Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.

We Spooked KFC–Now Scare Your Neighbors!

Written by PETA | October 31, 2008

Back in January, we told you about one of our cheekier stunts in our ongoing quest to help chickens who are raised and killed for KFC. Long story short: It involved the cemetery where KFC founder “Colonel” Sanders is buried and a headstone for PETA’s own Matt Prescott (who, don’t worry, is still among the living). The headstone is inscribed with a poem, the first letters of which spell out, “KFC TORTURES BIRDS.”

Now, granted, we might have a slightly, um, off-center sense of humor, but what we saw as cheeky, others thought of as, well, morbid. One commenter even accused us of having “desacrated [sic] an entire graveyard.” (Seriously? And people call us drama queens!)

Fortunately, a lot of other people “got it.” Unfortunately, among those who didn’t see the humor were the operators of the cemetery (and, just possibly, those chicken-pluckers at KFC). Suffice to say that we now find ourselves in possession of a homeless gravestone.

Cave Hill Cemetery forced us to remove Matt’s headstone after cemetery officials caught on to the hidden message it sent. As such a unique piece of activism history, we’d hate to see it collecting dust when it can be out there getting the message out about KFC’s real secret recipe. So now this piece of animal rights history can be yours just in time for Halloween, the creepiest holiday of the year—give or take Yom Kippur and Dia de Los Muertos. We’re offering you the chance to own something that will scare the bejeepers out of your local trick-or-treaters. So head on over to eBay and make a bid—not only can you own a piece of animal rights history, you can help PETA put an end to the cruelty of KFC and other animal abusers as well.

Ahem. KFC does NOT raise chickens. They purchase them. You are not after the right company. Do your homework before you start yelling. Go after Tyson or someone like that…

  • Beth says:

I don’t at all think this is going to far. It looks to be that point that the only way we are going to get through to the rest of the population is to go too far and use that shock factor to our and the animals advantage. We are never going to get anywhere unless we do everything we can and quit worrying about boundaries!!

  • david says:

Well Done PETA. Someone needs to stand against the obscentiy that is KFC. Anyone who is objecting to offending the dead and their relatives needs to wake up. Grave yards are full of corpses worm food who have no idea whats going on above ground and don’t get offended. Some ancients civilisations took the afterlife seriously mummies etc but us 21st century types are a little more enlightened

  • Bill Lorenz says:

I am amazed that an organization with so many people goes about their business so backwardly. While I do not eat at KFC attacking them will get you absolutely no where. What you need to do is lobby the state legislatures where chickens are farmed and get them to pass laws regarding how they are raised and processed. KFC does not have any power to control how this happens. Yes they are a big customer but if they refuse to buy from these suppliers someone else will purchase the chickens anyway. Boycotting a restaurant chain will yield no results.

  • Laura says:

Im a vegetarian and i think PETA has great ideas but what they have done here is going too far. if they want people to treat animals well shouldnt they set an example by treating their own species well? im against KFC too i havent eaten there in years but that doesnt mean that you have the right to personally attack people. saying that kfc tortures chickens is fine and all but try to have at least some moral standards please. would you appreciate it if a loved one died and someone who didnt like them decided to vandalise that graveyard as ‘revenge’? you may call your stunt an act for awareness but its really just some people trying to attack KFC.

  • Ben R says:

That is seriously so FUCKING AWESOME! I love it! This person seriously had some guts! Those poor chickens deserve to be spoken for and saved from this. I love it!!

  • spiderman says:

    it’s true i’m protesting 4 it

  • Lindsey says:

You need a place for homeless gravestone??? Sell it to raise money and awareness.

  • Alexis says:

For all of the people who think this was an insult or somehow disrespectful to the graveyard and the people buried in it how is this any different from a memorial to holocaust or 911 victims? Im sure none of you would think it was disrespectful if something like that was put in the graveyard. Well these chickens are no different from the victims in these tragedies tortured starved killed inhumanely all of which could be avoided. This isnt cheep advertising this is standing up for what is right and making people aware. If people would have done something about the holocaust earlier then most of it could have been avoided if someone would have told police about the terrorists plans then 911 could have been avoided. And if you think that the lives of chickens dont compare to the lives of humans what makes us better the fact that we have the ability to force these animals into situations that we would never want put in or the fact that we ignore the pain the situations inflict and do it anyways? Maybe some of you may not agree with vegetarianism but were not asking KFC to stop serving meat were asking them to stop torturing these helpless animals.

  • Daryl says:

Its a shame that this stunt was chosen for publicity. KFC and their suppliers’ treatment of chickens really is terrible and a stunt like this just cheapens the impact while PETA stands for the ethical treatment of animals they should extend that to the ethical treatment of people and their final resting places. Shame on you PETAI only hope you choose a smarter path for future publicity on this matter.

  • Heather says:

PETA this is an inventive stunt that while causing offence to others only proves to raise the point those offended to think about how cruelly the chickens are treated dipped in scalding hot water while still alive? Beaks cut off? Beaks aren’t like nails or even and I am not belittling the following atrocity tusks and horns. It’s like having your nails RIPPED out. Also I think you should take a little time to read the original information the headstone is not that of a dead person it is that of a PETA member. Who is still alive. Sigh H UK

  • Pat says:

Until you guys stop eating porkbeefturkey or any meat shut up. There was no since in this. Desecrating a burial site like this. Any animal is tortured before we eat it so get over it.

  • Jessica says:

You guys are the smartest people int the world! Darn the Kfc workers and graveyard staff. KFC should be torn down all over the world!!!!

  • Jenn says:

How is this vandalism they owned the gravestone. thats like saying you cant spray paint on your own house. The poem was beautiful and so was the idea.

  • Adam says:

Awesome!!! too bad it was taken out though . If I had any money I’d make a bid!

  • MegMeg says:

i actually think thats quite funny its not cheap or disrespectful in fact if i were burried there i would be proud that someone would care enough to use my grave site to reveal such crueltie

  • Kelly says:

You guys are SOOOO right!! That was a great prank to pull! KFC needs to be put down and take all of the evil people who started it with it. My goal is to live in a kentucky fried CRUELTY free world!!

  • Emmi says:

I love the secret message! I am a veggie and though don’t think that should be on a gravestone…. I still find it amusing.

  • The Dude says:

Eh. It is kind of disrespectful to the others in the graveyard. Not all of them were “Chicken pluckers” Its rather rude what do you think other families not involved with PETA think? Its not the best way to battle KFC. But that’s just totally my opinion man.

  • nick.1997 says:

bloody legends well done thanks allot flag what others say well done and keep it up hes ded who cairs animals are more important than humans they have no voice. keeep it up. to all the haters get over it you meen nothing go away

  • Lottie says:

LOL this Really did make me laugh and think about KFC. i’ve been veggie for pretty much all my life my mum was a veggie and so is my dad and they got me into the hole peta2 thing. You should really stop taking this as offence. What you should take to heart is what KFC chickens actually go though just so you can fatten up. tbf its just heartless if you know what KFC chickens are put though and you still eat them Go Veggie xoxo

  • veggiebaby101 says:

Yes it is sad KFC and others are merciless with their beings! But think on the bright side. Lots of religious people say that when one dies or is killed god couldnt stand being away from them anymore! God luvz chickens more than uss which I dont mind since I 3 chickens and at some instances even h8 the human race

  • R.I.P says:

Very amusing to see someone label a deceased creep what he deserves to be remembered for! There is no honor nor respect for someone unrightous I dont feel sorry and just like them that dont care about animals I dont care about them being dead either.

  • Vanessa says:

Although KFC is wrong in the way they treat their chickens what makes you think that doing that to a gravestone is gonna help? The workers that do those cruel actions obviously don’t care so they’re not going to care what you do to that gravestone. More protests should be about and set up petitions in petting farms and other animal places like they do with the seals and a big event should be held in each country not just for KFCruelty but for PETA where this issue can be shown a whole week should run each day for a different age. KFCruelty isn’t as well known as it should be.

  • Ricardo says:

peta would u be pissed if i made that poem into a song

  • Hope says:

    still disgusting and horrible

  • Jill says:

Joe REPeta not caring about people…no Peta just cares about ANIMALS equally to humans. People are animals. Animals are just like people. They think they feel they form relationships and families and are missed and mourned when they are murdered. They deserve the same respect humans do. I know that is absurd in this day and age to say that believe me I say it out loud and get evil eyes and hatred filled responses from Christians mostly while holding their PRO LIFE signs however it’s the truth. Have you ever taken care of an animal? Been him or hers long term guardian and taken the time to get to know him or her? If you have then you know the truth you are just not wanting to piss off all the other “not so human” humans. Enlighten yourself and rise above the crowd and tell and acknowledge the TRUTH. Good luck to you…

  • Tessy says:

good going peta! keep doing what your doing save those poor animals…they don’t deserve this.

  • David says:

If you think that a harmless headstone like this one is a disrespectful use of a cemetery then imagine how disrespectful the grotesque horrors of a slaughterhouse must be….

  • Katie says:

    haha NICEE!!!

  • Theresa Huskey says:

    Way to go PETA.

  • Kimberley says:

Yeah I think the phrase “desacrated sic an entire graveyard” is way over the top. And I don’t think it was a “cheap” publicity stunt hey headstones are expensive! Graveyards are just landfills with better press and landscaping made for the living not the dead. I’m more concerned with the living who are presently being or soon to be tortured. On the flipside it could be that the dear misguided Colonel wouldn’t approve of today’s KFC either. Also I wouldn’t want to further distress a grieving person who’s visiting their loved one’s gravesite. So I suppose the tombstone’s best removed.

  • Deborah says:

    …THAT is disgusting

  • Deborah says:

saving an animal from torturesuffering is NOT a “cheap promotional stunt”. Those who are targeted are the ones doint “promos for profit”!

  • Joe says:

I’m doing a research project on PETA and whether or not they cross their own ethical boundaries in what they do. It is certainly lucky that PETA doesn’t care about people because this would be crossing some boundaries.

  • Hayley says:

That is disgusting to do that! nhow would you like a KFC rules! gravestone on your grave.! it is disrespectful. I hope PeTA was fined for that revolting act of vandalism! There are other ways to advertise it surely you don’t need to stoop to levels THAT low to advetise the cruelty KFC inflicts on chickens?!

  • robyn says:

i think thats a great stunt u didkeep up the good work

  • Nacoale says:

I freaking love you guys and admire your creativity. I found it to be very creative and on point. I love you guys!!!!!!!

  • David says:

    Very Clever!

  • katie says:

its true! KFC do torture their chickens. !

  • Jill says:

The problem is that people don’t think of chicken as a valuable being. That is why they just don’t get it. Chickens should be able to live their lives as God and nature intended. The most odd thing to me is that the bible thumpers who are continually claiming they value the sanctity of life are the most disgusting murders of our country. I suspect you two ‘don’t get it’ because you don’t believe that each animal has the right to life too.

  • vegancoin says:

good idea too bad it was shot down over cheap and misplaced ideals ethically flawed values morally delinquent behavior and nonexistent notions of compassion and fairness. keep up the good work. “This headstone will remind visitors that KFC stands for cruelty and death. We’ll continue to pressure KFC executives to stop these grotesque abuses of billions of chickensno matter how long it takes.” Have a veggie Halloween.

  • hope says:

    Ugh that’s disgusting.

  • Robert says:

You can not put a protest message for birds inside a grave yard. That is disrespect to use a graveyard for a cheap promotional stunt.
