of posting hateful KKKlike messages on this board spend your time rescuing people. How many homeless have you brought into your home??? How much money and time do you donate to help people? Do you help “white” people? Why not join the NAACP and try to change it into a respectable nonracist group? And Roe some cannibals feel that way about you too. All of you need an education and help in developing an iota of sensibilities for others so abused as are the animals. With people like this in the world no wonder the animals’ suffering continues and is so overwhelming !!! Animal Liberation Now!!

  • Blkbutrfly says:

All of yall are ridiculous. You’re doing all of this for a bunch of dogs. I don’t see any of you with your little signs and big mouths protesting in front of Dictator George Bush about this stupid unnecessary war. I don’t see any of you protesting in Jena Louisiana for the Jena 6 who show how racist and idiotic this country really is. On top of that you probably saved the animals after hurricane Katrina. Did you help any human build a house or find some peace of mind for themselves. Since when is a doganimal more important than that of a human. Please get a grip!!!!

  • 007 says:

lonz love… do you really thnk you’re impressing anyone with your ignorance? NOT! Get over yourself and LISTEN up! Pay attention to something other than your sick mindset and evil insticts and try reeeeeal hard to understand… that ANY cretin who can abuse torture and kill an animal is also capable of doing the same to humans because there IS a correlation between animal abuse and human psychotic behaviour. Anyone who chooses to ignore this reality is a menace or a potential menace to society and to themselves. case in point MVick

It is great that people form different ethnic groups are participating in this conversation even if the subject is brain dead sports divaMichael Vick. A little depressing if you ask me..but it is maybe a beginning for minority folks to learn that there is such a thing as Animal Rights movement. This event however should be careful analyzed by PETA and all other ARAW groups across U.S. I believe that this IS a wake up call for them and an opportunity to start a serious conversation on important issues like racesocial classpower at home. Ingrid Newkirk Pacella among others should take notice of the avalanche of emails form angry African Americans and ask themselves WHY educated people of color is almost absent form this debate. What this REALLY means..I believe this is an important question to ask among ARAW folks.. Posing such questions is especially important for PETA who indeed has a VERY WHITE face. PETA SHOULD at least try to remedy their white face problem by having a serious conversation among themselves. If PETA hopes to survive and become a real influence on American pop culture and elsewhere in the world…then they better start asking the right questions and getting their act together!or should I say STUNT.. There are more than a hundred millions of colored people in this country waiting to be educated Ingrid..hello! wake up and smell the coffee!!… Here is a hint Look at the British ARAW model…maybe.. you guys still have time to avoid becoming old news… Best Gerardo Tristan.

  • Pamela Locke says:

As many others have said before meIt’s only now that he can show remorse and guiltafter he’s backed into a corner. Where was this soft side of Vick when the dog’s were being tortured? Let’s count on the Judge to do the right thing!

  • Jamison says:

Wow…Im sure there is not a single one of you out there that can say that they have never made a mistake. We can not let our emotions over come a persons right for a second chance. “And when you stand praying if you hold anything against anyone forgive him so that your Father in heaven may forgive you for your sins.” Mark 1125. Vick made a huge first step in a very long road to recovery. Michael Vick is not a dog but he is a human who has some certain level of rights. Michael will do his time for this terrible act and who are we to say whether he meant his apologie andor if he dosent deserves a second chance? Vick has began to attempt to use his mistakes to prevent further dogfighting. With statements like the ones below you all or no better than any sin in existence.

  • KJ says:

Michael Vick should be made to do community service for the next 5 years. I say 4 or 5 days a week cleaning up dog poop at a local SPCA is a righteous punishment. He should also have to donate $250000 to the SPCA for each dog found alive or dead on his property. Hey NFL find another player for your organization. Forget about Michael Vick.

  • stoptorture says:

As I wrote to Peta one of the most important things they could get Vick to do is to get his huge negative spotlight to include some things outside dog fighting such as vivisection of dogs and other atrocities that are on the same level or worse than the dog fighting that there is such hypocricy in society that just as the dog fighting is wrong it is hypocritical for people to accept rodeos and KFC and vivisection of dogs and others. If people are against animal cruelty especially for entertainment or especially for dogs then that needs to be as CONSISTENT as possible and applied everywhere. Vick is the best person to point out that just as wrong as what he did these other things should not be given acceptance because that is part of what confuses some people into accepting any animal cruelty when they see it accepted all throughout society. He should be able to point out that not only is the dog fighting terribly wrong but he should feel responsible now for telling the truth about all these tortures. How can you tell people it is ok to shoot bullets and arrows into deer for enjoyment which is why they do it but then say it is wrong to dog fight? Society is sending a mixed message and any hate on Vick should be directed equally to these other people and parts of society. Vick is the best person now to make this case and not to excuse himself but to truthfully realize himself that this is a problem in our society.

  • rosalind says:

Vick said his actions were IMMATURE!!!!????HUH???? How about disgusting and dispicable and cruel? His “apology” leaves a lot to be desired. As a devout Catholic I am having a hard time believing Vick’s sudden claim to have found Jesus. I believe he is using that to make others feel guilty for not forgiving him. He needs to apologize to the DOGS involved..he needs to work at shelters and visit schools and communities to teach others that dog fighting is disgusting and wrong. He needs to do A LOT more than claim he found the Lord and say he was immature!!!!!!!!! RK

vick fked up. who cares. iam sure all of us fked up. i for one forgive vick and think he should be able to play football. let vick do his time and pay his fine. you people are leaving comments and what not. saying that vick is scum and should not live for his crimes. i think vick will learn something from this lets give him another chance. it is only dog fighting. dog fighting has been going longer then all of have been alive.

  • Brittany Justice says:

I certainly do not think that Vick is truly sorry about the ruthless crime that he committed. Why is it that everytime a criminal is indicted for their mistake they seem to always claim that they found Jesus? Shouldn’t an athlete already know about the good man upstairs? He should be punished for his actions not only by the justice system but also by having to volunteer at a animal shelter. UNTIL I SEE HIS REPENTENCE he is nothing more than a lying piece of shit person that deserves to die a harmful death….

Ignoring domestic abuse is the shame of the sports world Mike Bianchi SPORTS COMMENTARY August 5 2007 If only Michael Vick had been arrested for abusing women instead of dogs. He’d still be on the football field today. He’d still have the love and adoration of his fans. And yes he’d still have his Nike deal. Such is the shame of professional sports. Dogs are treated with more respect than women. “It makes me angry that the sports world gets outraged when an athlete tortures a dog but nobody says a word when an athlete abuses his wife or girlfriend” says Carol Wick who operates Harbor House a local shelter for battered women and children. “Not that we shouldn’t be outraged by animal abuse but shouldn’t we be just as outraged with spousal abuse?” Actually shouldn’t we be more outraged? Don’t get me wrong the accusations against Vick are deplorable but let’s be honest shall we? Dogfighting is a much less serious societal problem than wifebeating. Just look at the rosters throughout sports today and you will see they are littered with players who have been arrested for violence against women. The Tampa Bay Bucs who are training right here at familyfriendly Disney have two guys on their team reserve running backs Michael Pittman and Lionel Gates who have been arrested on domesticviolence charges. Gates was placed in a pretrial intervention program recently and ordered to take angermanagement courses after being arrested for an altercation with a pregnant woman in March. Pittman’s case was much more high profile. He spent time in jail three years ago after being indicted on two counts of aggravated assault for intentionally ramming his Hummer into a car carrying his wife 2yearold son and the couple’s baby sitter. It was the fourth time Pittman had been arrested on domesticabuse charges and that doesn’t even count the “30 or 40 prior domesticviolence situations” that his wife Melissa told police never were reported. Michael Vick who is accused of endangering the lives of dogs may never play football again. Michael Pittman who endangered the lives of his wife and son got a threegame suspension. Can you believe it? “It makes not a lick of sense” says Don Yaeger coauthor of the book Pros and Cons The Criminals Who Play in the NFL. “Why are we less concerned about former Dolphins player Lamar Thomas who kept right on playing even though he shoved his pregnant fiancee’s head through a window than we are about Michael Vick who we’re ready to run out of the game? “I’m not saying we shouldn’t be repulsed by dogfighting. I have two dogs and I love dogs. But I also love pregnant women.” When Yaeger was doing research for his book a few years ago he did criminal background checks on every player on openingday NFL rosters and discovered 21 percent had rap sheets. And far and away the most prevalent crime among NFL players he found was domestic violence and spousal abuse. Isn’t it about time for the NFL and all other professional sports leagues to start taking hardline stances against athletes who not only abuse dogs but those who abuse women? It’s understandable that PETA has organized successful demonstrations outside the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp to protest Vick but where are the picketers and protesters boycotting teams with players who terrorize women? The statistics and newspaper accounts about domestic abuse are frightening. Nationally about onethird of murdered women an average of 1200 a year are killed by an intimate partner. And according to Wick all but one of the women who have been murdered in Orlando this year have been killed by scorned husbands or boyfriends. Like the 22yearold college student who was shot to death in College Park by an exboyfriend who later killed himself. Or the mother of two daughters who was shot twice in the head in a Walgreens parking lot by her estranged husband. In Orlando alone there are a thousand hotline calls per night concerning domestic violence. The 88bed Harbor House is filled beyond capacity and must turn away hundreds of abused women and children per month. “Domestic violence is a huge problem in our society” Wick says “and professional sports needs to be at the forefront of helping to stop it. If a football player with the Tampa Bay Bucs can do it and get away with it a batterer in the shadows is probably thinking ‘Why can’t I do it too?’ ” There was a time not so long ago when abused women were treated like dogs by professional sports leagues. Now sadly they are treated worse.

  • Kim Hill says:

I he should donate some money to help animals. Then maybe we can believe he is speaking honestly and I hope he does go to prison

  • Denise Vidrine says:

Vick is only sorry because he got caught. I did not think his statement yesterday was sincere. How could you use the word immature for such an act like dogfighting? I don’t think he should be allowed to play in the NFL. I think he should donate millions to PETA and do public announcement on TV denouncing dogfighting.

  • Bigb says:

PETA is a very good and effective organization. My main concern here is PETA’s ineffectiveness at stopping dog fighting as a whole. The PETA organization are opportunist in my opinion. They saw an icon in Michael Vick and went for the jugular. These so call animal rights activist are hypocrites at best. Their personal lives are anything but correct. The sad thing about it is PETA put more value on animal rights than human rights. If there were a pole taken of the PETA members a bet almost none of them were activist during the past and present segregation movement. To some it up PETA give animal more rights than minorities. This world is upside down and there will be order in the last days.

  • victoria says:

What makes anyone who disapproves of what he did racist? No matter who he is what he did was without a doubt cruel. That he is so prominent does make it much worse because he is unfortunately a role model to many children. Of course vick’s abilities to help his team to the superbowl are much more important to most than his crime. Take away his livelihood and he would then certainly be sorry. Most likely he does not know how to do much else.

  • 007 says:

james love what’s YOUR point or do you even know? • Lena says:

What I haven’t heard anybody comment on is that people who kill animals fit a profile for serial killer behaviour. I mean aren’t people scared that this guy who can kill innocent defenseless dogs is walking free? I mean how much would it really take for this guy to start killing other animals humans etc. This story makes me sick.

  • Ann says:

PETA SUPPORTERS!! I THINK YOU ARE A BUNCH OF HYPROCRITES. YOU ONLY WANT TO CRUIFY MICHAEL VICK BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. I VERY DISAPPOINTED IN RUSSUEL SIMMONS AND AL SHARPTON. TWO MEN AT ONE POINT I RESPECTED. WHERE ARE YOU WHEN THE CIRCUS ANIMALS ARE GETTING ABUSE THE COCKFIGHTINGDOG RACES. I THINK THAT MIKE APOLOGY WAS ACCEPTED AND RESPECTED. WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. I THINK PEOPLE CAN LEARN FROM THE MIKE VICK INCIDENT. I THINK MIKE VICK WOULD BE BETTER DOING THINGS WITH PETA AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAN IN JAIL. REMEMBER WE ALL MUST STAND BEFORE GOD AND BE ACCOUNTED FOR STOP THE MICK VICK BASHING AND PRAY GOD WILL HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL AND INTERVENE SO THERE IS NO PRISON TIME. ANN

  • Ella says:

Vick says he’s ‘immature’ and found ‘God’??? Did he hear a single word God said to him? Obviously not! He never mentioned once that he was sorry for what he was charged for brutally torturing and killing innocent dogs. He’s only sorry he got caught and now he’s lost money from endorsement deals. Vick is the scum you scrape out of the garbage bin and like so he should be thrown in jail for 6 years banned from owing any animal and pay restitution to fund animal shelters and education programs. Vick is not worthy of being a role model he is a total disgrace to the sporting profession and to the human race! What happened to the surviving dogs? PETA you must step up and insist that the surviving dogs be given a second chance so they can finally know what it feels like to be adopted into loving homes. Pitbulls are loyal for life they have so much love and compassion to give they deserve a second chance! This is about the dogs not the filth that Vick truly is.

PETA is just a talkingheadya’ll need to do something for the betterment of the animals instead of capitalizing on media opportunities. I.E. PETA seems to talk alot but what exactly has PETA done for animals in a real way. Yeah you bring notice to injustice but on a daily basis can you provide info on what animals you feed water rescue place in new homes etc….. PETA seems to be all about the media to me….. Yes Vick was was wrong but PETA needs to do more also.

  • Nigel Osborne says:

I find Michael Vick’s allocution disingenuous. All he is interested in is the slight chance he may play football again one day. You do not go from being a violent “ringmaster” of an abhorrent blood sport to an “aw shucks nice guy Christian”. There is something wrong with his brain that he lacks a conscience and empathy for the most vulnerable creatures on earth. Although he is not 100 sociopathic it is arguable that he is a sociopath to a varying degree. To make matters worse he now calls himself a “Christian.” Great! It is the dessert religions in the first place that cloaked humanity in the dark and malevolent concept of DOMINIONISM. But how can most people pretend to be outraged over Michael Vick’s conduct when most of us turn a blind eye to the daily horrors of factory farming and harvesting of animals for human consumption.

  • nate d says:

OK so let me get this straight. You guys mostly either want to seehim killedput in jailor donate all his money to build bunny conservation parks or whatever yo guys want. That is just dumb. Lets just think about how much cash the city of Atlanta is losing because he wont play this year. The jobs that HUMAN BEINGS will lose this year casue bunny lovers inc wants to keep Michael Vick from ever playing again. Kudos! So when do you guys start to help two legged animals?

  • kim says:

You people that think animals should have no rights are just as scummy as Vick and maybe the Feds should be looking at you.

  • Danie says:

After hearing Vick’s full speech of guilt I see only one thing missing! It’s all about ME ME and ME! He is not sorry at all for the torture and cruelty he personally inflicted on these innocent and defenseless dogs that he used to line his big fat pockets! He’s only sorry because 1 he got caught 2 two so called ‘friends’ are testifying against him 3 he’s lost money from endorsement contracts 4 he’ll have to pay back the $22 million signing bonus he got from the Falcons! Vick clearly shows he has no compassion for anyone or anything other than making more money! Funny how he and others like him always find ‘God’ when they’re caught! God would never tell you to inflict such torture on another being Vick did that out of pure greed!

  • Vick#1 says:

Listen if God did not want dogs to fight each other Why did he give them teeth? I have seen many dogs fight each other for no reason is it so wrong to make use of a senseless act that will occur anyway? Look into your heart and you can see what Vick did was not only right it was God’s will

  • Georgian says:

Yeah what Vick did was wrong but when did animals become more important than humans. Did we all forget the Mark Bell incident when he commited drunk driving and a hitandrun? He is still able to waltz back on the ice after that. I even read where Bell is going to be able to serve his sentence which is six months in the summer to avoid conflict with hockey season. What is that all about? He actually placed PEOPLE’S lives in danger and now this lily white boy basically has a chance to return to his life as though nothing ever happened.

  • Jo says:

I think Michael Vick needs to be chained up in the dirtiest of conditions not given any food water or anything else he needs to survive and toss him into a ring and FORCE HIM TO FIGHT and then if he PERFORMS poorly discard him as he did those helpless VOICELESS and very much DEFENSELESS dogs. Instead of participating in such cruel acts of violence the Wealthy whom have more money than the normal middle class people should do more for the animals Have fund raisers make donations and volunteer take a stand everyone needs to keep their eyes and ears open to this madness and dont be afraid to report ANYONE whom is mistreating any animals. Animals need us. Were their Voices. I think Mike Vick should serve as much time in jail for as long as he was involved in Dog Fighting which is what 6 years? and thereafter he should volunteer his time to cleaning shelters taking care of the animalsfeedings walks and whatever needs to be done as well as donate millions to animals shelters all across the country and give personal speeches to young influential youths that need to know abuse on any animal is wrong and there will be consequences to pay. A lot of animal abuse starts with todays children. Which is sad. How are these kids being brought up?

  • Judy Jenkins says:

I know that Vick said he found Jesus. When was he able to find Jesus and as most people seen to find Jesus when they are in trouble they seem to drop Jesus off at the next corner when things seem to cool down. The only Jesus Vick will be talking to is when he yells “OH JESUS” from the dark corner of the prison. HOPE HE ENJOYS IT AS MUCH AS HE DID DOG FIGHTING.

  • Mareyn Lewis says:

I think Michael Vick should serve the 2 to 5 years just like any other criminal. Pit Bull’s are beautiful creatures and deserve the right to live a comfortable life just like any other pet. When are we going to quit giving football players and all athletes a free pass to run amuck with all our law. Put his butt behind bars.

So if Vic didn’t gamble then he fought dogs for pure enjoyment. Tisk tisk tisk.

  • kim says:

This is to Amber Johnson I think that you are wrong about Peta they don’t care that much for animals since they want these poor dogs destroyed without giving them a chance at a normal life. GIVE THEM TO FRIENDS FOR LIFE As far as caring for animals more than people I don’t think that is the case with most people Its just that when people commit these crimes against animals its not long before they commit them against humans that are weeker then they are. I love animals and I think they should have more rights then the scum in jail for killing kids and taking others rights away. Animals just want to be treated with some sort of kindness. They are great companions and they love you uncoditionally. What Vick did will never be ok even if he were really sorry he will never change. He will always be a murderer in my book. This is for Peta you either want animals to live or die which is it. Stop playing GOD when he wants his creatures he will take them.

  • james says:

I FORGIVE YOU MIKE YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. DOGFIGHTING HAS BEEN GOING ON WAY BEFORE YOU GOT CAUGHT. MIKE HOLD YOUR HEAD UP BECAUSE YOU DID NOTHING WRONG WE ALL LEARN FOR MISTAKES AND YOUR MISTAKE WAS GETTING CAUGHT! YOU WILL REDEEM YOURSELF AND DON’T WORRY I’M WEARING ALL OF THE 7 JERSIES I HAVE “PROUDLY”! GOT MUCH LOVE FOR YA APOLOGY ACCEPTED.

  • Arthur says:

PETA Why is it that you guys look for a particular person to lash on to say he or she is cruel to animals.dogs in this caseWhat about the rodeothe why they handle bull ridingyou do know what they do to them. What about horse racingdo they not beat the horses with whips to MAKE them run. What about hunting wild animalsyou can just go out and kill a deer just to put its head on you’re wall to show you’re freinds. What he did was cruel but i dont think he deserves to do prison time for it.Prison’s are overcrowed as it is.That space is needed for hard core crimanls. Not for a person who’s never had a felony before.

  • marty jones says:

Michael Vick found Jesus? Good. Maybe he can find Osama Bin Laden.

  • Mike says:

It wasn’t not perfect but it’s a start I was actually oddly moved by his speech. I think Vick did show some remorse and I was really happy that he did not try to pull a “I’m going to clear my name” kind of routine. He owned it and apologized. It won’t save the dogs it won’t stop ESPN from profiting off of all of this it won’t do much of all still it was a start. And a much better start than the one I’d anticipated.
