Petland Calculus

Written by PETA | November 12, 2007

I have to admit that I don’t have a very good head for figures, but the math here seems pretty straightforward. And while we’re talking numbers, selling people dogs and cats when there are between 6 and 8 million waiting for homes in shelters every year is about as dumb as shelling out a thousand dollars for an animal at Petland when you could be rescuing one of the 3 to 4 million who will be euthanized this year for lack of a good home.

These pics are from Friday’s demonstration outside an Orlando Petland where we debuted our new “Priceless” ads, which make a simple but effective point to potential pet store customers.

Hi.You say never buy adopt.Because pound pups will die. That is truebut if you only adopt dogs the dogs in stores will die.

  • Tanya says:

Sadly if people continue to breed for “perfection” they will continue to increase the number of recessive lethals present in “purebred” dogs slowly killing off the bred. Sad enough without the prospect of millions of euthanized shelter dogs. I’ll keep my pound puppies thank you very much! They may not win any AKC shows but they love me just the same.

I understand where all of you guys are coming from with the whole puppy mill thing really I do. I am an animal lover times ten and have been my entire life. I just wish people would stop making crazy accusations that EVERY petland in the US gets puppies from mills. It’s not true. I would have thought the same thing with all this slander on the web about them. You guys are forgetting that all petlands are individually owned…the only real tie a petland has to another is that they pay for the franchise name. that’s it. I work at a petland where pets are first and if you don’t agree you’re fired. The puppies are inspected three times before being made availible and we offer three warranties with them. Health cold Parasite all at our cost if there is an issue. as well as a congenital health warranty for three years. why would we spend our money paying for any issues if we knew theyd get them due to a mill? we wouldnt! you say petland is in the business of money right?? well it’s saving us money to get the puppies from the right place and not having to deal with tons of vet bills. I know there are shady people in the world there just are there’s no way around it. BUt honestly you can’t group every petland together… They have freedom to buy and sell what from where how they want to. It’s sad but true. I don’t doubt that maybe there are petlands that do get mill puppies. All I ask is that you don’t slander all petlands.. UNderstand they hardly have anything to do with one another.

I hope that now that they have a definite PetlandPuppyMill connection they’ll be able to locate and shut down the suppliers of these puppies. Anyone who is thinking of getting a dog please visit a Humane Society or other Animal Control facility in your community. There are so many loving pets waiting for someone to give them a good home.

I bought a ferret from Petland located at 8800 W. Charleston Blvd. Suite 3Las Vegas NV 891177029497387 because he was on sale. He was absolutely beautiful although a little bit lethargic. They waved this full warranty crap in front of my face and me like an idiot I believed them.We left Petland and took him directly to the Vet where we spent an additional $50 having all the tests run for parasites and so on. I woke up the next morning and he was DEAD. We called Petland they said bring him in and they would make it right. When we got there it was a completely different story. They refused to exchange it for another Ferret. They refused to give us our money back. And then they told us to have the Ferret autopsied and theyre vet at our expense. More than $200. The vet wouldn’t autopsy him because he had been dead more than 12 hours. Petland told us we were screwed and if we wanted our money back to take them to court. We didn’t even have the ferret for 24 hours. He was a birthday gift and holding a dead ferret for my birthday was NOT my idea of a good time. I was hysterical they told us they would take care of us then they called security to usher us out of the store. Our entire experience was heartbreaking. Their warranty is not worth the paper it was written on. I urge everyone to stay far far away from this store at 8800 W. Charleston Blvd.Suite 3 Las Vegas NV 89117 7029497387.

Love it. I’ve been a PETA member for a long time and I would love to boycott my local Petland in Ft. Myers FL. Their tv ads are nauseating. Good job!

Hey Cochran Do you want to talk about “slipping”? What about a M.D.? who is supposed be dedicated to his patients and his career and continuous education that babbles with all kinds of silly nonsense on an ANIMAL RIGHTS’ blog site? How about the same MD? claiming he’s going all over the country for the purpose of joykilling? When do you have the time to slip in your “patients”? And what makes you think that you haven’t slipped from upholding the standards and honorary title of “M.D.”?

Hey I thought all the puppy mills were in the Midwest. Why hasn’t peta commented on the latest mill in it’s home state of Virginia? Seems like you guys would be right on top of it. Why are the dogs going to NY? They drove over 1100 miles to get these dogs and they were in peta’s back yard all the time. You guys are slipping.

Petland also has a LONG BAD history of selling sick and genetically defective puppies. Loads of consumer complaints! Every single puppy sold at Petland in every Petland store comes from a puppy mill! Every single one no matter what lies they tell about “local breeders” or other garbage. It is ALL LIES. All the Petland stores get their puppies from puppy mills and some of the worst out there both domestic and foreign. Some are getting imported puppy mill puppies from horrible mills in places like Hungary! thanks to Hunte Corporation Because of the heightened awareness about puppy mills some Petland franchise owners have resorted to lying or telling false stories. But don’t be fooled! The Petland puppies are all from puppy mills and when people buy them they are giving money to animal abusers and enabling them to abuse even more. When we all stop buying from pet stores and websites and classifieds the puppy mills will close!!!!! Please spread the word to your friends and relatives. Guess who wants to go into business with Petland? The AKC!! The AKC makes most of its income from registering puppy mill puppies but they need MORE MORE MORE money for those dog shows and huge salaries other foolishness. The board of directors of the AKC voted to go into business with Petland and register their puppy mill puppies so the AKC could cash in even more. It got put off for now but word is that the AKC really wants to do this because they spend so much money that they need to profit from the puppy mills. As it is the AKC has had a business deal for years with Hunte Corporation the biggest and most notorious puppy mill broker in the U.S. based in Missouri the puppy mill state. The AKC makes eighty percent of its income from puppy mill blood money which is why you see all those breed clubs and “reputable breeders” and “show dog people” and their ilk lobbying FOR the mills and against rules and regulations and inspections. The puppy mills pay for the vanities of the purebred dog fancy or hobby.

AWESOME signs! Can you all start to put a little more effort into the PetsCrap…I mean PetsMart…campaign?? There are still birds hamsters guinea pigs rabbits all small furries lizards snakes etc. SUFFERING for a buck. Please don’t give up or overlook them. Dogs and cats are easy. It’s more difficult to convince people that these little guys are sentient beings too. They suffer as much as those cute little doggies and kitties. Can we see some movement on the PetsMart thing…now?? I’m also hoping and praying you don’t sell those animals out like you did to Petco. Sorry but I’m still not happy with that decision.

  • kitty says:

Awesome posters!! They really get the word out!

  • Carla says:

Brilliant!! I guess we can’t target every single pet store in the world not enough good hands to hold up the signs but this demo is very encouraging!! You don’t have to say no more!
