Three Arrested in D.C. Seal Slaughter Protest

Written by PETA | September 16, 2009

This morning, when Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with President Obama at the Canadian Embassy in D.C., he got a welcome that I’m sure he won’t forget any time soon.

Three “seals” covered with red paint writhed on the ground to illustrate what happens to hundreds of thousands of harp seals in Canada.
Seals
Fifteen other demonstrators held up stop signs reading, “Harper: Stop the Seal Slaughter.”
Seals
With D.C. traffic already backed up, the cops weren’t thrilled with the additional congestion.

Luckily, the officers weren’t armed with hakapiks.

If Prime Minister Harper wants a warmer welcome next time, the first thing that he should do is stop the annual seal slaughter.

Wow those are some brave brave furries.

  • Edward says:

I think that you need to read the First Amendments before blindly saying that they were arrested for protesting. They are given the right to free speech freedom to assemble freedom to petition and freedom of the press. They would not have been arrested if they were rolling on the grass and not in traffic.

  • emma says:

i agree with bluebell how is it legal to club seals but illegal to protest against the cruelty it just shows how blind some people really are!!!!!!

  • sheila says:

BRAVO!! this slaughter is shameful Mr. Harper end it if you don’t like the way the world views you. this is great coverage it was peaceful enough the protesters hurt no one the seals are tortured to death in this killing so if the protest gets a little ugly good for those brave ones!

  • Jade says:

For those wondering the seals were not arrested for their protesting they were arrested for blocking traffic. You’ll probably say “well it’s their right to protest” yes… but you have the right to “peacefully protest” which means you can’t cause a roadblock. Plus seriously is this worth the lives of yourselves causing pain for your family and friends for seals who you may never get to meet? If it is then I sincerely pray for you and the nation because you are being selfish. BTW I don’t condone the seal hunt as I hate animals being killed just for their fur or headantlers. That said I don’t think someone should be risking their own lives for it as well as those in a car. Seriously this time you got VERY Lucky given D.C.’s traffic that no one died.

  • Barbara says:

Good job! We should all be backing these protesters! I hope none of them were hurt. The law can be pretty rough sometimes in taking people away. Keep up the good work!

  • Kerri Krusinski says:

    Way to go Seals!!!!!!

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

I think the protestors were arrested for blocking traffic rather than protesting the seal slaughter however I know from experience that blocking traffic is sometimes the only way to get the attention of the public. I once participated in a protest for a group called “Worthy Wage” which is dedicated to trying to get better wages for daycare workers and teachers. We got attention and news coverage by completely blocking the main throughfare into our city on a busy weekday morning. Nobody went to jail but we all got cited I think the police were afraid we’d riot which we had no intention of doing…our group believed in passive resistance. We got television news coverage and that was the main thing.

  • Bridget Curran says:

Well done! Fantastic costumes although you might want to put some grey on there to signify a moulting pup. You know how those tiresome prosealing people like to point out that whitecoats aren’t killed anymore while ignoring the fact that those very whitecoats die the moment they lose their first white hair. Well done and thanks for what you’re doing!

  • Maureen says:

This really got the message out great protest!

  • suzana Megles says:

I don’t approve of all the PETA moves to attract attention but this one got my thumbs up approval. Hope Harper got the message!

  • Claudia Delemont says:

You go Peta !!!! Thanks for standing up for these and all the other precious aninmals

  • Saucy says:

    Oh Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD ONE!

  • AAG says:

    I agree Brien!

  • John Carmody says:

    well done this looks great!

  • myrna says:

I don’t understand what is so wrong about it? Is Canada so concerened about what they truely do to these poor animals? The Prime Minister should be a bit more sympathetic and understand that no one approves of such cruelty! Yet the Prime Minister sleeps at night with no worries whatsoever…STOP THE SEAL SLAUGHTER!!!

  • Lala says:

thats awesome! their making a brave stand! i would sooo do that!

  • sara says:

I think it was a good idea to do this because people need to know that this is going on and that it needs to stop. Animals make up our ecosystem there here for a reason. There not here to be clubbed hunted skinned slaughtered etc.

  • Nicolle Lundeen says:

i’m so jealous! i wish i could have been there!

  • cc says:

THIS IS TRULY AaaammMAZING!!!! YAY TO GO GIRLSPETA!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

  • Bluebell says:

Hardly fair is it? You can legally club a seal pup to death for the sake of fashion and yet you end up being arrested for speaking out against the horrific cruelty those seals endure.

  • Brien Comerford says:

Accolades for activists who peacefully protest against the seal hunt slaughterhouses animal vivisection fur hunting trapping bullfighting dogfighting cockfighting and abortion.

  • Sarah says:

Wow!! This is fantastic!! Thank you for speaking out for the seals!!!

  • Shari says:

I LOVE PETA! They need to arrest those mean club swinging killing seal hunters!

  • sanjuro says:

You should have hired a fourth guy made him wear a Canadaflag shirt and have him beat the seals with a plastic club. At any rate well done Peta!

  • Robert Donat says:

    Good work little seals!

  • Shari says:

Oh my gosh!! What great pictures! I hope they didn’t arrest these poor little seal protesters! THEY DID A GREAT JOB!I am so proud of them!
