Swine Flu Victim’s Family Sues Pig Farm

Ah, the plot thickens. Smithfield—the same folks who sent a memo to employees a couple of weeks ago claiming that the swine flu outbreak isn’t connected to pigs—has been sued by the family of Judy Trunnell, the first U.S. resident to die of the disease.

In that same “spin in haste, repent at leisure” memo, Smithfield claimed that “there is no evidence that any of the people affected had contact with pigs.” But, as we reported last month, several news reports indicate that La Gloria—a Mexican village near the enormous Smithfield-owned Granjas Carroll factory pig farm—is home to the first confirmed case of swine flu and may have been ground zero for the outbreak. Apparently, the family of Judy Trunnell—who was a pregnant special education teacher in San Antonio, Texas—has seen those reports too.

To get an idea of just how foul and disgusting Smithfield’s Granjas Carroll factory farm is, check out these photos, which were reportedly taken there.

Right now, we still don’t know for sure where the swine flu outbreak originated or how it spread. Hopefully, this lawsuit will shed some light on that.

I think we need to stay openminded. Using the words like “almost” is not good enough. I’m not sure where you are getting PROOF that this new combostrain can’t be transmitted from pig to human. I haven’t seen that proof and even if I did I would still QUESTION that data. Perhaps this family is suing in order to bring attention to what horrible situation they must be going through right now….because of a virus that NO ONE hardly knows enough about yet it’s too new!! So let’s not be quick to judge and jump on any bandwagons yes some of which that want to protect the pork industry there’s big money in that folks. Are factory farms to blame? We should be asking questions and demanding answers. Not quick to judge a family that is suing because a family member DIED from a flu that is certainly being downplayed.

  • Saucy says:

Kara Kevin and Mel Dumb Da Dumb dum You will believe anything out of the fat grotesue mouths of the slimy pork industry. I bet you believe that eating a pork chop is not direct contact with a pig. Fools Fools Fools. There will be justice for pigs. It’s called the WRATH OF GOD. Bravee to the family for suing these heartless bastards. I hope you stop eating PORK.

  • Saucy says:

Isn’t funny how all the people pigs come out on the page when viewing photos of the darling little creatures being led off by the evil hand of swine eaters. GO GETTEM PIGGIES. SWINE FLU ON YOUR PLATE HAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • Chris says:

Jaquie ‘All factory pig farmersworkers should be shot.’ You say this right after you are so horrified by YouTube footage of pigs being slaughtered. How about footage of the people being slaughtered. Would that satisfy you? You claim to feel so much for the slaughter of these pigs and then in the same breath advocate the slaughter of people instead. Are you that delusional? Do you really feel more for a farm raised piece of meat than a man trying to provide for his family?

  • mel says:

OK this is ludicrous. Why? 1. Scientists have proven that the swine flu stemmed from several strains of the flu from different animals including human. It’s not directly from pig farms. 2. You say the photos are reportedly from the farm. OK fine but do you realize that if they’re not in fact legitmately from the group you’re potentially committing libel and slander and you can get sued? Also no actual sources are sited therefore there is a question of legitimacy of your claims. 3. We get viruses all the time from animals no matter how they’re kept. It’s called mutations of viruses. Having them freerange doesn’t reduce the risk anymore than killing the whole lot does.

    Right on Tamra

  • Kevin says:

Before anyone starts complaining differently the “swine” flu is genetically connected to a flu that pigs have but that flu mutated with a human strain. This swine flu is only called that because of a connection with an actual flu within pigs. Pigs have nothing to do with people getting this version. It’s already been proven that you CAN NOT catch this swine flu from pigs even raw pig. This lawsuit will probably fail miserably especially since it has also been proven that anyone who did catch it was either in Mexico or came into contact with someone who came from Mexico. Nothing in the US had anything to do with the disease if anything the family should file a lawsuit against the DHS for failing to secure the borders to keep people with this disease out. Once again pigs have almost NOTHING to do with this “swine” flu except the strain is a mix of influenza that include a strain of flu that pigs can catch.

    Uh Gina… What?

  • brandie says:

I mean really the only reason people sue these days is to get MONEY!!! How is suing going to make her come back? Um it’s not. So dragging out some lawsuit will make the family feel better? I think not. It’s so stupid to sue a company unless you can prove that they are the cause for what has happened. They can’t prove it. As far as pig farms go do I really wanna see the pics? I can believe it with out seeing it. Animals are treated as if they don’t matter much. It’s just a sad world.

  • Gina says:

I agree with you Kara! People are always blaming animals for everything maybe they need to look in the mirror learn how to take a bath. Incase anyone has ever noticed human beings are filthier than animals. Animal’s can’t take showers and baths by themselves human’s can. There’s no excuse. Some people are just nasty! oh em gee i am so lik theenking sum peeple are sooo like sto0pid… lolz

  • Tamra says:

Kara First of all learn how to spell especially when you call other people “ignorant”. Second do your research. Swine flu is genetically linked to an influenza that has been seen in pigs. Ignorance is parroting sentiments and catch phrases without having data to back up your claims. It sounds like you blindly climbed aboard the bandwagon trying to save the precious pork industry. Nothing like trying to be a freethinker huh? Or should I just call you “NAIVE”?!

  • Jaquie says:

I feel like SCREAMING there is footage on you tube showing the gruesome slaughering of the pigs in Egypt. The sows and piglets are beating with iron bars and stabbed. What the hell is happening in this world. All factory pig farmers workers should be shot it takes a lot for me to lose my temper scorpio moon by directing the blame at the pigs these low lifes who work with the pigs are using their aggression and violence by beating them. These airheads will never see that breeding the pigs in such disgusting conditions could cause swine flu. I know Peta you are trying to get the message out there but the pigs are suffering.

  • Kara says:

You are all nieve. There is NO EVIDENCE pigs are linked to the Swine Flu. It’s just a name that was misinterpreted by ignorant Americans.

  • Amanda Goodwin says:

Really sad this mother died… I hope this lawsuit goes well for them…
