Shocking Undercover Dairy Farm Footage

Written by PETA | April 21, 2011

PETA is launching a new initiative calling for basic animal welfare standards for cows on dairy farms on the heels of disturbing new undercover footage of dairy factory farms. The video footage from Mercy for Animals shows baby calves as they are beaten with pickaxes and hammers and have their budding horns burned out of their skulls without being given any pain relief. A PETA undercover investigation into a Land O’Lakes supplier found similar abuse.

PETA is asking pizza and ice cream chains, grocery stores, and other dairy vendors to commit to buying only from farms that adhere to these minimal standards of animal care:

  • Keeping facilities clean and providing flooring, foot care, and bedding
  • Immediately euthanizing “downed” cows who can no longer walk
  • Ending de-horning and tail-docking, cruel procedures in which cows have a portion of their tails cut off and their horns cut out of their skulls
  • Banning the use of bovine growth hormone, which contributes to lameness and a painful inflammation of the udder known as “mastitis” and which has been banned in Europe and Canada
  • Providing group housing for female calves, without tethering

These standards would dramatically reduce the suffering of cows and their calves on dairy factory farms. You can help them, too, by always choosing one of the many available nondairy options

  • Susan says:

I could only watch 10 seconds of this video.this is so disturbing..I can’t believe anyone would treat an animal like this..I am so happy to be a Vegan..I hope everyone who watches this video will stop supporting the meat and dairy industries !!!

  • lisa says:

As a Country you should hold your head in shame the rest of the world is watching

  • lisa says:

Im sorry to say this but America should be ashamed of themselves i know no Country is innocent to animal abuse but no matter how much undercover investigations you do still these poor farm animals are abused and tortured but nothing seems to be done to help these animals, in the UK we have animal abuse like everyone else but we educate the younger generation to the effect of eating meat not only eating meat the welfare of the animal but also to the envirvoment. America is a digrace to the world to let this animal abuse continue

  • Mommabear says:

OMG…this is horrible!! despicable and completely horrendous!! I couldn’t even watch more than a few seconds! How can these people even justify this slaughter and cruelty? How do they sleep at night? How do they look their children and loved ones in the eyes and feel worthy of their respect and love? This is so irresponsible and senseless! Please, please wake up and stop this ludicrous massacre!! Thank you PETA for being so strong, truthful and diligent!!

  • Irene Leggett says:

What planet does ‘where meat comes from’ live on? It sure isn’t the same one that is shown in the video, either that, or he/she works in the dairy industry and like all abusers, have to justify themselves. Not ‘man’ enough to admit that they are nothing but sadistic, abusive, barbaric, perverted cowards and bullies. Long may they all have nightmares!!!

  • Rat King says:

It seems to be a speciality of criminal diabolic idiots to torture bovine species! The last utterly bad news comes from France, where on April 22nd the bullfight was officially recognized as a ‘spiritual heritage of the state’! This means now they can apply for registering at UNESCO as a world heritage – and we all know what this would mean! Please PETA – and all the members – go to the site of CRAC! There you find the necessary telephone number and adresses for to contact the office of culture minister Frédéric Mitterrand who is responsible for this insane decision: a worldwide protest is now necessary! The bulls need you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maggy says:

I forgot to add that the owners said this would stop. Isn’t that what they all say when they are, “caught on camera?” Hasn’t just about every meat, egg, and dairy producer been caught doing the same things to pigs, chickens, cows, and sheep? They just tighten up their security and it is business as usual, as they put more pressure on lobbyists to try and make it a crime for anyone to tape such things. Imagine – it will soon be a crime not to do this, but to tape it.

  • Maggy says:

I guess the worse part of about this is wherever animals are killed and raised for food on factory farms, this is a normal day. Anyone who thinks it isn’t, is juts kidding themselves. The only way to stop this is to stop eating meat, dairy, and eggs.

  • Vicky says:

This is horrible and unacceptable! Why can’t PETA, the Humane Society, ASPCA, SPCA all come together and make a commercial or post massive adds to display this? Everybody in this country should know about this, not just us animal lovers! They should know they are eating meat from “downed cows”, which is not supposed to be happening per the USDA!! If more people saw this, there would be less demand for meat and poultry. These images leave a lasting impression, and have a way of “turning peoples stomachs”. I will continue to support PETA and all agencies listed above!

  • kathy says:

To the post by Where Meat Comes From: Those are blatant lies. Most cows are living in factory farms with conditions nothing like you described. I take it you have a monetary interest in the dairy/meat industry.

  • Kayt says:

Am I dreaming right now? How the **** can this even be legal? How the **** can humans even do this?! There’s something wrong in the head with them. Seriously we need to act now because this just is not right, and I will do anything in my will to stop this from happening. Anything we can do peta, let us know because unless your **** in the head, you’d want this to stop.

  • Mara says:

This is absolutely horrendous, I cannot not believe people do this and sleep at night.

  • Amy Hass says:

This is terrible. It made me cry. I will never by another Land of Lake products again and wish the same Karma on the owners of the company!

  • Katrina says:

This is one of the most unethical things that I have ever seen. This and the way horses are treated and killed. You know I cant imagine knowing a human as careless as the individuals HAVE to be. What person in their right mind could actually do this to animals and find a way to justify it. This is discusting and inhumane. How would they like to be treated this way. Or how would they like for their children to be taken away from their mothers. If we do not do something to stop this who will? Who will help these helpless animals, if we do not? I encourage you as an american, as a human being, do what you can to stop this.

  • Tracey says:

OMG! This is soooo sad….I would LOVE to do the same thing to these people that do these cruel heartless acts. Because they deserve it and no less. Why can’t we do the same to people. I care more for animals then I do for people…… I so wish I could get my hands on these SICK individuals.

  • Where Meat Comes From says:

Flooring and bedding are provided for cow comfort. As the saying goes, “No foot, no horse,” the same applies to cattle. Dairy farms hire professional hoof trimmers to trim their cow’s hooves. Euthanizing downed cows? What if the cow, with treatment, can stand again? Is that really fair? Disbudding (as it’s properly called) is done for other cow’s safety, as well as the workers who take care of the cattle. When these half-ton animals have horns, they know it, and they use it to their advantage to get their way (moving others out of the way to get to the feed, moving workers out of the way because they’re in the way of where they want to walk, etc). Tail docking is done for sanitary reasons, and only about 1/3 of the tail is removed, which removes the switch. Only 5% of dairy cows are given rBST. Most calves are put in individual hutches to reduce the spread of disease (they are not tethered, either). When they are weaned, they are then moved to group housing.

  • chicagogirl says:

This is atrocious!! Who does this?? What type of human being watches and promotes this type of suffering? Shameful.

  • Spider Woman says:

This is the horrible awful proof of western decay and a criminal conception of life: the complete disrespect of Mother Cow and Mother Earth! Inadmissible and unexcusable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kathy says:

Thank you PETA for helping to reduce their suffering. I’ve been vegan for a few years now after seeing disturbing images of the lives of animals on farms.
