Scott Niedermayer, Duck Defender

Turns out that Scott Niedermayer, the captain and star defenceman for NHL Stanley Cup champions The Anaheim Ducks, is a duck defender in more ways than one. He just dashed off a letter to all 50 members of the Chicago City Council, asking them to uphold a ban on foie gras that is currently in danger of being repealed thanks to the efforts of industry lobbyists. Here’s what Scott had to say in his letter, which you can read in its entirety here:

“As an Anaheim Duck, I hate to see real ducks tortured so that a handful of wealthy chefs can serve their diseased organs. Please uphold this compassionate law.”

If you live in Chicago, please take a moment to follow Scott’s compassionate example, and sign a petition to the Chicago City Council here. It takes, like, 15 seconds, and it will make a huge difference for the ducks and geese who have pipes rammed down their throats so that the aforementioned industry lobbyists can make a few bucks.

Way to go Scott! It’s nice to see a nice young Canadian boy sticking up for ducks. I don’t care if he wrote the letter or had someone draft it for him he signed it and that’s what counts.

steve nice flunky remark. here’s what the REAL scott would have said “dude stop chocking those poor well poor basterds excuse my french I’m a hockey player. Well THOSE companies SHOULD REALLY STOP doing that!!!” still it gets an E for effort from me. glad he’s on our side. cheers!

Lorena I was upset about that too and wrote a letter to Gov. Schwarzenegger. When I first found out what foie gras is I was horrified. Scott way to go! This practice needs to end. It is by its very nature a product of torture. It’s horrible cruelty to beautiful helpless animals for a luxury item that’s actually really bad for the consumer. And yes! It should be illegal everywhere.

  • Aleasha says:

Foie gras is horrible. Those poor ducks. It should be illegal everywhere!

WOW! When I saw the headline I thought “I know that name” being a longtime hockey fan. But I didn’t know Scott Niedermayer was a compassionate PETA person! YAY SCOTT!

I’m not gonna lie I’m surprised anybody on this site knows who Niedermayer is. Oh well that’s why I love Scotty. Good on ’em. You’d best not be retiring you bastard!

A very very highly admirable MAN! Now Scott is what is called a celebrity with MORALS! I wonder if the anti’s are going to show up on this one to declare their usual uneducated nonsense that animal rights’ activism is for fags and whimps. In case they do show up Antianimal rights’ activists the majority of the strongest leaders in animal rights’ activism just happen to be MEN! REAL MEN!…who have a vast education morals strength integrity convictions dedication abilities and capabilities that CANNOT ever be defeated or compromised. Sexual preference is not an issue that determines the qualities of any animal rights’ activist.

Way to go Scott! I saw a male and female mallard in a woods this spring and I couldn’t get over their quiet beauty and serenity. It seems the world is finally starting to wake up regarding foie gras. That’s why he’s the Captain.

As a hockey fan for many years since I was 5 I am really pleased to see such a well known hockey player take a stand for the ducks. This is great news!!! Scott just won the Stanley Cup so he is well known among many hockey fans. I hope others follow his lead.

  • Lorena Higgins says:

Why does California have to wait until 2012 to ban foie gras…what a disgrace!!!! DO IT NOW!

  • Brianna Fritchey says:

  • ECHO says:
