Veteran Bob Barker: Stop Military Animal Abuse

Written by Michelle Kretzer | April 25, 2012

Navy veteran Bob Barker was appalled at what he saw in undercover video footage of U.S. Coast Guard trauma training leaked to PETA. In the video, live goats are stabbed, have their internal organs pulled out, and have their limbs cut off with tree trimmers. The goats moan loudly and kick while they are being mutilated, a sign that they were not sufficiently anesthetized, while an instructor cheerfully whistles and a soldier jokes about writing songs about mutilating the animals.

As a proud vet, Bob wants members of the armed forces to have the best possible training—and that means replacing archaic and cruel animal exercises  with superior lifelike human simulators that can bleed, breathe, have their bones broken, and even “die.” The simulators are already in use at many military facilities, and military regulations even require that non-animal methods be used when available. But the policy isn’t being enforced.

Bob wrote to then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano on PETA’s behalf to urge them to improve military trauma training by mandating that all programs use only advanced human simulators.

My own experience in the Navy left me with a strong belief that the brave Marines, sailors, Air Force members, and soldiers who risk their lives to protect our country deserve the best possible medical care, so this is not an issue that I approach lightly. It is clear from this video that dismembering and then trying to mend live goats in these crude procedures is worlds apart from treating an injured human on the battlefield. . . . I hope you will give this issue serious consideration and take steps to replace the armed forces’ use of animals for trauma training with 21st century simulation technology.

What You Can Do

Join Bob in asking Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security officials to comply with federal regulations and replace all use of animals with human simulators.

This has got to stop!!!! Why the fuck does the government get to spend OUR money torturing animals??? Inexcusable!

  • LaurieA says:

As much as I am revolted over any animal sacrifice in the name of war.. it would be helpful if PETA’s petition pages included feedback that others, outside of the USA, to forward their views. Protests are limited to the USA only.

  • PETA says:

Coast guardsman – Thank you for your comment. While you personally may have felt this animal lab was helpful, there is absolutely no need to trade even one goat’s life for a human’s life. Published studies have repeatedly shown that the skills needed to treat human victims of traumatic injuries are better taught using lifelike simulators (such as these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVEN10GfF30&feature=player_embedded & http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qmiTeGlM44s) that replicate human anatomy and physiology and not by cutting off goats’ legs with tree trimmers. The switch that PETA, Congress and others are urging the military to make is a win-win for troops and animals.

I have attended this training. I have used medical simulators and they are no substitute for this level of training. All animals were treated as humanly as possible with careful attention to their feel pain. We never joked and each animal was refered to as a patient. This is a sad but necessary sacrifice that has given me an incredible skillset that could save lives. Please understand this is done to protect our members. I would trade a million goats to save one childs life.

You people need to re-read this article. Its NOT all of the military. Its the Coast Guard ONLY. So don’t go putting down the rest of the branches. The Marines & Army use simulators. But I do agree that this is HORRIBLE. Why can’t they use the same training as the Army & Marines? Why do it on animals?

“Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives. We talk about America being such a great country and this is what we do.The world would be such a better place without the human race.We should be ashamed.

  • Jennifer Hofmann says:

The more and more I think of this the madder I get. To think our own goverment is allowing such brutal behavior. These poor goats. And our TAX DOLLARS GO TO THIS! THANK GOD FOR BOB BARKER AND PEOPLE WHO EXPOSE THESE SICK BASTARDS. I couldnt even watch the video. But thankyou to everyone who expose these hideous things.

  • Cindy says:

By taking part in this so called “practice” of ANIMAL ABUSE by our military, is another form of the MIND CONTROL that is also practiced.By subjecting military personel to such cruel treatment of innocent animals psychologically preps them for battle and partake in some “war crimes” that we now recognise.(my opinion)

  • Heldericht says:

How the FUCK is this happening in America? The media needs to pick this up and blow it out so it gets the attention it deserves instead of running stories about Romney’s picnic lunches.

  • Jennifer Hofmann says:

This is an outrage.Absolutley disgusting. We have to stop this. There is no reason poor animals deserve to suffer.

  • The Greatest says:

    This is awesome!

  • Shelia says:

Please for the love of God

  • Pascal Karitter says:

this is so unnecessary to practise on innocent animals..

  • Laura Boro says:

This is sick, inhuman! I am ashamed!! Use things not animals, what’s wrong with you people?

  • Tina Del Grande says:

We need to change things fast. This is inhumane and unnecessary! How can anyone do such torture to innocent animals, that feel, cry, breathe, and love. Our government needs to step in and stop all of this horrible torture of living things!!!

  • Bob Allen says:

Absolutely disgusting! It is hard to believe in this day and age, that such barbaric practices are carried out by a civilized country.

  • Stef Carroll says:

US military, I pray for your salvation. I am not God squad but you lot really need to explore hell; at least you will be warm.

  • Applehead says:

This is disgusting! How can these pukebags just stand around and laugh, like they feel nothing? These days, it’s like men have became more and more inhuman, like they are completely desensitized to animal, or even human, suffering! Trash, every one of them.

  • Lynn says:

I agree with Bob Barker. The above policies need to be enforced against cruelty to animals in the military, that human simulators should be used in training. Those who have gone through doing this torture should be treated like Micheal Vick, of the NFL.

  • Siraganda says:

This is the biggest shame I have ever heard of! I hate the american military for this crime and shall spread this horrible news all over the internet web! Criminal bastards – the world hates you for this!
