Ringling Wants More Animals to Abuse

Written by PETA | August 8, 2011

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will go far and wide to find more animals to exploit. Feld Entertainment, which owns this wretchedly cruel circus, has applied to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) to import eight tigers and one leopard who are currently being used in a circus in Germany. PETA has submitted comments and extensive supporting materials in opposition to this application, including a statement from a renowned tiger expert.

The Endangered Species Act prohibits the importation of endangered species except for “scientific purposes” or to benefit the survival of the species. Hard to make any of that comport with Ringling’s desire to haul the big cats around in boxcars and use whips to make them hop on their hind legs.

Federal law also strictly prohibits transporting any endangered species in the course of a “commercial activity,” and there is no question that the Ringling Bros. Circus is exactly that. The law further prohibits harming, harassing, and wounding endangered species and requires that they be maintained under humane and healthful conditions. Ringling’s well-documented history of animal abuse is clearly grounds to reject its import application, as PETA points out:

  • In September 2010, inspectors in Sacramento observed tigers in cages without water, food, or enrichment of any kind.
  • During a 2009 PETA undercover investigation, a Ringling trainer was videotaped beating tigers during dress rehearsals.
  • According to Ringling’s permit application, four tigers have died in the past five years as a result of the circus’s activities.
  • Since 1991, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has cited Ringling for 27 violations of the Animal Welfare Act with respect to the care of big cats, including for allowing a 2-year-old lion named Clyde to bake to death in a boxcar as the train crossed the Mojave Desert as well as for shooting a caged tiger five times with a shotgun.

Please share this troubling information with all the parents you know and urge them never to buy a ticket to Ringling or any circus using animals.

You’ve got to keep up wth the times. Its out dated and out of fashion now to exploit animals. There’s nothing good about what you do to animals. They were not made to entertain. Just because you earn your living doesn’t make it right it only makes it a necessity for you and thats not good enough for people who care for animals today. Do the decent thing and stop using animals in your circus. Modernisation is what you need to think about.

where is the entertainment in using wild animals as puppets after having trained them with pure cruelty? where is the fun, the joy? maybe for you. definitely not for sensible and sensitive people who should be your audience. it’s about time you change your agenda. and it’s already too late

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men. Alice Walker

I had protested the Ringling Bros when they brought their cruel animal acts here – stood out in front of our civic center with several others- handing out pamphlets and CDS that showed the abuse these animals undergo. For God sake people – wake up, we can have wonderful circuses without the abuse of these beautiful animals.

Sometimes I think maybe they start treating these animals worse (especially the elephants)since NOT ENOUGH people are not going to circuses so they have to work them HARDER and LONGER. I have been viewing the treatment of Elephants at Barnum and Bailey since 1995 and recently viewed backstage with the elephants in 2010 and its still happening. When is the abuse going to stop and is there more I can do. I know that they still employ tim Frisco with Barnum and Bailey circus even though Peta videotaped the abuse OVER AND OVER AGAIN. The elephant sactuary in Tennesee took alot of abused elephants from the circus and now they have a sactuary in Hohenwald tenn.

If you mistreat wild animals they will attack you at some point when you are not expecting it. Treat them with kindness & they will respond for you.

Circuses are cruel and need to be stopped! Animals deserve to live their lives, too! No one should ever support such an awful and abusive “event”. 🙁

  • Sharon says:

I was taken as a child to the circus, not even realizing what really takes place. I would never go to a circus as a thinking adult knowing the animals are beaten, and forced to do things they shouldn’t be doing. They should be free with grass and never for entertainment.

  • Carolyn Tibbs says:
