Reese Witherspoon Ditches Python Bag

Written by PETA | November 2, 2011

Reese Witherspoon left many people shell-shocked when she was spotted carrying a reptile handbag. The Legally Blonde star’s python-skin purse has been legally banned from being sold in California since 1970.

PETA immediately rushed Reese the video exposé that her Walk the Line co-star Joaquin Phoenix narrated, showing how reptiles used for clothing and accessories have their heads nailed to trees, are often skinned alive, and can languish for days before dying. Reese’s camp instantly responded to us, saying that Reese was dismayed to learn that the bag was made of real snakeskin and promised never to carry it again.

Reese said that she was grateful for the information we had sent her, and we were so appreciative that she bagged the bag that we sent her flowers as a thank-you. It’s good timing, too: Her upcoming movie This Means War co-stars Laura Vandervoort, who just shot a naked exotic-skins ad for PETA, so now those two can slink down the red carpet together rocking mock croc and fake snake. I agree with the posted sentiments about the cruelty. It’s painful to watch. That being said, do any of you have realistic ideas about controlling the python explosion in the Everglades?

  • Deborah says:

OMG!!! How on earth can money mean more to these human animals? I hope they are burned alive for skinning these poor creatures alive. I know they realize these animals can feel pain too! They are the one’s who need to be slaughtered! Maybe we should carry human skin accessories!

  • Deborah says:

Dear Reese, this isn’t about your bag, it’s about AVON and the fact that they have resumed animal testing for their products. Please, as their spokesperson, do something to help the poor helpless animals being tortured so we can look good. I’ve thrown out all the AVON I bought only a few months ago. Please help. Thank you. Deborah

What many people don’t even realize is that retiles have a special nervous system. They aren’t centralized to the brain, which is why they would stay alive so long. This is horrific, and I just can’t even find the words to say how disgusting some people are.

oh my god, thats horrific. i’ve always hated real animal products, but this is just atrocious. She had better put that bag away! Thanks PETA for the video, its very insightful and educational. More people should be aware of this awful atrocity.

I cried when I saw this video. I only wish that more people could see this video. We need to create more exposure to the horrific suffering that occurs for fashion.

  • angie says:

I have to admit that I have a phobia when it comes to reptiles. Seeing this video I could not help but cry at what I saw. Regardless of how afraid I am of these animals and may not like them, they don’t deserve that kind of treatment. What those people are doing is beyond cruel and I seriously hope that people will be compassionate towards these animals and quit wearing anything made with their skins. It’s not fashion. It’s murder.

I have never been much of a lizard fan. coincidentally today my son and I watched a WildKrattz episode about alligators. So it got me thinking how beautiful these animals really are. Whille watching the HORRIFIC video above I actually cried for the animals. No animal should be put through this. I never imagined our kind could be so HEARTLESS AND SOULLESS. Animal cruelty MUST BE STOPPED!!!
