Darren Aronofsky

A: The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky!

That’s right, the man best known for his portrayal of human suffering in movies such as the award-winning The Wrestler is now focusing on a different type of suffering … elephant suffering.

As a Brooklyn native, when Darren learned that notorious elephant abuser Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus would be setting up shop at Coney Island all summer long, he sprang into action faster than you can say RoboCop. He penned a powerful letter to the folks at Taconic Investments—who are donating the use of their Coney Island land to Ringling—asking them to reconsider their offer or, at the very least, impose restrictions that could reduce the suffering of elephants and other animals used by Ringling.

Not a Hollywood heavyweight? You can still follow Darren’s lead by sending your own letter to Taconic and New York City officials letting them know that you won’t stand up for animal abuse at Coney Island.

We have “freaks” who WANT to be on display at Coney Island so they can make money. That is the only way some of them can make a decent living but “they” won’t let them because it’s supposedly demeaning. But I guess it’s OK to beat elephants into submission to kids can look at them. Frankly when I was a kid I was more interested in the bearded lady and Snake Man.

I will never attend another ringling bros circus again. These animals should all be put into a sanctuary to live out the rest of their lives. If everyone stopped going to this display of torture they would be forced to shut down. Remember elephants never forget even when they see another elephant being abused. They all morn. It’s time to put Ringling out of business. It’s TIME.

The sadistic and cruel way in which the thugs masquerading as handlers take delight in hitting these majestic beautiful animals is nearly intolerable to watch. I am nuts or have we reached a point where elephants and all animals must no longer be abused. Enough is enough. Yet it continues. I’d like to strike out against these pricks but how? I sent Secretary Vilsack a letter so let’s see how Tommy does on behalf of these elephants who are hit and frightened by these assholes on a daily basis. How can this be? If there were a God he or she would be really pissed. In fact I want Him or Her to exist to punish assholes like these who abuse these elephants. A plague on all their houses. And no I don’t eat any meat. Zero. Am working on veganism.

I don’t understand WHY our government is allowing such animal cruelty to take place right before everyones eyes. SHAME on the government state regulators for saying it is ok to abuse these helpless brainwashed animals. Maybe if someone took a bull whip to you you would take action FOR ALL circus animals!

  • Mari says:

I do agree the day will come when elephants will no longer perform in circuses. I am sadden to know that the circus will be in Coney Island. It is sickening maybe the elephants should swing the performers to the water. That will be awesome!

  • Brien Comerford says:

The most animal friendly cities in the world are the ones with the highest percentage of devout Hindus and Jains living in them.

  • Tamra says:

Yes this one makes me sick to my stomach. What happened? I thought NYC was a bit ahead of the rest of us no? Ringling will be here this month one of the hottest months here in the desert and I will be there every day to protest. There WILL be a day when these magnificent animals will no longer have to perform hideous tricks for uneducated humans!!!

  • roxanne says:

I live in NYC and I am sickened by the lack of compassion and ethics in our city govt to permit elephants in coney island. It is cruel and sickening. I will never set foot in coney island while those poor elephants are there

  • POIF says:
