Promotion of Bullfighter’s Memoirs Shelved

Written by PETA | September 9, 2009

I can’t believe that anyone would waste precious time or money on a memoir about a bullfighter’s lifelong abuse and slaughter of bulls.

Frank Evans

That said, 67-year-old British matador Frank Evans somehow managed to find a publisher for his book, The Last British Bullfighter,* but he just lost out on a big promotion by U.K. bookstore chain Waterstone’s.

Waterstone’s scrapped its plans to promote Evans’ book, thanks to a flood of complaints from PETA Europe and other animal protection groups.

I also can’t believe that this elderly man, who’s had a quadruple bypass and knee replacement, has come out of retirement to torment bulls again (sad news, which Blog Guy at “Oddly Enough” managed to make amusing).

Frank, if you’re out there: Enough bull already! Lay down the damn sword, pick up a metal detector, and stroll off into the sunset.

a coward is someone who has to kill and torture animals to feel ‘tough’. someone who has to put animals through unbearable pain just to feel good about themselves and then brags about it. this man is coward and his book should NOT be published. i hope it fails miserabley P

    Thankyou bluebell xx

  • Bluebell says:

    Well said Emma.

  • emma says:

Edward.. if these matadors are not cowards then why do they have to weaken the bulls before getting in to the rings with them? if they are not cowards then why do they saw off inches of their horns to impair their ability? if they are not cowards why do they drug and stab the bulls beforehand? if indeed they were ‘brave’ to get in to the ring with a bull they wouldnt hinder the bulls fighting abilitys. they are cowards and cowards only fight things that stand no chance of defending themselves these bulls can not defend themselves when there are cowardly people that traumatise and pull down their defences before the fight. hence.. these matadors ARE COWARDS. get in the ring with a fully aware and un harmed bull and then say your ‘brave’.

Thank you vegancoin for telling everyone in detail what really goes on in this horrific bloodsport. When I hear about such torture i feel really ashamed to be human but then I remind myself that there are deecent and compassionate people out there. We have to do everything in our power to fight these evil people that sadly we and defenceless animals have to share this world with.

  • Edward says:

vegancoin your sources are clearly biased. If you can get 200 random people off of the streets calling matadors cowards then I would believe you. Most people would say it’s stupid. Not many would say cowardly. I am not trying to defend bullfighting but while mutilating bulls beforehand is lame I still would not want to be anywhere in the ring when it gets let out. It’s just like military trauma training. They do something you don’t like and then people like you call them cowards. I am thankful that we have an army that won’t attack civilians like third world countries do. While I disagree with their training methods I won’t be comparing them to AlQueda and Nazi Germany anytime soon.

This violence was prohibited by the Catholic Church over five centuries ago and yet it still goes on. This is NOT culture but just blatant cruelty and violence with no purpose but to show off the cowardice and stupidity of a killer. The bulls are brutalized before during and after their death is agonizing. This matador and his book can go to hell. Blood “sports” are for cowards and thugs.

  • vegancoin says:

edward bullfighting is cowardly as is any blood sport. according to sharkonline “Bullfighting is the most indefensible type of animal abuse. Our footage shows in horrifying detail what happens at these events. Dare yourself to look at the following videos and slide shows. You will not be able to deny the cruelty and pointlessness of what you see here. Bullfighting is not a fight at all. It’s a systematic torture killing that pits a gang of armed thugs against a lone frightened and wounded animal.” the article continues “Bulls are not the only creatures to suffer in bullrings. The tormented bull does not understand that it is the man on the horse’s back that is causing his pain only that he is in agony. He therefore sees the horse as his enemy as much as the man. It’s not unusual for horses used in bullfights to be so badly gored by the bulls that they have to be killed but only after they have been dragged from the ring and the view of the spectators. What about the “brave” matadors picadors and their ilk? Bullfighters are rarely injured and seldom killed in the ring. With their armory of weapons to weaken the bull until it can no longer fight their lives are not at great risk. In fact in the last 50 years only 10 bullfighters have been killed worldwide.” from httpwww.peta.orgMCfactsheetdisplay.asp?ID64 Bullfighting A Tradition of Tragedy Each year approximately 10000 bulls die in bullfights an inaccurate term for events in which there is very little competition between a nimble swordwielding matador Spanish for killer and a confused maimed psychologically tormented and physically debilitated animal.1 Preparations for the Bullfight The bulls are intentionally debilitated with heavy sandbags dropped on their backs.2 A study conducted by scientists at Spains Salamanca University found that 20 percent of the bulls used for fighting are drugged before they step into the ring in the sampling of 200 bulls one in five had been given antiinflammatory drugs which mask injuries that could sap the animals strength.3 One commonalbeit illegalpractice is to shave the bulls horns by sawing off a few inches which impairs their coordination.4 According to one matador some of the top performers may also ask breeders to deliberately select placid bulls . Its the only way to sustain your energy for the duration of the season.5 Ritualistic Slaughter In a typical event the bull enters the arena and is approached by picadores men on blindfolded horses. The picadores drive lances into the bulls back and neck muscles impairing the bulls ability to lift his head. They twist and gouge the lances to ensure a significant amount of blood loss. Then come the banderilleros on foot who proceed to distract and dart around the bull while plunging banderillasbrightly colored sticks with harpoon points into his back.67 When the bull has weakened from blood loss these banderilleros run the bull in more circles until he is dizzy and stops chasing. Finally the matador appears and after provoking a few exhausted charges from the dying animal tries to kill the bull with his sword.8 If he misses succeeding only in further mutilation an executioner is called in to stab the exhausted animal to death. I can see how people see this as a barbaric thing said one French celebrity matador Chamaco whose antics were described by one spectator as follows He yells at the animal gesturing wildly and triumphantly teasing it taunting it begging it to dance with him.9 from httpwww.starbreezes.com11bullfighting.html “Bullfighting is called a sport or sometimes even an art. It is neither. It is animal cruelty disguised as entertainment. Ever wonder why the bull never wins? Spectators are led to believe the matadors are actually risking their lives. In reality the bull has already been crippled and subdued in several ways and doesn’t stand a chance against its opponents. Several hours before the fight the bull is kept in a stall deprived of light and water. They are separated from other bulls. This is traumatic for them as bulls are naturally herd animals. Many bullfighters have reported that the bulls are also beaten and injured prior to being released into the ring. Their horns are also sometimes shaved. This involves sawing off a few inches of the horns. Bulls depend on their horns to help them navigate and shaving impairs their ability to do this. Shaving is illegal but many get away with it. Bulls are sometimes stabbed and wounded before being released in the ring. After being released he may be taunted by a group of humans who will frustrate him by forcing him to run in circles and collide.” add it all up and what do you get. Coward. pointless display of cruelty and violence against an animal that is victimized brutally tortured sadistically mutilated then killed. for nothing. get it straight.

  • Bluebell says:

What a horrible weak and pathetic excuse for a man. It sickens me to be the same species let alone the same nationality as someone so depraved. I know there was supposed to be a documentary about him on channel four but I’m not sure if it’s been shown yet or not.

  • Bill Brash says:

I don’t think you will allow this note on your site but here goes. I lived in Spain for over 20 years did attend one bull fight. That was enough! I found it barbarous medievil. However your planned protest at Waterstones appears to me to undemocratic does nothing for your cause. No one has the right to threaten folks just because they don’t agree with their views. There must be a better way to educate people against cruelty to animals.

  • Edward says:

Bullfighting is not cowardly. Having a bull run at you like that and standing still takes nerve. It might as well be a car chasing you down. It takes guts just to get in the pen. It is bloody. It is very stupid. It is not cowardly though. Besides old farts like Frank Evans should be playing bingo instead of bullfighting.

  • vegancoin says:

bullfighting is a very sadistic bloodsport that man must be a very sick twisted and cowardly individual with a “deformed macho” attitude. shameful.

  • Ahmad Arip says:

hopefully he is the last ever world bullfighter. i work at the bookstore and i will not shelf this book. nothing to be proud about if you a killer of the innocence.

  • kris shulfer says:

I will just 2nd what Brien said!!!

  • Dawn says:

yes good news about the cancelled promotion. what a sick old man he must be. Can’t he do something nice with his time. old sadist.

  • Aneliese says:

He’s proud of what he doeshis life. Unbelievable. This is nothing short of desicable.

  • Brien Comerford says:

Matadors are inarguably some of the most cruel and uncool carnirvores who blight humanity with their lust for shedding innocent blood.

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

It would just be really ironic if one of the bulls finally gores this old man…perhaps he should have titled his book “The Last British And Most Incredibly StupidBullfighter.”
