Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.

University Lab Kills Cats, Lies About It

Written by Michelle Kretzer | December 8, 2011

He was a pretty, healthy, brown tabby cat when his guardians took him to a Michigan animal shelter in the hope of finding him a new home. But a heartless shelter director, a shady animal dealer, and a university hell-bent on abusing animals in crude and painful medical training exercises took away his chance at a happy ending.

Knowing full well that he would end up in a lab, the staff at Gratiot County Animal Shelter turned the cat over to notorious Class B animal dealer R&R Research, which in turn sold him to the University of Michigan (U-M). There, he was given the ID number 8269 and tormented in Survival Flight training labs for nurses by having hard plastic tubes repeatedly shoved down his delicate windpipe. A few days later, when U-M was done abusing 8269, they killed him. Another cat who was subjected to this cruel intubation laboratory, 8312, had been obtained from someone who gave her away “free to a good home.” The cat was illegally acquired by R&R before being sold to U-M.

The stories of 8269 and the other cats killed by U-M were uncovered when PETA obtained records from Gratiot County and U-M. They reveal that U-M officials—including the director of the Survival Flight program—have shamelessly lied to the public by repeatedly stating in a newspaper opinion column, comments to the media, and official statements that the cats used in the archaic Survival Flight lab are always adopted out afterward.

While we were shocked to learn about U-M’s illicit relationship with one of the most despicable animal dealers in the country and to discover that U-M has been blatantly lying about the fate of the cats, it really shouldn’t have come as any surprise. U-M officials have been misleadingly claiming for a year that modern human-patient simulators can’t replace the cat laboratories, even though these simulators are already used in the place of animals to teach intubation to doctors and nurses in other courses at U-M.

You can help prevent more cats from being betrayed like 8269 by clicking here to e-mail U-M officials and demanding that they replace the use of cats in these labs with the superior human-patient simulators that the school already owns.

For many years Lucy and I rescued many feral cats left to the elements to survive using their wits. Regretfully, some of them left and we did not see them again. U of M abusing and killing cats, pigs and any other creatures deserve their funding and the people responsible for such crimes need jail time to learn from their crimes.

    shame on you !!!

When I read this I want to cry and pretrt much do. First at the sad story of the cat who had to be put up for adoption. Then I’m sad for the family that had to make that decision then thinking he would get a great home. Then for him to be given away to mad scientist, in my mind, shakes me to my core. I have had a breathing tube before and its painful, can you imagine being that small and trusting and being tortured? These poor animals deserve a voice!! They don’t deserve to be tested and abused on. And theh deserve names!! Not id numbers.

  • Jessica says:

This article is about the use of cats for intubation and their abuse/death, but when I go to the petition it says thanks for not using cats but please stop using pigs. Now, I’m against the use of any animall, but this article is about cats, not pigs. And the petition says they don’t use cats anymore? Confused….

I am a nursing student and I would quit school if I was told do such awful things! You people should be ashamed of your .a shelter is supposed to be a safe haven from the traumatic things animals have already encountered or from being dumped by irresponsible individuals who Get pets they decide they no longer want or cannot take care of. I don’t know how people who do these things can live with themselves. If I was told to do this I’d quit nursing school because I do have compassion its not just a job for me and with that compassion if go help the animals that are being treated this way.

  • Lorraine says:

An institution of higher learning should be teaching by example. Lying and being cruel to animals is not what I would want my child to be taught if I were sending my child there to develop life skills. Maybe a good house cleaning of those responsible is in order? They don’t deserve big healthy paychecks.

  • BLANCA TRENCHE says:

I can’t beleive people have no respect for God’s creation.

  • Awesumdove says:

If you want to research (on anything) please volunteer yourself and your body and see how fast you re-act to the pain & abuse. You should be treated just like you do the poor animals. Everyone is here on this earth for a reason; and I don’t mean abuse/research!

  • jkilburn says:

Until I read this, I had the utmost respect for U-M. From now on, do this procedure on your Professor (I am sure that he won’t mind), each other, or yourselves.

  • Laura Hudson says:

if their is alternatives to this use them not the cats!!!! They don’t deserve this and other people be aware what is going on!!! Don’t let this happen to your pet or someone else’s??? How can this go on dosen’t make no sense to me??

  • Kayla says:

I don’t understand this…what did those animals ever do to you? Punish the people who did something, not animals! I bet these animals are saying to themselves, Is this how life is supposed to be? It’s not what life is supposed to be…and we need to help them! To all animals, you are in my prayers, and I hope it won’t be too late for you!

  • Serena Vann says:

Here I thought the University was a fine institution till I read articles that you still do animal research! It should be called by it’s real name! Abusing animals!!!! With modern techniques, animals DO NOT NEED TO BE ABUSED AND KILLED!!!!They just want to live a long and healthy life, not be used in this way!!!!!SHAME ON ALL INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gabriela larrucea says:

how you use an a live animal to do that i can’t beleive people can do that mke me sick

  • Amanda says:

I don’t understand how anyone can say that this is for the better good. I have many doctor and nurse friends and have studied medicine myself, and I can tell you that if I was looking for an animal that had a similiar larynx as humans, I would definitely not be going to a cat shelter to find test subjects. You can say all you like about how people in the medical profession have to learn some way, and I would have to agree with you-if this was 1912. We know so much now, although I know we have much to learn. However, treating such advanced forms of life in this manner is nothing but cruel and barbaric. As I noticed a couple of others that have written in have done, I can’t help but wonder what kind of doctors and nurses these people will become, or just who and what it is that this medical program has already set free into the medical profession at large, all in the name of ‘the greater good’; although I feel quite sure that no one considered the greater good of the animals. Now this may just be me, but I would be horrified if I found out that the doctor and/or nurse I had come to see or begun to trust, had been a part of this sickening and repulsive testing program. I think it goes without saying that I would find myself a new doctor as soon as humanly possible. As far as I’m concerned, all of these people involved have found eachother for a reason: they deserve eachother.

THEY CAN PRATICE ON PRISONERS, MURDERS AND RAPIST..NOT ANIMALS.

  • lisa says:

The people that actually do this to the poor cats are sick. My prayers are with all the poor animals that are tortured and abused! God help us all for having to hear about abuse so often it just breaks my heart.

  • Chandra says:

May Karma come back to haunt you all for these harsh actions. Such a shame that a college that is supposed to teach good things.. is teaching bad. I’d like to you see you involuntarily get a pipe shoved down your windpipe and not be able to do anything about it. Think before you act next time, because obviously you can’t fix what you’ve already done here, even if you do feel remorse. Let it be known that I will not be attending this college in the course of my studies. It’s definitely ruled out.

Any civilian who owns a domestic animal, let one of them try to abuse an animal and see what happens!!! All the facilites and persons involved should have their licenses pulled and/or fired, fined and prosecuted to the fullest for the uncalled for/inhumane treatment, abuse/death of these animals/cats. Lets not forget all the lies, for how long??? How many animals lives have been taken, for what?? This is wrong on so many levels and I want it to stop!! I hope that the people responsible for all of this are prosecuted to the fullest and no more animals will have to undergo the cruel treatment the others, unfortunately, in the end, went through. Lets all pray that the laws will prevail and something will be done to stop this and all involved!!!

  • Akmtnchick says:

What can I do to help stop this madness? My heart breaks everytime I hear about an animal being abused. I don’t understand why anyone would hurt or torture a defenseless animal. Animals feel pain just like we do.

  • CAROL LINK says:

I feel that all this lab testing on all animals should be stopped because these Ignorant people are not doing anything but torturing these animals then when they are done TORTURING them they then MURDER them! ANIMALS DON’T DESERVE TO BE ABUSE OR USE AS TEST LAB ANIMALS FOR THEIR LAB RESEARCHES THIS EVIL IT IS BARBARIC & THE LAWS NEED TO BE CHANGED & ALL THESE LABS SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN NOW! AND NEVER REOPEN AGAIN! ANIMALS SHOULD BE CARED FOR & LOVED NOT ABUSED & BUTCHER! WHAT THEY DONE TO THIS POOR CAT MAKES ME WANT TO THROW UP! AND I PRAY THAT WHEN THESE EVIL PEOPLE CLOSE THEIR EYES THAT ALL THEY SEE AT NIGHT IS THE TORTURED ANIMALS BEFORE THEY EYES EVERY NIGHT OF THEIR LIVES THEY SHOULD BE TORTURED LIKE THEY TORTURE THESE POOR ANIMALS SHOW THESE IGNORANT PEOPLE HOW IT FEELS TO BE TORTURED!

  • PhyllisGee says:

Too much of this goes on in the name of science.

  • Kala says:

Testing should not be done on animals. They cannot tell you what hurts and what doesn’t. What works and what doesn’t. So if I had a choice I’d choose to perform the experiments on humans. WILLING humans. Not an animal that can’t say no or cry when the pain becomes unbearable.

  • chamillion52@gmail.com says:

Hey this is to don’t you understand, and their comment……God above knows we have enough criminals, and life time prisoners sitting in prison that we have to support that we don’t have to use innocent animals to do this testing on…… I mean what better specimen could you come up with ?????????????? Answer me that.

  • Jenny says:

In my opinion if they had to lie about using the cats for research, then they knew they were doing something unscrupulous.

  • Lisa Rizzo says:

    Karma.

  • prairiegal says:

@don’t you understand. What makes you think you are so superior to any other animal out there? You are only an animal. If medicine or any product is for use by humans, then it should be tested on humans. Why do we think we can subject animals to pain and suffering for our benefit?

  • Nikki N says:

Not only is this heart breaking and wrong but it is also known as bad science our human bodies and bodies of animals such as cats and dogs have no similarites in anatomy at all. i say practice on the murders and rapists in prison doing life sentences, I am sure they would sign up for anything just to get out of their cell for the day…that’s just my opinion

  • Minerva says:

How can nurses and doctors do this to a living, innocent creature? I certainly would not want to go to them if I were sick.

  • Just ME says:

This cat like countless other gave it’s life for the betterment of mankind. How easy it was for the so called loving family to just drop off their cat ( problem) into the hands of a shelter. Now they claim that the abuse the cat underwent was so very horrible, well I think the cat was abused and it all started at he hands of it’s so called loving family. How did the poor cat feel being put in a cage and put in a car and brought to a so called Shelter .. No one it knew to hold and pet it.. no one to calm it’s fears at being in a strange place with strange people and even stranger sights, sounds and smells. Now the so called owners cry foul.. give me a break None of this could have happened if they had not dumped their problem at a sheltr.. so at least the poor thing was put out of it’s suffering.. suffering brougt on by being unlove, unwanted and uncared for. For shame on any one that dumps it pet at a shelter just becuse it is so easy for them..

  • Lorraine lvt says:

I never would have learned how to properly intubate a cat, dog, horse, cow, or bird unless I had live subjects to practice on these animals were spoiled rotten myself adopting a cat and a dog I got attached to upon graduation how is a vet tech supposed to learn without practical experience under supervision of a professor as for nursing students I don’t know much about that but I take better care of beloved pets because of my education the shelter should be repremanded for their actions that was illegal

  • Lisa from the Bronx says:

@ Don’t You Understand…Don’t YOU understand? These were domesticated housepets that were supposed to be relocated to new homes, not lab animals-and the owners were blatantly lied to. Where is your compassion?!

  • Nazy says:

Hey @dontyouunderstand, you speciesest ignoramus, I can’t have kids, my cats are my children, and I don’t see any need to perform this kind of cruelty on humans OR cats. There are plenty of non-living alternatives to live animal testing, either UoM or industry (i.e. humans) are just too cheap and nasty to provide researchers and Schools with enough money to use such alternatives. As someone who works at a University, I’m disgusted.

  • Rain says:

May no mercy ever be shown on any soul who would dare even consider doing such a thing. Let what is done to these lovely creatures be delivered onto the savage souls in every parting and rebirth.

  • sandra lenart says:

Put a stop to this practice and have them spend the money on a simulator dummie, they are being used more and more by everyone.

  • Ted says:

They already do practice on people without our consent. My paramedic friend said they Have student paramedics and drs come into the OR soon after a patient has been put under anesthesia and have them learn intubation under a dr. Supervision. this beautiful cat should have never been subjected to this.

  • Nikki says:

    Practice on criminals instead. Win-win.

  • Roxana Cruz says:

We humans do not have the same bodies as animals so the lame excuse of experimenting and toturing animals for the benefit of human kind is BS. Why don’t they just come out and say that they don’t think that animals have feelings or a right to live and not be hypocrites hiding behind the poor excuse of “medical research” PLEASE.

  • lisajks says:

These people should all burn in hell!!!!Cats are living beings with feelings just like humans.

  • Janet says:

This is criminal activity (in my opinion)…and, I don’t understand how ANY “human being” could inflict such horrible pain and agony on any living creature…especially those that have no choice and are held prisoner. I am sick to my stomach. Shame on the University of Michigan…isn’t this considered to be a high-classed school where you can earn medical and law degrees??? Not to leave out many other degrees??? I am shocked and horrified…

  • Victoria Mchatton says:

U of M programs and their deceptive practices should be punished. Maybe a few million dollars to PETA wuold make them take notice. SHAMEFUL

  • i agree says:

dont animals deserve just as much to the freedom of life as humans were all animals i think people need to treat other animals with respect if you wana do reserch like that test it on volunteers not animals leave them to loveing homes or to be free and enjoy life the way they were intended to. and if anyones interested i run a support group page called FIGHT ANIMAL CRUELTY that many people like you are able to talk to others and agree that cruelty to animals needs to end.
