South Korea Burying Pigs Alive

Written by PETA | January 10, 2011

It sounds too horrific to be true, but officials in South Korea are piling pigs on top of each other in trucks, dumping thousands of them into mass graves, and burying them alive.

This atrocity is intended to control an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, but there is an inexpensive vaccine for the disease that the South Korean government inexplicably refuses to use. As many as 34,000 pigs have been killed in a single day. If this cruel slaughter is allowed to continue, the number of pigs killed could reach more than 1 million.

Please urge South Korean authorities to stop this massacre immediately. Send a polite e-mail to the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the U.S., Han Duk-soo, telling him that you want the South Korean government to stop burying pigs alive and to use humane methods of controlling foot and mouth disease.

Dear Mr. Han Duk-soo, You are in a great position where you have the power to help make this world a better place. You will gain global respect if you would please put an end to burying innocent animals alive in your country. It is cruel & sadistic. I understand that there is a health problem, but this is not the way someone with heart & soul should treat another living being. These animals, have feelings just like us, they feel love, fear, pain, happiness, sadness, this isn’t right. Thank you.

THIS IS REPULSIVE. THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS SHOULD BE TRIED FOR WAR CRIMES. UTTERLY REPULSIVE AND BARBARIC. I WILL HAVE N-O-T-H-I-N-G TO DO WITH KOREA FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. THE U.S. IS AN “ALLY” OF THEIRS, BUT SHOULD BE NO MORE. THE WORLD NEEDS TO BAND TOGETHER AND INVADE THEM TO STOP THINGS LIKE THIS. WE SHOULD BEFRIEND NORTH KOREA TO INVADE THE SOUTH BECAUSE THEY CANNOT HANDLE THEMSELVES.

  • misun kim says:

as a korean/american, i’m disgusted by this. stop the cruelty!

  • Leanne George says:

How can this be happening I am in total shock that people can be this cruel – how can this be stopped? Who can we contact????

  • Patricia Brooks says:

Disgusting. you have brought shame to your country.

  • whatever says:

Look, I can agree this is sooo wrong, I’m not sure if I can eat meat for quite some time. I’ve noticed though, people are using stories such as this to reinforce their buried hatred of any foreign culture. I’m half korean and honestly, even my korean friends are simply horrified about this. There is no need to have this immature attitude thinking that all Koreans behave this way. It’s a primitive way of viewing diffences and existing in this world.

  • nicole says:

There is no excuse for animal cruelty like this. If you must eat animals treat them with respect and empathy right up until the moment of slaughter!. I still believe a vegetarian diet to be more healthy as well as humane

  • Denise LaChance says:

To call cruelty wrong is an appropriate judgment. It is not simply “harsh” to bury an animal alive. The fact that others engage in cruelty does not excuse it anywhere that it happens. Many if not most of us who are critical of this barbaric cruelty are vegans and don’t eat any meat at all. I have no doubt that the problem is serious but that does not warrant horrific cruelty. Ever.

  • CICI says:

Foot and Mouth disease is NO laughing matter, and keeping pigs as pets may be at first a good remedy, however the prevention of disease and spread is nothing to place Shame or blame on those who are trying to SAVE LIVES. Food, Shelter and the ability to care for yourself and your community is Logical.

  • Diya says:

Please stop doing to animals what you wouldn’t like others do to you! they are living beings, just like humans and human beings do NOT have the right to treat animals in this manner just because they cannot think for themselves!! BE HUMAN FOR ONCE!!

  • mononoke321 says:

The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot. ~Mark Twain, What Is Man, 1906 Pigs are known to be smarter than dogs. How can you live with this cruel inhuman barbaric methods of slaughter?

  • paula cutri says:

    How can thi be allowed???????????????

  • Holland VanDieren says:

Unbelievably cruel. Shame on South Korea. This deserves to be headlines everywhere until stopped.

  • eli says:

    Stop please! :-((((((((

I do not want my Tax Dollars and my Government Supporting any Country who Inflicts such Cruel and Inhumane Atrocities to another Human Being or an Innocent Animal who has no Voice or Choice. Especially when there are Humane ways to Exterminate them.

  • charlie Bravo says:

As an old Marine I know that South Korea can put on a civilized face. However only a few set that example there’s not one excuse for what they are doing when humane methods are available but what can one expect when South Korea is still eating Dogs

  • robin says:

People. I AM in Korea right now. The hoof and mouth disease (HMD) is a deadly serious problem here. The Koreans to include Korean farmers are NOT sadists or “pig murders”. The Koreans would have come up with a better way if they could have. Would it have “looked” better to PETA types if the Koreans had shot….or “gassed” 1.4 million pigs? How about inoculation? They tried that, problem got too big too fast and incubation times for the disease out-paced efforts to contain the spread. The Koreans are desperately trying to prevent a huge collapse in the agricultural sector of their economy (which is thriving for the most part) and… Are these measures harsh? Sure, no doubt. Unfortunately that’s the way it is sometimes in life. Is is harsh when in the US they gas unwanted puppies and kittens by the dumpster full? Yup. Is it harsh when in the US they kill “unwanted” wild horses out west? Sure is. It’s harsh when you clear cut a forest so people can have wood for houses. It’s harsh when fishing nets scoop up life by the ton…..so people can eat. Yes. And, as humans live life further separated from the harsh realities that support them they will continue to foster the “dream-like” state of mind in themselves that allows them to be so judgmental of others. DON’T JUDGE, LEST YOU BE JUDGED!!!!! anyone who is a meat-eater is guilty of supporting the misery and pain of animals. how dare you single out one group.

  • robin says:

to the one who said these things need to happen to them so they know how it feels. indeed! unless one is a vegetarian, they are major hypocrites. these animals suffer regardless. a few minutes by suffocating is nothing compared to the lifetime of suffering because of factory farming. so in fact, westerners who are the largest consumers of meat in the world should be the first ones to ‘learn’ how it feels, eh?? hmmm??? hypocrite much???

  • Lori Pittaway says:

These animals need an inexpensive vaccine. These animals don’t deserve to die this way. Would you want to die this way. This action should hold you accountable for a crime. This is truly a crime what you are doing to these innocent animals with no voice of their own to say STOP!

  • George says:

Such a shame! Almost the worst thing I can think of. The only thing worse is the thousands of abortions that happen every day. Support ALL of God’s creation.

  • JACK says:

STOP THIS MADNESS!!! ALL ANIMALS DESERVE SOME RESPECT AND KINDNESS.SOUTH KOREA WE ARE WACTHING . I WAS PLANING TO TRAVEL TO S KOREA THIS YEAR, NO MORE,MY PLANS DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU DO ABOUT THE ANIMALS.!!!!

  • Bernadette says:

Please stop hurting pigs like this, the awful suffering they would be experiences is terrifying. These creatures are intelligent and know what would be happening to them. Just imagine if it was done to you or I!!!!!! Please stop this breaks my heart beyond repair…….I would give my own life it would help these cruel acts!!!

  • Sebastienne Incorvaia says:

This is completly unacceptable !!! You & your family members should be burried alive to get a taste of what it’s like. You might be ahead with electronics but however you are still savages living in the dark ages.I am canceling all my business trips to your country. You,indeed, are the worst of all animals

  • Jane says:

God has given us these animals to treat with dignity, Ssdly again here is another example of mankinds destruction and lack of love even to helpless animals in a society fueled by greed.

  • lind says:

This is absolutely horrific and must be stopped.

  • Garwin says:

This is disgusting, i wouldn’t even bury an alive ant. People who are doing this are cold-blooded and they should be stopped RIGHT NOW

  • AP says:

I’m a Korean student in America, and I too believe that this is not the best way to go about things, but I would like to point out that this article is incorrect. South Korea HAS started using vaccines, albeit a little bit late, but it seems to have very little effect in controlling the outbreak.

  • Doris Cloud says:

What a cruel act! Please stop burying pigs alive.

  • Andrzej Basaj says:

Please stop it. How many more times will humans prove to themselves, how inhuman they are!?

  • Becky says:

How would you like it to be done to you?

  • Bonnie says:

This is how the Nazis treated Jews. I am boycotting all South Korean products for the rest of my life.

  • cynthiajune says:

How can people be this cruel? PLEASE STOP BURYING THESE PIGS ALIVE. This is vile and disgusting. We should respect all animals for sacrificing themselves for us. They need to experience what they’re doing so they can actually feel remorseful.

  • Bradley Savage says:

Pigs are God’s children, too! Please stop this brutality immediately!

  • Dawn says:

This is definately terrible but Pat… the most horrible? Have you seen what they do to the animals in the fur trade? These animals are alive while their skin is ripped off of them. I still have nightmares. It scares me to know people are capabable of committing such atrocities and I’m the one who can’t sleep at night.

  • Silvia says:

Mais respeito e amor pelos animais, esta gentinha cruel não têem respeito por ninguém, não têem coração, não têem caractér.

  • Sandra Val says:

How could you be so cruel, Karma will get you.

  • chibcha says:

    HELL NO !!!

  • Laura says:

Please stop this. Pigs are smart and social creatures quite similar to ourselves. Please make this easier on everyone and stop hurting these animals. Would you want to be buried alive?

  • Kasey says:

These poor pigs. I cannot imagine how horrifying a death this must be. They are really smart animals. There must be some other way. I would like to know how to make a contribution towards supplying the needed vaccines to save these innocent animals.

  • Amparo Oria says:

Foot and mouth disease….maybe the pig farms should have the pig areas cleaner. (?) – Many times the animals get sick because humans keep them in dirty and unsanitary conditions.

  • Debbie Bochert says:

This is one of the most disgusting stories I have ever read. No wonder there is an outbreak of foot and mouth disease by the looks of how the pigs are kept. These are intelligent and family oriented animals. Boycott anything from South Korea until they stop this.

  • Stef says:

I have seen the most horrific animal abuse cases over the years but this one is just unthinkable, inhuman and barbaric. How stupid must these people be, I wish someone would bury them alive!

  • Gabriela Zambrana says:

BASTA!!!! NO MÁS MALDAD EN CONTRA DE LOS ANIMALES!!!

  • Paige says:

Its their horrible living conditions because of their gov. not the pigs. Wretched.

  • Karen Sheaffer says:

Sick Demented People! They need to be tortured like they are doing to the helpless pigs!

  • Louie Gedo says:

What is being done to these innocent pigs is not only unconscionable, but completely avoidable. Shame on those who are responsible for this abominably cruel mass murder!

  • both sides says:

I certainly don’t agree with any cruel or inhumane treatment of animals, but this story sounds suspiciously inflamed? Is the vaccine truly readily available and inexpensive? Does the average struggling Korean farmer have the capacity and means to find and pay a vet, perhaps even a team of vets to deal with this issue? Os should we instead be pleading for increase funds and education for the average Korean farmers so that they may have more viable options available to them?

  • Callie says:

These are the same people (Koreans) who not only eat dogs, but believe the more the dog suffers before it dies, the better.

  • MissJessica says:

Please don’t do this to God’s creatures. They did not ask to have this disease. Give them dignity.
