South Korea Burying Pigs Alive

Written by PETA | March 4, 2011

We recently told you about South Korean officials who buried more than 1 million pigs alive in an ill-conceived effort to control foot-and-mouth disease. PETA has recently obtained video footage of the killings, which shows workers as they toss live pigs on top of one another in a mass grave. Pigs are pushed out of trucks and into trenches, covered with dirt, and left to suffocate. Air pockets form in the soil, allowing some pigs to breathe, meaning that some may languish for days, injured and surrounded by dead pigs, before they die.

PETA has contacted several offices but has so far received no response. We need your help to keep more animals from being buried alive. Please visit our action alert page in order to e-mail the South Korean embassy in the U.S. and ask officials there to pressure the South Korean government to stop these cruel live burials immediately and institute more humane ways of dealing with foot-and-mouth disease.

And to help pigs right here at home whose fates often aren’t much better, order a vegetarian/vegan starter kit today.

Koreans are the most cruel people on this planet I don’t think they are humans

  • dave says:

This is the fault of only some S. Korean people? I’ve heard reports of people hearing the pigs’ cries long into the night. Why didn’t anyone make a fuss? Patheticly weak. It was the witnesses duty to do something or they are just as guilty.

  • rich says:

    This is evil.

  • Mark says:

This is appalling. There are no words. The S. Korean government/anyone responsible is a CRIMINAL. NO way around it. I will have nothing to do with S. Korea for the remainder of my life. Goodbye and good riddance.

    • Bill W. says:

Thumbs up to you Mark! This in not what people died for during the Korean War. I would like to see my own nation install some kind of sanctions that would hurt the responsible persons in the wallet.

  • Guy says:

This is an absolutely appalling story. Personally, I will never buy a Korean product again – Samsung, Hyundai, LG, Daewoo etc – as long as I live. Only economic pressure changes anything.

  • Jaya says:

Answering the question: what to do with sick animals. They are sick bcz. too many animals too crowded in farms.easy to get diseases in filthy surroundings. there are humane ways to kill or cure the animal. Please stop this practice. Be kind and caring.

  • enguyen says:

What really kills me about this video – is that those pigs were living in completely cramped environments almost all their life, and the moment they are taken outside, for what may seem like freedom compared to the cramped pens, it is only to their graves.

  • Nicole says:

I live in South Korea as an English teacher from America and they were getting reports that nearby residents were complaining because they could hear the pigs screaming as they were eating each other. And now the ground water is contaminated. It is horrible.

  • PETA says:

Jina, an inexpensive vaccine that could effectively stop the spread of this disease is currently available in South Korea. There are many more humane alternatives for dealing with infected animals, and we hope caring people everywhere will take action on their behalf.

  • England Tom says:

I am astounded. Words fail me. I just cannot believe sentient beings can be treated in this way by anyone. It’s just horrific and barbaric. How can the government of an industrialized nation like South Korea permit this inhumanity? It beggars belief.

  • Ewelina says:

How this way it is possible to do! Every time I can see as around for animals injustice is happening I am crying and I am thinking where is the God!

  • jina says:

This is horrible; but what other way would be possible to keep these pigs in lockdown from society? Think about it. They’d either be cramped in one huge room, rambling on top of each other, possible dying from stress. They can’t eat them, or they’d get sick. What then? They’d still die a slow death either way. We can’t stop it.

  • Niharika Mitra says:

    Please encourage humane behavior everywhere..

  • Lilly <3 says:

This is terrible. How dare they do these to these poor animals. Pigs are very intelligent and I’m sure they would be terrified, as would any human put in this situation. I can;t even watch this video it just makes me feel sick. How would these people like it if the pigs did this to them? I’m sure they would be charged with mass murder, but because they are ‘only pigs’ it apparently doesn’t matter. This is sick, the world is getting worse everyday, I wish I could save all these dear pigs. Shame on you Koreans. So selfish and selfless you are.

  • Amber Wilksaw says:

This is horrible, poor pigs!! *to those who are blaming the Koreans for being monsters eating cats and dogs…cow, sheep, pig, cat, dog are all the same to us PETA members. We aren’t blaming a nationality, we are trying to stop the killing and torturing of animals all together.

  • Leighann says:

Wowww… This is very horrific to watch! I never realised how bad things are in the world with animals until i recently visited PETA’s web site and saw the gruesome videos!! What is happening to the worlddd

  • David Knoll says:

What kind of insensitive brutes are South Koreans? Not worth the many lives lost in their defense. Tell your senators and congressmen no military assistance against North Korea. At least they are not burying alive innocent animals. Boycott all things S. Korean: KIA, Hyundai, Samsung and the rest. Cruelty beyond forgiveness. Bury a few of their corrupt leaders.

  • KOREAN MTFCKS!!! says:

I dont know what to say, I couldn’t even imagine this kind of horror could be possible. This is just beyond anything, hell is just a too lame word to describe this. Please, someone out there, please help those innocent souls and beings. :(

  • rachel says:

i am disgusted to be a member of the human race. there are demonic people among us who are willing to do these unthinkable acts. i cry tonite to God for these innocent animals.

  • MARIMA says:

  • Ana says:

Let’s just blame South Korea for this? Because some officials allowed this, all of South Korea must be evil? PETA, don’t blame the whole country, that’s not nice.

  • Nick says:

Truly a horrible solution, but what is the correct procedure for protecting ourselves from diseased animals?

  • Becky Yelding says:

Meat will always equal murder, whichever way you slice it – go vegan!

  • LyndaH says:

What makes humans come up with such a horrendous thing. Too lazy or ignorant to euthanize them the proper way. I have no sound on the video but could just imagine the distress and screams of these poor animals. Pigs are intelligent creatures. No living thing on this earth deserves this barbaric treatment. Too bad those that did this terrible thing can’t be prosecuted or buried alive themselves.

  • Linda says:

You can gauge a society by the way it treats the Innocents: animals, children and vulnerable adults. I can’t, offhand, think of one that isn’t abusive, disrespectful and downright sadistic. Sad state of affairs.

  • MP says:

Koreans are another bread of animals. They eat our best friends “DOGS”

  • y says:

korean eat dog and cat meat. korea is hell to animal

  • MAHI says:

  • joseph says:

they are very cruel..when our country has fmd diseases all of the pis has been euthanize and buried dead already unlike this one they buried them alive i think the pigs can really since that they are going to die like this one in hell….

  • Aurea says:

I am shocked. This is so gruesome, cruel, unbelievable. With so many compassionate ways at hand, life for these sub-humans is so cheap that they opte for the cruelest method they can. Sorry, but from now on I am hating Korean people!

  • Jenny says:

I am ashamed to be human. We are the most cruel and evil species on this planet. What can we do to stop this?

  • Kelly Hann says:

This saddens me so much, I can’t even begin to describe how awful it makes me feel. Please stop this barbaric practice and you will reap the benefits.

  • Yvonne Wickramasinghe says:

    THIS IS SOOOOO MEAN !!!

  • Robyn says:

How can people do this? How heartless do you have to be!!!! Humans are such a dissapointing race..

  • Teresa Echeverría says:

Are we really better than other SPECIES??? Thik about it…

  • Ji Park-Yamachika says:

The Korean government needs to stop this inhumane act immediately! There are drugs that can be purchased to euthanize the poor animals so that they will be put out of their misery instead of enduring such horrible fates. Feel so disheartened to see God’s creatures endure such suffering.

  • xochilili says:

Oh we are indeed already in Hell & this video and others like it, proves it. Our hell is here watching what slaughterers do to animals & not being able to do anything to stop it, right at this moment!Hell is knowing U belong to a species that can do this without a second thought! Only a band of Global warriors against animal abuse & ready to pounce can have a chance of stopping this. Somehow, all animal rights world wide must unite-I dont know how, but maybe we should all think on it. If we were all together, I reckon there would be a force to be reckoned with. We also need legislation that is recognised globally – something work to ward? I know I am totally fed up with animal abusers & want to be able to stop this sort of thing!

  • Isabella Ireland says:

It’s seems there is this innate sick brutality that needs to find its most defenseless victim. How deplorable! I’ll never go to that country again!

  • kay says:

I’ve seen so much shit that humans do, this does not surprise me, just one more thing that makes me hate my own species a little bit more

  • Jackie Sullivan says:

You people should be buried alive!!!!! Horrible, absolutley horrible!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tracey Cockerham says:

This behaviour undermines, and makes a mockery of, any attempt by this country to be taken seriously on the world stage. Civilised countries endeavour to take care of all their citizens, both human and animal.

  • A. says:

Only further proof that humans are the real pigs. :(
