‘Horse Whisperer’ Robert Redford Steps Up to Save Horses From Slaughter

Robert Redford has been passionate about horses his entire life. And he’s equally passionate about keeping them out of slaughterhouses. Together with former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, he formed the Foundation to Protect New Mexico Wildlife, a group whose first order of business is to join forces with other animal-advocacy organizations to block proposed horse slaughterhouses in New Mexico and Iowa.

  • It’s unlikely that anyone could scrub the smile off Ric O’Barry‘s face right now. The famed dolphin advocate and creator of The Cove was helping to rehabilitate three dolphins whom he had helped free from a Korean aquarium in order to prepare them to return to the sea. But when the netting in their ocean pen tore, dolphin Sampal decided that she was ready to head home. The frantic researchers quickly located her and found that she was with 50 other dolphins, thought to be members of her original pod, and was doing great. Her two friends will soon be released back into the ocean as well.
  • Honey bees have found an ally in another aviator, Richard Branson. The Virgin Group founder and outspoken advocate for a ban on shark finning wrote a piece on his blog explaining that we owe honey bees a debt of gratitude for pollinating a full one-third of our food supply and urged people to help protect the threatened animals.
