Spain’s Queen of Shimmy vs. Matadors

Written by PETA | June 24, 2010

It’s the eve of one of Mexico’s biggest bullfights. And earlier today, María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Gutiérrez de los Perales Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Hinojosa Rasten, better known as Charo, the bodacious ray of sunshine from Spain, led PETA’s anti-bullfight rally in Los Angeles. The lovely Latin music icon unveiled her new anti-bullfighting video for PETA and presented a simple, straightforward message: Don’t Go to the Gran Corrida!

Charo

As a young girl in Spain, Charo went to weekly bullfights with her father, so she understands the gruesome, bloody reality of the corrida, which she’s protested in her dance music video for España Cañi and her appearance on Dancing With the Stars.

Cuchi-cuchi“* convince tourists to steer clear of bullfights? No doubt, but Charo—and bulls—need your help too.

In ancient Greecethere was a similar spectacle using bulls but it wasn’t barbaric. The bull wasn’t killedhe was just allowed to run freely in the arena and a man tried to jump over him in some acrobatic manner.Of coursethat was sometimes fatal for the man but never for the bullsince the man was not allowed to use force or violence against him.

You go girl. PEOPLE EVOLVE. That is what you are here to do become better more compassionate humane beings. Repeating stupid and cruel mistakes from our ignorant past and calling them “tradition” keeps ignorance alive.

I’m from Madrid Spain and there are a lot of Spanish who hate bullfighting. We’re tired of being labelled all the same. Not all Spanish do bullfighting and not all Spanish dance flamenco! Please notice that. I hate both things! These two Spanish habits are usually united people who lokes one usually likes the other and most young people doesn’t like bullfighting nor flamenco. At least in Madrid and Barcelona.

Thanks to this great entertainer for standing up for the bulls!! And thank you for the some of the most wonderful Flamenco guitar music! When I was 12 I asked my dad for a guitar and lessons for Christmas when I was 12. When my dad asked if I wanted to become a folksinger I replied “No I want to play the style of music Charo plays!” I played classical and flamenco guitar from age 12 to about age 35. I am seriously considering taking it up again. Maybe Charo appearing on the site is the sign I should!
