U.K.’s Oldest Circus Goes Animal-Free!

Written by PETA | October 22, 2010

The U.K.’s Chipperfield’s Circus—which has been exploiting animals since 1684(!) and was in the news following the beating of a baby chimpanzee some years back—has gone animal-free!

Between 1996 and 1998, a long-term investigation of the circus led to successful cruelty-to-animals convictions of the circus’s owners, Mary and Roger Chipperfield; jail for the elephant handler; and the closure of three of the circuses owned by the Chipperfield family.

With your help, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus could join the list of circuses in the U.S. that have decided to do away with animal acts, but unfortunately, it has dug in its heels. Please watch our Ringling investigation, share it with your friends, and then contact our Action Team to start campaigning today to make it happen!

It’s accurate that there are still several members of the Chipperfield family involved with performing animals. But that does not diminish the precedent set by the Chipperfield name—which has been linked to animal acts for three centuries—to now be known as the “All Human Circus”.

What Frank is saying is true this man may have closed his circus doors to animals but everything I read on him shows that he works with The Ringling Bros. So its like this is a distraction to keep PETA & everyone off The Ringling Bros backs. Also who ever authorized The Ringling Bros to have an elephant sanctuary–this is very very bad. That the devil now has a playing feild for his evilness.

This investigation was from Animal Defenders International, http://www.ad-international.org/adi_world/.

How is it, that a PETA member was undercover for 6 months and was only able to get, what, 4 minutes of footage? Is that the only evidence PETA was able to obtain after 6 months undercover?

If what Frank C Bostock is saying is correct, Chipperfiels are now exploiting tigers in a Circus Medrano in France. There is no victory if the cuelty continues elsewhere in the world!

  • CharlieCharles says:

OMFG poor elephants Im really glad that we’re winning this fight to stop animal abuse!!

  • Frank C Bostock says:

You are all being taken for a ride. There are no Chipperfields on this circus. Mr Chipperfield is currently training tigers at Circus Medrano in France. This is a cruel marketing ploy by a Mr Hopkins to try to get animal lovers to support his all-human circus! You are being conned and shown the finger at the same time!

  • keith says:

Correct me please if I am wrong ! but I do believe Chipperfield Enterprises are still training and do supply animals for circus performances worldwide..

  • Penelope Ryan says:

This is good news, yes we have to keep fighting!!!

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

The American public needs to be indoctrinated against the exploitation of animals.  Last night I viewed a documentary entitled “Jesus Camp” where children as young as 5 are trained to become soldiers for God.  The pastor stated that animal rights activists should do what she does to be successful.  In order for people to be taught to fight for anything, the lessons need to be taught from the time children are 5 years old.   If you do not want your children to exploit animals, do not take them to zoos, circuses, or any place that exploits animals…and never stop teaching them about the rights of animals to exsist in a cruelty free world!!

  • Irene Leggett says:

I know I shouldn’t think this as the animals would ultimately suffer more, but after watching this video, I actually wanted the elephants to retaliate as just one blow from the elephant would probably be enough!! I certainly wouldn’t blame the elephants for it!!!
