Ad Backfires on Experimenters

Written by PETA | April 29, 2011

We’re betting that when that shameless front for the cruel animal experimentation industry, the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR), started putting up a series of misleading and offensive billboards, it wasn’t expecting them to get a makeover:

While daredevils have been giving FBR a piece of their minds, PETA has our own new – and more honest – ads which are going up in cities around the country.

I am so confused as to which items are really animal cruelty free. The more I read the more confusing it gets. One site will say a product is, then another says it isn’t. All the sites I bring up gives me different inforamation. One brand claims cruelty free but then the parent company isn’t. Then there’s the tricky way of wording it. I really want to go with cruelty free products, but it seems very difficult. Is there an acurate list out there with more available and more familar products? How can I be expected to try an online product I’ve never heard of.

  • animal researcher says:

the device implanted in the cat’s skull is just a probe to read either single neurons’ responses to certain stimuli, or the general response of the entire local region The brain cannot feel, so the animal is actually in no pain. They are anesthetized during the implant procedure, so again, they feel no pain. Unfortunately, since this animal has been irrevocably altered, it will be sacrificed at the end of the experiment. This is a reality of animal research – we are not allowed to let animals live if their physiology or chemistry has been significantly altered. Please, anyone, feel free to contact me with any questions as to why animal research is extremely beneficial to humankind, and as to why there are no other alternatives.

  • Elsira says:

i have a strong belief that the animal should live. Animals can stop breeding if we keep eating and mistreating them til death. but i dont see other humans eating humans therefore we can keep producing more humans which i have no care for. Animals are here for a reason, not to be eaten, not to be beaten, or mistreated in anyway even if its an ant. People who put up signs back to get back at the people posting them is sick minded. who in the world would think animal research is better? the messed up. please contact me if you agree with my thoughts or disagree. id like to hear your arguments.

Jackie, it’s not about mind control. If you want to “know your enemy” you should definitely try to read up on the subject of neuroscience. You will see that there are hundreds of things which could be being studied using this cat that are much more noble than “mind control”. The very notion that we’re anywhere near being capable of mind control at the current time is absurd.

  • Mary says:

I’d rather see the rat live. I hate kids and the majority grow up to be be corrupted members of society. Who says humans are more important? Humans suck

  • Jackie says:

Kaikat, that image of the cat is very disturbing. I believe, from some science programs I’ve seen, it has something to do with mind control. I’m not sure, but there was a show about mice having those things in their head, and being remotely controlled to go through mazes and things. If you wonder why I’m watching such horrible stuff, I believe in the idea that it’s best to know your enemy. So this way I have some info on what they’re actually doing, to make a informative statement about how wrong it is. I still think PETA should demonstrate at the children’s hospital they mentioned that tests on animals, and let the children at the hospital know what they’re doing. How are they going to explain themselves to thousands of crying children? The kids should know it’s not their fault, but that they can demand change.

PETA CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE WHAT EXPERIMENT IS BEING DONE TO THIS CAT? WHAT IS THAT STICKING INTO ITS HEAD? WHAT WAS DONE TO ITS EYE? WHAT COMPANY/LABORATORY DID THIS? DID THIS CAT GET RESCUED? PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I WANT TO WRITE TO THE COMPANY! THANKS

it is becoming EZ to see animal research cant work. (MRMCMED.ORG humaneseal.org) just look at the money (charities) spent. every year charities spend 100s of millions of dollars on animal research. STILL no cure, how many more millions (Billions??) before they stop being so GULLIBLE.. and stop this INSANITY.. do they STILL believe the world is flat? and get this!.. susan g. komen LIED to her dying sister by telling her she would do all she could to beat cancer. doesnt that also sound like talking to peta if not others (mrmcmed.org) of ALL the times a person would want to hear from the other side of animal research THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE TIME.. but not susan. animal research has NEVER been validated (pcrm.org). “there is a laundry list of problems with mouse models of cancer research” dr.bob weinburg, director of the ludwig center for cancer research at m.i.t.

  • Tam says:

I love how many folks who support PETA have had more cosmetic surgery than any other folks would have in their life time. I am sure pigs had suffered a great deal with a breast implant sticking out of and exploding in their bodies so people can have them for strictly esthetic purposes. No one can claim they have not had family, friends or themselves benefit from medical animal testing.

  • SRP says:

Ignoring the vandalism I’m going to have to go with the kid.

  • Matt says:

Um, I would rather see the HUMAN SAPIENT GIRL alive than the RAT. Call me crazy, but I think human life is more valuable than a rats.

  • James says:

Please Sana and Rita enlighten us with these “alternatives.” I see you throwing a phrase around to look important, but that’s it. @ E Schoales: I completely agree so here is something disturbing for you. Every year peta kills thousands of dogs and cats because they haven’t found a home for them…whew, at least they weren’t tested on.

  • grant says:

i still wanna know when you guys are gonna post videos and comment over what the savages in the faroe islands are doing RIGHT NOW to the pilot whales and dolphins?! the insane barbarity that these whales go through is some of the bloodiest and violent treatment that i’ve ever seen a cetacean go through..and i’ve seen alot!!

  • Maya Madelene says:

the ONLY reason why ANY doctor goes into research is to help people – once there and told the ONLY reason they are in research is to justify a paycheck, the doctor who spent years in medicine studying and paying for it, is stuck doing work to save his *** and some if they have no integrity stay because of the pay. I’ve spoken to many: “you won’t believe what goes on on the tenth floor of the hospital, you need an iron stomach” one doctor told me. It is horrid and unenecessary, for WE ALL KNOW that NO ONE is looking for a cure for ANY chronic disease. If they find a cure, they’re out of a millions of dollars in hospital care, pills and more. THEY DON’T WANT A CURE When medicine is a business – cure is not necessary. Chronic patients make the money. HENCE the poison in food. -WHAT?? Our food is poisoned? – YES, start with your toothpaste, then water and go on…LEAVE ANIMALS ALONE!!! THEY ARE HEROS TO SURVIVE THIS LONG IN A WOLRD ABUSED BY HUMANS

  • Kalama Halamezad says:

Rita, I can’t speak for the group who posted the billboard, but I can assure you that animal research is often not cheaper, and that most academic researchers are not motivated by profit (this line of work doesn’t pay well in the majority of cases). I respect that many of you have ethical objections to this practice, but is it really in anyone’s best interest to just write whatever prejudiced opinions you have with no regard for fact? Without understanding people with different opinions, how do you expect to ever manage to work out something that will actually improve circumstances for animals?

  • Sara Keltie says:

This is brilliant! Well done to whoever altered the sign! Will follow your example should an opportunity arise.

  • Rita says:

Experimenting on animals is cheaper than using alternatives. Those who experiment on animals care only about maximizing PROFIT, they don’t care about the girl at all. The billboard is ridiculous, only people with less than half a brain will actually agree to that nonsense.

  • Portland Animal Defense League says:

Be sure to check out the parody site ResearchKills.org and pdxanimaldefenseleague.org to see more about FBR’s ridiculous billboard campaign.

  • E Schoales says:

Large public ads are a great idea. Most people know very little about what goes on behind the scenes, and seem to prefer it that way. Confronting and disturbing people with the realities on a daily basis is a good approach.

  • xSanax says:

Once the lead-singer of the band Starlit (look them up on MySpace) posted the webpage presence of those “scientists” and I used my free and legal right to send them such a “kind” message… Now that I know so much more and still too less I know that animal testing IS unnecessary and cruel – and easy to practice. Actually we DON’T have to choose between two options, we don’t have to pay with lives to cure, that’s actually no development and no science – it is wrong, but not “only” morally it is also unscientific. You stress mice only by holding them in your hand what decreases the power of their immune defense. Knowing at least such a fact would lead to the knowledge that every result coming from such experiments lead to WRONG results. But that’s just one example. If you consider that HUMANKIND and MICE or any other living being are TOTALLY different species (even if they are related via their genes) you cannot reflect the results of experiments from non-human animals to animals! Animals react totally different than we do! ANIMAL TESTING IS WRONG AND ABSOLUTELY UNSCIENTIFIC If states would finally improve “alternatives”, accept them and make them lawfully obligatory, we wouldn’t face all these cruel acts anymore… There ARE alternatives, in fact there are a lot, and IN-Vitro Research is still developing. So, END ANIMAL TESTING AND GIVE CRUELTY-FREE ALTERNATIVES SPACE!!!
