U.S. Senate Wants to End the Seal Slaughter

Written by PETA | May 11, 2009

The number of people who are willing to stand by as the Canadian government allows seals to be slaughtered each year by the hundreds of thousands is decreasing fast.

Recently, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed U.S. Senate Resolution 84, calling for an immediate end to the annual seal slaughter. This vote comes less than a week after the European Union voted to ban the sale of seal fur in its member countries.

The most powerful leaders in the world have voiced outrage about this barbaric tradition, and their cabinet members are in full agreement. Even Canada’s own senators have tried to introduce bills to end the slaughter.

WAKE UP, CANADA! The rest of the world is trying to open your eyes, and you’ve hit the snooze button too many times already.

I agree with you Peter; this is so shameful of Canada. But i’m afraid your statement of the people is wrong. I am Canadian and i hate that this is happening. I have written several letters to prime Minister Retard but he does not have Canadians best interest at heart. He is in this for big business and money. He is a little puppet when it comes to the US so i hope in this case that he listens to them and the rest of the world instead of his black heart. Its ironic that Stephen Harper shares the same name as the seals too. Unfortunately our prime minister is not in touch with nature and only in touch with oil and money.

The Canadian Prime minister Stephen Harper has just been elected. So, the Canadian people didn’t send him a very strong message, did they. This has been going on since I was a child and I am now 47. The fault here lies with the Canadian people, if they sent their government a strong enough message then this wouldn’t be happening. They just don’t feel ashamed enough about what is happening, it is just not important enough to them. This is happening in a democratic country. Do you think that this could happen in the UK, year on year, not a chance, the would be uproar. Canadian people feel ashamed, feel very very ashamed. If not of yourself, then of your country. You like to think that you are superior to Americans but while this continues you are so well beneath them.

Killing any animal is just plain cruel. If you’re guiltless enough to kill innocent, baby, (not to mention adorable) seals, then I doubt you feel for anything. If not for the seals, realize that what you’re doing is wrong for YOURSELF.

  • Betty Almand says:

This seal slaughter must stop. When man can kill an innocent being with such a cavaliar attitude then he is capable of killing humans and any other living thing. Kill an animal go to jail is my motto.

GOD BLESS! EVERYONE OF YOU WHO UNDERSTANDS THIS SEAL HUNT MUST STOP. PAUL MCCARTNEY AND OTHERS HAVE ADDED THERE VOICES TO YOURS. THE PEOPLE WHO DEFEND THESE HUNTS ALWAYS TELL YOU HOW UGLY THE SEALS ARE YET THEY KILL THEM FOR THERE FUR COAT. THEY TELL YOU THAT THEY HISS I GUESS IF SOMEONE KILLED YOU OR FRIEND YOU WOULD SIT SILENT. THEY CLAIM THEY NEED INCOME BUT THERE ARE MILLIONS OF WAYS TO MAKE MONEY EVEN IN CANADA SO I DON’T THINK THEIR ARGUMENT ADDS UP. I HAVE FOUGHT THIS SINCE I WAS A KID NOW I’M IN MY FIFTIES. WE CAN FINALLY CHANGE THIS WITH YOUR HELP YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE. WE FEEL THE SAME IT’S OUR TIME TO GIVE THESE SEALS A VOICE. THE FISHING INDUSTRY HAS ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO LOSS OF FISH AND COUNTRIES LIKE JAPAN KNOW WHAT I MEAN. STAY IN THE FIGHT AND CHANGE THE LAWS.

This is wonderful news since I have been protesting this since I was 11 and I am going to turn 50 soon!! I would like to comment to Titus and Jack however. First of all people who are concerned about other life generally care very deeply about ALL life and the Earth we live on and need for our survival NOT just seals! That is only a part of being compassionate humble and caring and is what God commanded us to do “Be GOOD Stewards” of what HE created! NOT destroyers! It was NOT until Man sinned against God that death violence murder etc. entered this world! Before that Man ate of the furit of the trees and the seed of the earth and so did animals!! Look it up in Genesis. There is NO mention of eating animals for food until sin comes into the world! God created animals to be companions to man then he created woman! Anyway the fisherman who slaughter these seals only make maybe 5 percent of thier income from the massacre and YES it IS a massacre! Wow! Can’t the fisherman think of anything better more honorable to do to make money??? How about Eco tourism???? Tourism makes millions for many states in this country as well as everywhere! Eco tourism would benefit thousands more people in Canada than the seal hunt ever would let’s look at the BIG picture here! Also Man is the one that upsets the balance and hramony of Nature every time! It is due to overfishing and the warming of the oceans that these and other species are in jeopardy. Heard of epoxia??? It’s a deadly chemical that reacts to the warming of the oceans and is disrupting and destroying the fragile food chain in these and other waters! People who care look at MANY differnt aspects of an issue they study it from different sources and viewpoints! These fishermen would do much better with catch shares and turning to Eco tourism. I believe the more violent we are towards Nature the more violent nature will be back! HEY! There hasn’t been enough evidence of this already!!???

I understand the animal rights issue and the protection and advocacy of ethical animal treatment etc. I agree. What I don’t understand is why people are focusing on the seal hunt itself and not the issues that have CREATED it necessary to do some of these hunts. I know the CDN government is defending the hunts and have used the Inuit as a reason for its decision. And I see that it’s been stated that only 3 of the seal products are from inuit themselves the industry has been so tarnished that no one wants to buy any. That 3 are real people who don’t have any other way to make a living and that will feed children children that are living in overcrowded housing with poor chronic health conditions no access to a medical doctor and food. Did you know that the 40 of the INUIT are living in POVERTY. They are 11 times more likely to commit suicide Infant mortality is 4 times more likely for Inuit these are the real issues. Does people not consider these issues that are faced by humans? To solve this problem and to get the Inuit to listen you would need to go into their homes live their lives and find out what they need. They are only trying to live this capitalist society that has been forced upon them
