Sean Taylor

Written by PETA | December 4, 2007

Regular readers of this blog will know that I am a possibly just ever-so-slightly overzealous fan of the Washington Redskins (or was, until their abysmal fourth-quarter performance against the Bills this weekend). And most people will have heard the tragic news about Redskins safety Sean Taylor, who was killed last week in what appears to have been a botched robbery attempt at his home.

Like most Skins fans, I was pretty shaken when I heard the news, and I’ve been following the story very closely over the past few days to try and make some sense of it. One of the few positive things that came up in the reports about the tragedy was that Taylor had adopted a vegetarian diet in the last few weeks of his life, which, in addition to breaking some old-school stereotypes about professional athletes, struck me as a nice, uplifting fact to latch onto as we remember Taylor this week. As well as being one of the most athletically gifted football players I’ve had the pleasure of watching, Sean Taylor was a fascinating, complex individual, and along with thousands of other football fans, I deeply regret that I will no longer have the opportunity to follow his career.

I have been trying to keep up on the news with what happened it is terrible. Jack I know when you are a fan of someone especially when they play the greatest game ever…it is hard to deal with. That is sad that he passed so horribly and it really does not matter to the Anonymous idiot.. it may not have increased his life span but cut people some slack dude everyone needs to grieve in their own way. Regardless of what you believe. It was a terrible accident and Thanks Jack for mentioning the new life style he had adapted too. Does not matter to me thou it was a bad thing that happened. I would feel just as bad if one of my Packers or Brewers dies like that. Hang in there to all of his fans!!

I want to add something else. There is something very wrong when Vick will be tried hopefully he will get 5 years by a judge who probably eats meat.

I love it when people say something like ehem.. Anonymous “YOU CONDONE THE NFL WHICH ENDORSES MEAT CONSUMPTION.” It seems that most of the world endorses meat consumption so let me go kill myself because I refuse to take part in a world that endorses meat consumption. What do you propose people do in a life where we don’t follow absolutes?? You know what I think it is… when people try to do good you always get “those” people ehem… Anonymous that will just point you out and pick at every little thing about you. I think it is easier try to point out bad things in people because then you have less time to deal with your errors.

what’s this kind of anonymous sucker uphere! i thought that we got rid of mars but hell seems to open it’s throat again!!!

Don’t even try to diss Jack. He watches football players on TV and has nothing to do with the NFL corporation or their decisions. Yes an ad for Cambell’s Chunky Soup Rigatoni and Meatballs sounds gross bears the NFL stamp. However that should not interfere with anyone wanting to watch sports. I have dealt with this issue before. I watch Animal Planet religiously which sometimes runs commercials really opposite to their mission for companies like Hamburger Helper and Swanson Chicken Broth. I contacted them with a WTF letter but they did not respond. I still watch Animal Planet since the shows are amazing and I know that I would never support those companies.

    Wow…that last guy total idiot.

Beingmaybe a vegetarian didn’t increase his life span. Amazingly Jack you condone the NFL which endorses meat consumption en masse.

I never knew who Sean Taylor was until he was killed. I usually only follow the hometown team STL Rams… What happened to him was terrible and I hope they find who did it and prosecute to the fullest extent. There are more and more athletes going veggie it seems. So it must be good for you

My boyfriend is a huge Redskins fan and we are both vegetarians. He is considering getting a Taylor jersey and having it framed. Neither of us knew of his dietary conversion. Thank you for the blog post and info.
