A Pig Walks Into a Hot-Dog–Eating Contest …

Written by PETA | July 5, 2011

… and becomes the star attraction. PETA’s pig was present for this year’s Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Brooklyn on the Fourth of July, and the pig’s able assistants handed out hundreds of “Think Before You Eat” leaflets in order to educate people about the abuse—such as castration, tooth-clipping, and tail-docking without any anesthetics—suffered by pigs and other animals killed for hot dogs.

You can be a champ for pigs by forgoing frankfurters and choosing faux footlongs instead.

Um… Jull… I’m referring to the photo, which also validates my comments about PETA and idiotic rantings. Protesting does no good if no one is looking – and AFTER the fact doesn’t count.

YoungGuru, as a common sense person I can say you’re not a health professional. You can be on those three things and be a vegetarian – family history can make someone who is a vegan diabetic and have heart issues and those who are omnivores live to 110. Yes, GENES as well as diet and exercise factor in. ANY resident or non-medical professional knows that. Stop being idiotic with these comments PETA posters… please.

  • YoungGuru says:

lol Rory..yeah the “nutritious” thing that is meat. As a medical professional I can say enjoy being on plavix, blood thinners, possibly insulin, etc. for the last 20 years of your life!

  • Jull says:

    Fred you looked lol

  • scienceguy says:

Understand the sentiment all around, but given that hotdogs are made from beef, not pork.

It is good that PETA was a presence at this awful event, although I agree it is too easy to look away from some big fuzzy sugar-coated image of a pig.   Perhaps it touched the hearts of a few children which is a good thing.  However I think the shocking truth might turn of few more heads.  A while back someone did a demonstration of pager mache pigs, that looked like real pigs in what looked like real gestation crates.  We need that in NY.  Apparently our mayor think it’s a good PR Op to be photographed shoveling some poor dead tortured pig in his face.  I am discusted by that.   I am discusted by all the NUMB NUTS so called leaders that are just a bunch of HEARTLESS  ******.  And steal traps are legal in this country as well.  WHO THE **** DO “PEOPLE” THINK THEY ARE, that they have the right to do this to other creatures that inhabit this planet.  By God, really? What a delusion!

I own 11 potbellied Pigs and have raised them in my home since birth .I have seen what damage is done to them .How humans even with the best education .Table scrap feed them they end up in sheltors .And they become 200 lbs to big.I know that pigs are my dearest hearted animal .I am trying to put something together for a Tv show.If people only knew how much they were like us they wouldn’t be eating them!I have rescued them as well.I can imajine how they get treated on Farms.I couldn’t go and see.Knowing what I just may do!Proud to be a Veggie They will never call this event offit makes to much money and sad to say people wait for it for many years .Though maybe one year I could dress up one of my piggy’s and we could stop by .They all do tricks though I wouldn’t want them to smell that !

I find it immensely funny NO ONE IS LOOKING there PETA. It’s like one of those “Hey, let’s put up a sign that says something and look like a fool.” Hey, I’m against the gluttony contests, but seriously, this photo does nothing except make you guys look like idiots. At least have SOMEONE looking besides the cameraperson.

I’m with Veggiegirl (well who couldn’t be, facts are facts and animal by-products are PROVEN poisonous to our bodies) and Tiffanyy…fabulous girl, this has actually inspired me to get more active in my locality.

  • VeggieGirl says:

I dont think this is ridiculous at all. But what is ridiculous is people having a hot dog eating contest. As if putting one hot dog in your body is bad enough. They don’t even know what their eating! “A hot dog is a processed meat that is generally high in unhealthy saturated fat and sodium and contains nitrites, which may be cancer causing,” says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD. I support this 100%. 🙂

  • RoryReloaded says:

This is beyond ridiculous. Ruining some harmless fun by getting some guy to dress as a swine and hand out false pamphlets boycotting the nutritious thing that is meat.

  • sb says:

This comment has nothing to do w/the eating contest but I didn’t know where else to ask this question….on yahoo news there is an article about another “athelete” aquires a rare exotic animal for a pet…….these people are buying tigers/camels/monkeys etc…as pets locked up in cages…they are not rescue animals…..why aren’t there anyone voiceing an opinion and calling them out????

  • Tiffanyy says:

I would LOVE to stand out there in a pig costume or a cow costume and hold up that kind of sign.
