Sarah Silverman Says Circuses Suck

Written by PETA | July 22, 2011

Sarah Silverman doesn’t think there’s anything funny about hurting animals. The comedian and provocateur has fired off a letter on behalf of PETA to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking that four ailing elephants traveling with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus be seized. These four girls are still on the road and being forced to perform despite the fact that PETA drew the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s attention to this arthritis and lameness more than nine months ago.

Performing circus tricks is a painful struggle for these animals … Yet Ringling’s elephant handlers—who have zero vet experience—continually stab the animals with sharp metal rods called bullhooks in order to keep them performing despite their ailments.

Sarah points out that veterinarians have documented incontrovertible evidence showing that Nicole, Karen, Juliette and Sara are being forced to perform grueling tricks despite suffering from lameness. Nicole and Karen also suffer from painful arthritis—the number one reason that captive elephants are euthanized.

Add your voice to Sarah’s by asking Secretary Vilsack to order these four hurting elephants off the road.

i worked for the cruelest show on earth and it is breaking my heart to think of these gentle beings, that made ringling rich thru their suffering are being made to watch their babies suffer all thru the long long lives they live… circuses.com …is a site that will make you sick.. we can look and leave but they are suffering 24/7 forever…. even spain and mexico have started humane no kill bull fights! the people hurting these precious babies in front of their mothers that would normally still be nursing them for years more, ohhhhh please lets shut them down..

  • Sylvia Rodriguez says:

The horror of what is done to these majestic beings demands that Wringling Brothers be shut down! Learn and teach compassion for a change. The children could use that lesson.

  • Jean Senogles says:

People outside America often think of it as the epitome of civilisation……..and yet you are still debased enough to allow this sort of behaviour. Ghandi was of the opinion that a nation was to be judged by the way it treated it s animals!

  • Rohana says:

Think reverse…. Put you in the place of an innocent animal. God created all of us to live free to love each other also to give care to each other. Not make some pain & to cheer…. Think from out side!!!!

  • SUE GRIFFITHS says:

What is so hard to understand? Any animal not only wild animals don’t belong in a circus. It is cruel and the animals used are not living their lives as nature intended. Anyone who makes money out of animals is evil.

  • Kathy says:

Wild animals belong in the wild…period. These poor abused elephants should be roaming free with their herds. I cannot understand why this barbaric treatment of animals is still accepted and tolerated. We need more people like Sarah Silverman to speak out for animals.

  • siv white says:

come on America, do something about this

  • BRANDE says:

this is not entertainment its greed and blood money any one who buys tickets are only contributing to the cruelties of animals… it is so sad….

  • mary e bassnett says:

its disgusting, how would they like it if someone took a sharp stick to them and made them perform i hope all circuses get shut down then they,ll have to get a decent job like the rest of us dont know how anyone can be so cruel

  • Diana says:

I love animals and I try to help them whenever I can as best I can. Slovakia supports you!!I believe that there are people who are not insensitive to the nature..Thank you Sarah

  • Joel says:

There must be some sort of law implemented with a serious fine, for the extreme abuse to not happen, so frequently. I think that if PETA pushes for a constitutional law, it wont eliminate the problem, but it would make the problem occur less frequently.

  • Holly says:

Thank you, Sarah!!!!!! I feel the same way!

  • Leo says:

Another reason I have avoided the circus since I was a kid, wild animals..(I use the term animals loosely since alot of them are smarter than we are) belong in the wild.

  • HELENA says:

I DO HAVE A IDEA LET,S MAKE WONMANS WORK ND ANIMALS BE IN COMEND. THAT WILL BE THE PERFECT CIRCUS. NO MORE C’RUELTY WITH OURS DEARS FRIENDS ND BROTHER ANIMALS.
