Switzerland’s Cat-Fur Trade

Written by PETA | June 2, 2008

You might be surprised to learn about Switzerland’s involvement in the cat-fur industry. Switzerland is the only country in Western Europe that still legally allows cats to be hunted for their fur. Swiss law even states that cats that wander 200 yards or more away from their homes can legally be killed—and their fur can be made into jackets, coats, and bed blankets.

It’s really no coincidence that most people don’t know about Switzerland’s cat-fur trade. If you were to step inside a fur store in Switzerland and raise questions about cat fur, chances are the store would deny any involvement or pretend it does not know anything about the industry.

But undercover investigations conducted by television crews last year exposed Switzerland’s cat-fur trade. And caught on film were the same tanners and furriers who, when questioned, denied any involvement. You can read the details here.

The footage caught on film from hidden cameras caused an uproar from Swiss citizens and animal rights groups. Longtime animal rights advocate Brigitte Bardot has thrown her support to the cause, and SOS Chats—Switzerland’s pro-cat lobby—is now working to ban the cat-fur trade and cat hunting.

Ironically enough, Switzerland actually banned all cat-fur imports from other countries in 2006 because of concerns about the animals’ treatment during slaughter—a move that is proving to be as useless as the cat- and dog-fur ban that the European Union will be adopting later this year.

It’s a little hard to be neutral when you’re contributing to this, Switzerland. Don’t you think?

THESE PEOPLE ARE SICK A TWISTED. THEY HAVE NO HEART. THEY WILL GO TO HELL. HOW CAN YOU SEE AN ADORABLE ANIMAL AND DO SUCH A THING LIKE THAT. GOD WILL PUNISH THEM! THEY WILL GET WHAT’S COMING TO THEM. THEY CANNOT HURT OUR FRIENDS LIKE THAT. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE CRAMMED IN A BOX W 30 OTHER PEOPLE TRANSPORTED WOUT FOOD OR WATER HUNG FROM A WIRE NOOSE BY YOUR NECK GOTTEN YOUR SKIN RIPPED OFF. IMAGINE BEING ALIVE FOR THAN. AND EVEN SLICING YOUR FINGER ON ACCIDENT WHILE COOKING HURTS BAD. IMAGINE YOUR WHOLE BODY.

Killing cats especially domestic cats is atrocious. Not denying that. But killing any animal especially for fur is atrocious so I don’t understand the outrage. PETA is supposed to champion all animals equally so why are cats different just because they’re commonly pets? Are they more alive than foxes etc? Many of the comments here seem so pedantic and seem to be following the “animals who are cute and cuddly are more important than other animals” mindset. Regardless it should be pointed out that aside from this Switzerland in general has far better animal rights laws than most countries including the United States where PETA is based. So it seems ridiculous to degrade the entire country for such a thing when you’ve failed miserably partially as the result of hypocritical tactics in solving even greater problems in the US. Also the ban is apparently against the suspect treatment of cats being slaughtered not their fur itself. So consequentially it makes sense they’d only allow it from within their own country. I should also point out that Switzerland isn’t part of the EU. I certainly oppose the killing of cats and any other animal and think this is awful and a huge blight on the Swiss government. But I also think it needs to be kept in perspective if only so others can take it seriously. I mean if you really wanna be outraged take a look at some of the laws in neighboring France.

omg! that is soooo mean i am sooo sad i own a cat and if she got skinned alive i would probably kill myself becuz there wouldnt be anything else worth living for cuz i would miss her soo much and probably would die of depression anyways u people need to be nice to animals

  • Natil says:

OMG. at school im made fun of for being the cat person now theres another reason i should talk about cats. more at school people tell me that cats should all die. now im going to say move to switzerland and wear cats and f OFF and go to hell. all the time i tell my cats dogs and hamsters if anyone hurts them i will kick their a. im never ever going to switerland. i could never go to a place that would wear snoopy and harley. and i never would go to china or japan because i could never go to a place that would eat peaches and pugsley. and im sickened for even living in the USA because i love animal i dont eat them and i dont wear them im sickened because this country kills so many animals with no thought of what they go through. im happy that this was the last year i was at a school i was at because there was a mink farm right next to it. i hated going there every day. people should think of what the animal goes through. either the pain of being skinned or having their necks cut and eaten or being put into a pressure cooker as they do in karea to cats then they drink them. people complain how much their life suck but they should think of what animals go through being in little cages not being able to turn around and taken from their families. so how would they like to be them RESPECT ALL ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • r says:

It really has to come to an end this “need” to wear fur at the cost of animals dying. i TRY TO REMIND MYSELF WE ARE LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY AND THEN THIS STORY REMINDS ME WELL MAYBE NOT ALL OF US YET

  • jennifer says:

i live in switzerland and really do not understand how they are allowing this! animals are treated so well here dogs are allowed everywhere stores restaurants etc. if you want to buy a bird rabbit or any kind of rodent you are not allowed to buy only 1 because this is considered cruel. switzerland really looks out for the well being of its animals therefore cat hunting for fur makes absolutely no sense! i have heard cat fur being sold in remote areas around the ‘jura’ area so it is happening! most swiss don’t even know about it. they point their fingers at the chinese eating dog meat yet the equivalent is happening in their own country. this definitely needs attention!

  • lynda downie says:

You’d think that people would be freaked out at the thought of wearing cat skinno matter how bad their rheumatism is! Lord it’s no wonder the cries of the other poor animals fall on deaf ears if some people don’t mind snuggling up with dead Fluffy!

  • Julia says:

PS WOW ANIMALFRIEND… Oh lol sorry bout the caps thats sad i would have been crying if I saw that and im sure you were. not all swiss people are bad!

  • Julia says:

This is wrong absolutely WRONG! And just today for a writing assignment I got assigned a topic on why hunting for fur is right or wrong. I’m obviously debating on wrong but almost 70 of my class thinks it’s okay! This is sick people! SICK!

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

I can’t believe that this is the same country that fought so hard to bring an end to Kosher killing in 2000. Also this country said that they have very few meat eaters. Now they kill Kitty’s for their fur and sell horsemeat. We will never go back to this country. Bastards. Peace for all animals!

  • Jordan says:

This is definitely surprising and extremely disgusting. I never knew much about Switzerland but obviously its government has major issues and furthermore who slaughters cats? Who wears cat skins? Cats are companion animals just like dogs or hamsters or other animals. In my opinion NO animals should be killed for their fur in any part of the world. That’s what cotton is for you can buy or make clothes not made of dead cats. It really sickens me how barbaric people can be sometimes.

  • animalfriend says:

as a swiss i just can tell you that i emigrated already years ago to france because switzerland is an el dorado for vivisectors and other lowriders such as governmental cheaters during the franz weber initiative for abolition of vivisection in 1985! the man who counted the votes inside zurich train station was the killer of konrad ackert’s vivisectioned animals in his torture chambers where i saw him undercover with my own precious eyes! and also shame on moritz leuenberger who frequented hare krishna tempels and proclaimed himself a vegetarian before his election for state president and afterwards he was coward enough to fall into a complete silence when the chinese slaughtering of staint bernard dogs became public and the strong word of a swiss authority would have been necessary i spit on this country and it’s heads of state in eternity and if and whenever the extraterrestrians should invade that country i would betray it for 1 rappen yeah!!!

  • karla says:

thats sick! whats wrong with people! i just dont understand! cats and dogs are sweet animals theyre pets! NOT clothing! thats gross

  • roxanne says:

Yes I was so surprised to find alot of the people in Geneva to be cold and distant. Now I do understand this country lacks kindness. Perhaps the lack of compassion and kindness contributes to Switzerland’s high rate of suicide.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

I think a lot of Swiss oppose this. It’s up to those good people now to take down for good the Swiss fur industryall fur. And instead of a cat fur blanket to alleviate the pain of rheumatism apparently a vegetarian diet will do that and much more for you.

  • Ana says:

Switzerland has become another 3rd world barbaric nation when it comes to the other animals. Switzerland and China now trade secrets on how to inflict even more pain as they slaughter the cats for their fur trade. Disgusting barbaric violent cruel and totally unnecessary. Cats are beautiful creatures and should be able to live in peace. Wear your own skin!!!!

  • kelly says:

The Swiss government is a disgrace and an embarrassment Maybe all that hiding of money for criminals all over the world went to their heads

  • Carla says:

How very sad. Another corrupt government. How they twist everything to make themselves look good. Those retailers are probably given a tax break to keep quiet! Shame I thought the Swiss were better then that!

  • melissa says:

Man these people got balls. Cause if i ever see it happending i will kick thire ass! Cat are to be hugedhave their tummes rubbed and be peted loved and be cooed over not to be made in to colthing and blankets!
