Seal Hunt Protesters Call Arrest an “Act of War”

Written by PETA | April 14, 2008

According to Reuters, the captain and first officer of the Farley Mowat, which belongs to the anti-seal hunt Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, were arrested by Canadian authorities, who representatives from Sea Shepherd say boarded the ship outside Canada’s territorial limit last week. As you might imagine, both sides are telling some conflicting stories about the event, and while I’m really trying to maintain a bit of journalistic distance in reporting this thing, it’s pretty tough to take Canada’s Fisheries Minister seriously while he’s also using every opportunity to try and claim that this is humane, and, like, totally above board from an ethical perspective. In the meantime, Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd is pissed. Here’s how he described the incident:

“This is an act of war. The Canadian government has just sent an armed boarding party onto a Dutch registered yacht in international waters and has seized the ship.”

I’ll let you know once I can get some more details on this—in the meantime, there’s no question about the fact that Canada has declared war on seals. The Canadian government will be killing 275,000 of these animals this year in a barbaric hunt that has provoked international outrage. If you want to take a moment to let these people know how you feel about that, you can sign on to PETA’s campaign against the seal hunt here.

Hi Judith thank you for your kind and strong words they help all of us to overcome one day! claudia marrapodi

An interesting article came out a few days ago in the “National”newspaper in Canada about the realities of the true cost of the barbaric seal slaughter to the taxpayers of Canada…sad to say that when wasting their money people usually listen.Thank you to the National for the great expose’.On another note I would like to mention another terrible situation that most people find hard to believe and that is polar beargrizzly bear hunting.Even in this day and age this still goes on.I would somehow like to get some contact info out there to a very brave and rich entrepreneur named Rick Herscherthis fine American man takes wealthy people from around the world up to Canada to kill 100’s of bears every springI thought global warming was taking care of thatat $15000+ a trip.I also would like to mention this man has not paid 1 cent to any governments revenue coffersIRS or Revenue Canada so call and report him as I have…the more people that do the quicker he will be shut down. His phone 9545402523…give him a call and let him know what a brave man he really is.The bears and myself thank you.The Earth Guardian

I’m with you animalfriend these men have evolved into murderous killing machines. They enjoy the bloody carnage they bring to the nursey where the babies once slept. SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Peace my friend!

  • animalfriend says:

Keith Birch! no these baby killing bastards don’t do it for to survive but out of pleasure as they admitted in the newspapers during the last carnage! educate yourself!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Keith “Sealing is an offseason activity conducted by commercial fishermen from Canada’s East Coast. Even in Newfoundland where more than 90 percent of the sealers live sealing income accounts for less than 1 percent of that province’s gross domestic product and only 2 percent of the landed value of Newfoundland’s fishery.” With the distinct possibility that the EU may ban seal products if I was a sealer I would start looking for another way to supplement my income. If the feds had been as obsessively pesky and annoying to foreign fishermen as they have been lately to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society there would still be cod. As far as free publicity you can chalk that up to the continuing blunders of the Canadian government. I don’t need to take a trip to an abattoir thank youI don’t eat any of the above.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Claudia Marrapodi I hear you and I am with you all the way. Peace my friend!

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Mr. Birch Paul Watson and his crew are working their butts off. I don’t see anyone else doing it. I hope they take a good chunk of change I am going to go ahead and send them an extra 1000.00 thank you for inspiring me. Peace! P.S. I don’t eat meat. P.S.S. The sealers are cold blooded murderers.

  • Keith Birch says:

I was born and raised in the UK. A place described by an Irish teacher as having a Royal Society for the protection of animals but only a National Society for the protection of Children. The seal harvest takes place in the full glare of publicity in order to attract donations many of which come from unknowing members of the public to the likes of Paul Watson and his ilk. Ask him what he pays himself from those donations. Take a trip to your local abattoir and watch the lambs calves piglets and chickens being prepared for your consumption. The seal harvest assists maritime families to survive. Their main source of income the cod fishery was decimated ably assisted by European fishing nations with their undersized nets.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Hello Mary What Ellis saw was an innocent baby being clubbed to death and he wanted to stop the carnage. Anyone who would not try to stop this horrific slaughter would have to be void of a soul. We can always agree to disagree! Peace Mary!

  • Avatar says:

UnHippy did you ever hear about ‘fructivores’? well i’m one of them! eating fruits is not harming neither animals nor trees and grass and the kernels go back to the earth to become a new tree or plant as GOD told us to do so in Paradise so go back to Paradise!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

UnHippy If you want to save more plants go veg. Eating plants at source requires far fewer to die than eating them recycled through animals used for meat.

  • little drummer boy says:

    Mary murder deserves death penalty!

  • UnHippy says:

How does one distinguish between what deserves a death sentence and what does not? The PETA and it’s supporters stance against the seal hunt and for the soy hunt seems a good start. So let’s all join together in sparing one living thing and consuming another.

  • Mary says:

Judith Ellis an 11 year old expressed a wish for violence hitting people over the head and you say she has a beautiful heart? This is a fundamental problem of the movementpeople abhor violence against animals yet become so angry and full of hate that they wish for or speak lightly of violence against humans. While I understand some humans are guilty and deserving of punishment an extreme level of punishment is not something to wish for and enjoy. Don’t you see that by encouraging and appreciating talk of violence from a child no less you just stoop to their level? That is why Ghandi oftquoted on this site espoused nonviolence even in reaction to violence and his enemies. Practice what you preach or change your message. Respectfully Mary H.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Dear Ellis Please keep that beautiful heart all throughout your life. You and your friends will make this world a better place. And please never forget to protect the animals. They need us so badly. Judith Peace!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Hi Judith Sorry I’m really not aware of any “retirement packages” for sealers by the Canadian governmentanyone else? There have been other humane alternatives proposed but the sealers seem to prefer to continue clubbing and shooting baby seals. In 2006 Cathy Kangas the CEO of PRAI Beauty offered $16 million to compensate the sealers if they did not kill seals. She also proposed working with the Canadian government to institute a program of humane sealwatching much like whale watching. The sealers could then act as guides. These overtures were flatly rejected. Also a few years back a German businessman if memory serves me correct proposed building a plant in Newfoundland to make pillows etc. from the combed fur of the molting whitecoats. Although at no cost to Canada this initiative too went nowhere. The seal hunt is certainly not a free ride for the Canadian taxpayer. The rescue last spring by the Canadian Coast Guard of the icebound sealers in their nonice class woodenhull longliners set back the Canadian taxpayers at least $3.4 million not to mention all the multitude of expenses incurred so far in 2008. All in all it probably would be cheaper for the government just to pay the sealers to stay at home i. e. a retirement package.

  • Deana says:

Again I must quote this appalling act by this….. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi How can humans say they are civil when they can do this to an animal. My heart hurts for those who are harmed by another human being even if just an animal. God Bless

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

To everyone on the Mighty Sea Shepherd my heart and soul is with you. You are mighty and trying to help the innocent and now they are referring to you as terroristcalling you that in itself is a crime. Captain Watson you are an amazing human being May Buddha and God bless you and your crew. This is plain and simple animal murder I don’t know for the life of me why it is not considered animal cruelty. They should let the people vote on this. This needs a vote now. The snow has turned red with the blood of newborns. The snow has turned red because they are slaughtering newborn babies. You murders….. May you all rot in hell made from newborns blood. You non caring Bastards. When Paul Mc Cartney was on Larry Kings show he spoke about the goverment giving these sealers a retirement package but someone was against it. Michele or Mike could you help explain that if you know anything about it please. Peace!

  • ellis says:

im am 11 years old and the things i see in life are the most worst things that could ever happen why do people kill seals the people who kill seal shouild be hit over the head see how they like it me and my best friend have watched these clips and were just about to cry if you now someone who hits seals please make them stop please im asking you in a nice way please help them now not later if you turn from this you are a coward and a horrid member of this world thanks

  • lynda downie says:

Agreed Michele and Mike Quinoa. Most CBC radio commentators I’ve listened to show disrespect for animal activists too. And our great Canadian gov’t Good old Loyola Hearn calls Paul Watson a “money sucking manipulator”. And Danny Williams calls Paul a “terrorist” because he’s heard others use the term to great effect.

  • Villanelle says:

Keep the comments coming folks this needs far more attention than it’s getting esp. international coverage. Tell people write letters to your government representatives and media outlets inundate the blogosphere with your views. And hey celebrities and people whose voices resonate in the media Where the hell are you? This is a serious issue that needs some really largescale denunciation!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Good one Maureen though we are in fact a great ape. Reminds me of a quote by Mark Twain “If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man but deteriorate the cat.”

  • Tom says:

I am a Canadian that is against the so called “seal hunt”. A hunt is when the animal has a chance to escape. Sealers simply walk up to the seal pups and bash their brains in with a hakipik. Some are skinned alive. These morons are inhumane uneducated and barbaric. They defend this practice by saying it gives them much needed revenue. I say to them join the 21st Century. Go back to school learn a trade do something productive and stop staining Canada’s reputation around the world as a just and compassionate society.

  • claudia marrapodi says:

day and night every second i’m with these heroes of the Sea Shepherd Society and i’m deeply regretting to be just an old woman who cannot be there on the ice with them but i curse every criminal government approving this holocaust on the innocent seal babies! i would kill everyone of them with my own hands if i could and i’m signing this here with my blood! and to all the onlooking animal hating jerks and wankers i tell this bite the dust and go to hell where you belong to!!!!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

The Canadian government is on a witchhunt. They’ve appropriated the Farley Mowat’s logs and GPS records which are needed by the SSCS to prove they were in fact in international waters. The government considers the SSCS a safety threat to sealers yet they permit sealers to go out in nonice class wooden and aluminumhulled boats. In other words they really don’t give a damn about sealersthis is just one big political football for them. The absolute incompetence of the coast guard in the deaths of the 4 sealers demonstrates where the real threat to safety is. And Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams has the audacity to call Captain Paul Watson a “terrorist” for the “crime” of trying to protect baby seals. He makes a mockery of the word and insults and belittles those who have suffered at the hands of true terrorists.

  • Linda Simard says:

The other day a female baby seal was videotaped being clubbed thirteen times by two sealers before the poor thing died…and this Loyola Hearn Canadian Fisheries Minister claims is a humane way to die.

  • Michele says:

This is so depressing I was reading comments left on CBC’s online news that’s the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the nonCanucks out there about this story and there were so many people just completely ridiculing Paul Watson Farley Mowat and anyone else involved in this as well as other animal rights protests. One person even said “I bet Watson wears leather…” and another wondered where “Peg leg Mills” was in all of this. Clearly these CBC readers are largely redneckshuntersinhumane jerks! Good for Farley Mowat himself though for bailing out the ship’s crew!

  • mfagnani says:

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

My God its a blood bath.

  • Aran says:

Forget “journalistic distance”! Sea Shepherd Rock! Canadas govt. have acted unlawfully hiding there abuse in the way animal abusers do!

  • Maureen says:

Shame on Canada it is obvious these bullies do not want Sea Shepherd to show what they have filmed this killing season skinning the seals alive business as usual. Paul Watson called the sealers ‘cigarette smoking apes’ I love you Paul but it’s kind of insulting for real apes to be compared to these sadistic sealers.

  • Annie says:

Why did Canadian authorities arrest the seal hunt protesters?

  • Jess says:

regardless of the seal hunt and whether or not it should happen or not if the farley mowat needs to be taken in to make sure no casualties happen of a human kind..then im inclined to agree with it. if they were within our waters which is different under fishing laws than just international waters then steps to ensure the safety of BOTh protesters as well as canadian officials should be taken…..that being said i applaud what these protesters do and am disgusted by the actions of my government allowing this hunt to take place.

  • Tywana Deering says:

I have to say that I am a little offended by your choice of words. Canada has not declared war on the seals more people than not in Canada are against the seal hunt. Myself and my family are some of those people that are taking a stand against animal cruelty. “These people” highlighted in red is also inappropiate. Lets not blast an entire nation because of an ignorant minority. Tywana
