We’ve Got a Second Chance to End Horse Slaughter

Written by Michelle Kretzer | March 18, 2013

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act died last year when the congressional session ended and, along with it, our hope of permanently ending the slaughter of American horses for food in 2012. But we’re getting another chance.

Senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle have come together to sponsor the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act. The SAFE Act would prevent horse slaughter in the U.S. and would slam shut the loophole that currently allows horses to be shipped to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered.

Last year, more than 160,000 horses were crammed onto transport trucks and sent on grueling journeys across the border. A PETA undercover investigation of one such transport revealed that horses—including thoroughbred horses formerly used for racing—who were being shipped to Canada spent 36 hours on a truck in subfreezing conditions and were not given rest, food, or even a sip of water. Inside the slaughterhouse, workers shot the horses in the head with a captive-bolt gun, but at least 40 percent of them were still conscious after the first shot and had to be shot several times. Then they were strung up by one leg, and their throats were slit.

A full 80 percent of Americans oppose horse slaughter. But just feeling that way won’t help. Please, let this be the thing that you do to help animals today. Urge your senators and representatives to support the SAFE Act.

Horses are beautiful and majestic creatures that have served humans for centuries, and what do they get in return by some indecent and inhumane people–cruelty. Sending them to slaughter is unspeakable and horrific! I pray every day that good people in this world will preside and end the actions of people that act like they have no soul or heart!

It will be helpful if its supported. The PETA statement for horse slaughter is one of the main reasons the Oklahoma horse slaughter law passed. The legislators used that statement as a banner.

Yes, this has got to stop. This industry is frought with thieves, cruelty, deceitfulness, and the list goes on. The lies keep piling up, yet the industry keeps on running. I would love to see the Safe Act passed and hopefully have a HUGE impact on Canada.

STANDING STRONG FOR HORSES! Here in the United States of America, we LOVE horses. We ride, show, breed, race, jump, work, have as pets & partners, never EAT THEM! This is all about GREED/lies/torture which we should have NO PART OF! Why not be known for the country with the greatest Equestrians? Right now, we kind of fail compared to the rest of the world, like Great Britain/New Zealand/Ireland all better than us. This doesn’t have to be true. We could possibly turn our image around, and BE BETTER THAN EVERYONE! Please let’s NOT ALLOW the United States of America to be known as a greedy, inhumane, cruel heartless, uncaring group of self-centered zombies. As the mother of an equestrian, who now makes her living training horses… to be human trusting ( by the way) I BEG OF YOU WITH ALL MY HEART TO STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER, EVERYWHERE! Besides all of the reasons from the heart, how about the health risk issues? Are these poor innocent beautiful animals free of chemicals? I bet NOT! Please stop… (Crying now, thanks a lot)

This is an excellent Bill and we must get it passed. However, it should be remembered that American Kill Buyers will claim “their” horses are riding stock/entertainment/racing/leather, etc., and still transport into Mexico to a third party, who can then take them to slaughter. So we must be on alert at all times, with horse and equine rescues for the so-called unwanted animals. Although this Bill is excellent, American Kill Buyers will try to get around the law. Horse/equine slaugherhouses in Canada will probably close soon, but unfortunately, Mexico does not have plans to close horse/equine slaughterhouses.

  • Ramona Myler says:

I beg you to stop the slaughter of horses.

  • Victoria Armstrong says:

Please stop this cruel abuse of life. Animal torture shows how we as humans really are and we shoukd trear every animal equal to ourselves. I rescued an ex racer from meat and after some tlc he is a wonderful man.

  • Betty McQuillan says:

Please stop the slaughter of horses. No living thing deserves the fate these innocent creatures have to endure. Please think and don’t do to them what you wouldn’t want done to yourself.
