President to ‘Pardon’ Innocent Birds; Sentence Them to Death

On Wednesday of this week, President Bush will be performing one of the more morbid rituals this country celebrates—the annual “Turkey Pardon” ceremony in the Rose Garden, in which he will be magnanimously sparing the lives of two turkeys (out of a field of 12 animals whose lives were put up for a vote this month) and then sending the birds to Disneyland, where they will probably die within a year due to inadequate care. I suppose the turkeys in question will be more enthused about this turn of events than they would be about the alternative, but I have to say I can think of a number of ways that I’d rather spend my Thanksgiving than being manhandled by politicians and then sent to Disneyland to die…

As we normally do at this time of year, we sent a letter to the President this morning asking him to take steps to ensure that the “pardoned” birds receive the care they will need to live out the year. You can read that letter here, and for more information about the conditions endured by the 50 million other turkeys who will be killed this Thanksgiving season, click here.

“Try being an animal at slaughter before you say they are “just” an animal!” You can go ahead with your thought. Let us know the results. Oh wait you won’t be able to.

Dana Tell that to the big cats.

Were those turkeys drugged or were they pets? They were not raised on a turkey farmthey had all thier feathers. I would like to know the politics behind whose turkeys get to be saved each year. In any event the whole thing is a sham. How could anyone even look at a live turkey and then head to their table and eat one? Thank goodness some of us are still evolving. It would be sad if the survival of the human race depended on a rifle and a dead bird on other animal on their plates. .

  • Susannah S says:

Turkeys feel the same fear the same pain the same will to live as any other living being. I wouldn’t eat a turkey any more than I’d eat my canine companions for dinner. My only regret is that there once was a time when I did eat turkey and all the other “farmed animal” meats. No one could pay me to eat them now that I know the suffering they endure. Today Thanksgiving I’m thankful for all the people here who have given up participating in the annual turkey slaughter. Enjoy your tofurkey your tofupumpkin cheesecake and all the other veganvegetarian delicacies that are so delicious. I’m bringing a tofutoffutti pumpkin cheescake to my inlaws they can have it with their dead carcass and at least not contribute to the veal industry by having a pie full of dairy products. I can’t stand the gluttony that this day represents but I am thankful for so many things among them my veganism and my animal friends as well as my friends who love animals.

HONORABLE? ROFLMAO! Yeah ionorable for being the worst.

  • Mars says:

So it’s better for the turkeys to become extinct?

  • court says:

He’s not going to reply he’s a dumbass and doesn’t care about anything in this world.. that’s why the war is not over and he only does stuff like “pardon” turkeys because it’s what all the other presidents did. He’s stupid and a money addict that’s all he is.

  • stoptorture says:

“They are just turkeys…” This is like saying someone with a really low IQ is just a retard or brain damaged and so go ahead and do something awful to them because they can’t comprehend anything which has actually been done. Well they still feel the pain. Try being an animal at slaughter before you say they are “just” an animal!

  • stoptorture says:

We need to make sure that the next president is not some heartless animal killer. A bunch of the candidates enjoy hunting ie causing great suffering and murder to weaker beings for a sadistic depraved enjoyment. As long as someone like that gets in the whitehouse there won’t be a change. It would be like electing a cruel slaveowner and then wanting him to free the slaves and care about them. Peta should inform the public on what candidates are better or worse for animals and blacklist the hunters.

The only right way to do a “Turkey Pardon” is not to eat them at all!!! I must add that the turkey in I am an animal documentary that got away and was rescued and then sent to a sanctuary touched me deeply. I dont know after looking in that turkeys eyes anyone could ever eat one again. The are sweet and innocent creatures that like all animals I believe have souls feel pain and do not want to die for our consumption. There once was a time in my life I would have never imagined a Thanksgiving without a turkey for dinner..but now I can not imagine a Thanksgiving eating something that suffered so dearly just for me to follow a tradition. I am most thankful this year for all of the people that have opened their eyes this year by stopping to contributing to the suffering of animals by consuming meat products. I am also thankful for all of the people that are doing everything possible to help animals in need. No matter how little or much you do to make an animals life better! I feel blessed to live in a world that is now aware of the suffering of animals and where people are making a difference everywhere. I also greatly appreciate Peta for they are the organization that paved the road for all animal rights groups around the world without them animals would still be viewed as just objects for us to own and abuse. I look forward to the day that all turkey’s and other animals are pardoned simply by the fact that people refuse to eat them!

Hey lol it’s exactly this ‘they are just turkeys’ mentality which is leading this planet stright away into hell! read the works of Nobel Prize Winner Albert Schweitzer the Doctor of Lambarene! He is talking exactly about this problem ‘they are just moskitos’ and can be exterminated ‘they are just rats’ and can be exterminated ‘they are just snakes’ and can be exterminated they are just unwanted humans’ and can be exterminated! He writes in this case i prefer to close my window and breath a sticky air in order to avoid the death of one moskito or moth or fly approaching my lamp! etc. but uneducated illiterate people are fucking up here always with the same argumentations without using their godgiven brains or making a small step towards education of soul heart and mind just guided by their paranoia and you know where is the tip of the iceberg exactly there where we see the abuse of the human species like for example now in saudi arabia where the whole world is horrified in looking at a human being abused terrorized beaten and thrown away because she is ‘just a woman’! if you don’t get it once and for always that all life is connected and related and linked with each other that we are all one creation taking breath from the one who gave it to us for free the creator and that everything is HIS PERSONAL PROPERTY and that this CREATOR created time and that we have no power over it but just the creator and that this creator is free to go back and forth within his own created time and give and take and wake up whatever this creator likes at any time this creator likes the human being shall never overcome never! animalfriend FREE BURMA AND THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!

It’s an interesting ritual at least two turkeys survive the holidays! besides the ones we won’t eat.

they are just turkeys come on

The animals do not die of boredom. They die because of all of the chemicals and crap that gets pumped into their bodies making them unnaturally huge and misproportioned. Their lil systems cannot sustain the amount of weight that they are carrying around and they die.

    Help the turkeys!!!

  • mark miller says:

The only reason he pardoned the poor turkey is because oter presidents havecome on now the guy use to own a cattle ranch someone told me he even loved watching them being castrated. the guy is sick

  • Michelle Martin says:

I know we’ve got to keep trying but this guy cares nothing for people let alone animals. He has sent thousands of young men and women to Iraq to die in vain. I hate to say that there will be no reponse to this letter. Our only option is to GET OUT and VOTE. We’ve got to get rid of politicians with no consciences and no cares for anything except money. Bush is morally bankrupt.

  • animalfriend says:

what else would you expect from a president who’s spokesperson has just one word ‘astonishing’ for a human female victim violated by seven men and punished by saudi law with 200 lashes and six months in prison! there are small monsters like some antibloggers up here but there are also big monsters in many high places until doomsday swallows them alive!

  • Carla says:

Wonderful letter!! Lets hope he makes that compassionate decision to spare at least these two birds futher dismay!

  • Susannah S says:

I never understood that stupid hypocritical ceremony and I never will. To “pardon” a turkey implies that its done something wrong to begin with when all it did was have the misfortune to be a turkey at this time of year.

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

Judith Not everything in the world has to be compassionate

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

This idiot doesn’t give a damn about any animals in this world. More farm animals have died during this administration than any before him. The monster he chose for the USDA turns his back at compassionate killing. By the way compassionate killing means nothing to me it’s still killing. These bastards should be hung like that poor old sow was. Bastards all of them…..

  • Canaduck says:

The cutesy “pardoning” of two birds out of the millions who will die this Thanksgiving makes me want to puke. it’s even worse when I hear that the pardoned birds tend to end up dying from neglect and probably boredom within a year.

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

Whats the point if he doesnt know his head from his ass? His puny “brain” cant even comprehend the simple letter!

  • Jo Smith says:

    Poor turkeys!
