PETA’s Human BBQ Demo Becomes All Too Real

Written by PETA | October 7, 2008

By now, you might have heard about Timothy Wayne Shepherd, the 28-year-old man who confessed last year to killing his ex-girlfriend and who is also charged with dismembering and barbecuing her—no, really.

While this story is shocking and terrible, it sounds awfully familiar. Oh, that’s right! Last week on the PETA Files, we posted an entry all about barbecuing humans! It was a demonstration to get people to wake up and “meet their meat.” In our demo, a woman had her body painted like charred flesh and lay on a mock grill while passersby gawked—forced to make the connection that those tightly wrapped, clean-looking meat packages in the grocery store once were living, breathing beings who felt pain when they were slaughtered.

In our case, the demo was thought-provoking and symbolic (flesh is flesh). In Timothy’s case … it might have been a bit too real.

We’re writing to the prison where Shepherd is being held. If he is convicted of the murder, he will receive a sentence presumably intended to prevent him from taking any more lives. Well, we certainly agree with this sentiment—and that’s why we’re asking Shepherd’s jailers to stop the cycle of senseless killing by putting him on an all-vegetarian diet. We can never bring back the young woman who was the victim of Shepherd’s crime, but we can try to prevent him from causing any more painful deaths.

Anna Anna So because they are human excuses them for their crime? They need to be punished and I firmly believe in “an eyeforeneye”. To have them sit in the corner and think about what they did just lets future murderers think that’s all the punishment they will have to endure.

Thank you Amanda. I really appreciate it. Have a great weekend. Lynda

Panic Though we can tear meat with them naming our teeth ‘canine’ has more to do with their position in our mouths than any similarity to the canines in wolves and other carnivores or bears who are omnivoreswho have long pointed canines to stab and rip flesh. Males horses too have canines. But they’re herbivores. Their canines are used for fighting. Having human’canines’ doesn’t show that we need an omnivorous diet.

  • Maria Isabel says:

Panic the difference between humans and wolves is that wolves HAVE to hunt smaller animals and feed on their flesh to survive. Humans do not. We can stop the harm the meat industry causes. We have four canine teeth and twentysix flat teeth. That ratio should tell you something. Plus we may naturally have canine teeth but we also naturally have compassion and we plan to use that compassion nature has given us. Meat is needless and the suffering is needless and knowlingly causing needless suffering only for the sake of your tastebuds is just plain selfish.

  • vegancoin says:

“vegancoin I do not think that you answered Johnna ?” Wrong. i pointed out the several obvious flaws with the paperthin propaganda that she was trying to spread here. And those childish statements cried out for correction your hypocritical viewpoints seem equally flawed. Nobody is trying to force anything upon anybody again a basic misrepresentation. “But the meat industry DOES hurt. It hurts many different animals including human ones and it destroys the planet.” Good points Maria the damage that the meat industry causes not only to animals but to the planet as well should not be ignored.

  • Alberta says:

If you do not feel sorrow for the animals being killed then so people will not fill sorrow for people being killed.

  • Alberta says:

You get the same nutrients with vegetables and vitamins without eating meat.

  • Panic says:

look I’m all for the dont kill for fur thing i really am BUT not eating meat is nonsense to me. you ppl dont protect rabbits from wolfs in fact you respect the wolf as much as the rabbit my point isIt’s natural to eat meat humans grow canine teeths therefor we need an omnivorus diet…

  • Maria says:

SED it’s true that we should allow other people to do as they please as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. But the meat industry DOES hurt. It hurts many different animals including human ones and it destroys the planet. So you could use your own argument against the meateaters that they are forcing things on others. And these “others” are the billions of animals they kill every year. I’ll go ahead and respond to Johnna. Meat is not convenient. Even if it was it’s no excuse for murder. People ARE going to stop killing animals for food. the ten million vegns in the United States already have. Cows pigs and chickens wouldn’t eat us since they’re all vegetarians. So that argument is extremely weak.

  • SED says:

vegancoin I do not think that you answered Johnna ?. You just expressed your own opinion. Nothing more nothing less. And are you not just trying to Force your ways on others. Should we just not Love all people and be happy for them and be happy with our own lives? I am sure that you do not like it when someone Forces changes on you.

  • Jeremy says:

Please have mercy! I posted the wry shallow comment that appears ABOVE my name not the religious rant below it this was posted by Robin Lynn!

  • vegancoin says:

“So whats the point? Please answer me this.” First off your “nature is red of tooth and claw” argument is crass is defective and misses the point. Second the point is one can get an adequate and nutritious diet from eating a plant based diet. And third but most importantly you are willfully ignoring the unspeakeable atrocities horrors brutality and violence of mass industrialized factory farming. This is an abomination and needs to stop.

  • Sandy says:

Johnna Not for nothing but are you aware that you just posted your comments on a animal rights site???????? Just a fair warning you ahve just opened a can of worms my friend! I would say something in regards to what you just said but I just know that you are going to get lots of responses to what you said so I will just leave that one alone….I don’t have the energy at the moment.

  • Johnna says:

OK. Heres the way i think of this whole vegitarian thing. Meat is one of the most conveniant things to buy for food. People arent going to stop killing animals for food so you may as well eat it or it goes to waste. Some animals would eat us if they had the chance. So whats the point? Please answer me this.

  • Christa says:

JEREMY I am a vegan and a Christian and I believe that God desires mercy and not sacrifice Hosea 66. Jesus himself said “Blessed are the merciful…” in Matthew 5. In Numbers 222334 God’s angel rebukes a man named Balaam for beating his donkey. In the beginning God declared that our food is to be from “…every herb that yields seed…and every tree whose fruit yields seed…” meaning that we were not created to slaughter animals and eat their flesh Genesis129. People did not eat meat in God’s plan but God chose to allow people to have free will. God does not want people to mindlessly follow Him like zombies. He wants us to have a choice. People are the ones who screwed up the order and balance of things through disobedience. When Christ returns to earth and makes it new the prophet Isaiah tells us that there will be no hurt or destruction in all of God’s holy mountain for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord Isaiah 119. Proverbs 1210 says that a righteous person regards the life of his animal. Yes God placed us in dominion but He meant for us to be good stewards of the earth helping it to thrive not destroying it like people have unfortunately chosen to do. As for God allowing Jesus to be brutally murdered Jesus chose this. He is God. He did this because He loves us UNCONDITIONALLY. I can tell Jeremy that you love animals wouldn’t you give whatever it took to save them or to save a person whom you love? This is what Jesus did FOR YOU! He loves you that much. “See I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands…Isaiah 4916. He will punish evil in His time and trust me trust God those who continue to commit such evil acts and do not repent not just saying “Oh I’m sorry” and then doing it again but a true 180 degree turn around from sin will get what they deserve for causing the suffering of both humans and animals. “…be sure your sin will find you out.” Numbers 3223. While it breaks God’s heart to see anyone go to hell He does freely offer the gift of paradise. Some people are just unwilling to accept it. “He God does not preserve the life of the wicked but gives justice to the oppressed.” Job 366. The righteous cry out and the Lord hears…The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart…” Psalm 341718. THANK YOU to all of you who “do justice to the afflicted and needy…and…free them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 8234. “To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable the Lord than sacrifice.” Proverbs 213. “Open your mouth for the speechless for the cause of all who are appointed to die Proverbs 318.” ” …and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”Revelation 717 In Matthew 2540 Jesus says “…as you did it to one of the least of these you did it to Me.”

He should not be allowed to continue on a veggie diet but rather a vegan or fruititarian diet. And in response to Jeremy I happen to take offence. God DOES care!!! He will judge these people in the end. There will be justice He will make sure of it. Simply because He does not swoop in with His angels right NOW NOW NOW as we would prefer does not mean is a mean. apathetic or uncaring God.

  • Robin Lynn says:

Here’s the irony! Hopefully Timothy Wayne Sheherd will get the death penalty and go to Hell. But when he meets his maker God what will his crime be before him if he eats animals in jail. Nothing. Why. If anyone ha sever read the bible or knows anything about God who were allegedly created in his image that entity started all of this by putting animals on this earth for our pleasure and for our food source. Look how many sacrificial lambs God asked Biblical people to slaughter to prove they loved God. What kind of God creates an animal makes it as close to humans as possible then allows this to happen. So you see unfortunately ther ewill be no punishment here. As for killing a human the best comparison I can make is that the same God allowed his own son to be brutally murdered so the plea Timothy can cop to God is that I’m created in your image don’t be a hippocrit and punish me for being like you. Who knows it may work. Overall as long as God set up this sick scenario the way he did in regard to animals the fight to turn people away from neglect and cruelty will be a losing battle. Just look at how many children are vicitmed each year and little is done about that especially in childrens court and these are humans so why doe sit surprise and shock anyone what happens to animals and little is done there. Unfortunately the world we live in was set up long ago by an inhumane God that could care less what happens to anyone in it. So GOOD LUCK PETA and anyone on behalf of any innocent creature and human you have quite a battle ahead. And may you WIN.

  • Jeremy says:

Timothy Wayne Shepherd. “Shepherd”? An appropriate name I think. After all isn’t this what shepherds ultimately do to the very beings they care for? Kill and eat them?

  • SASHA says:

To Anna I didn’t mean to upset you I was just thinking about the young lady he had killed. And her family that will never see her again. Let’s just say I’m glad he is locked up. I think we can both agree on that.

  • ANna says:

In response to SASHA and mikemeyer i think that it is terrible that you belive that murderers should be treated like that. Yes I agree that they have commited a terrible crime snd should be punished. but by treating them that way we are being complete hipocrites and not being much of agood influence. First of all we are just doing what the murdere has done! Two wrong dont make a right. And come on they are human!

  • Curtis says:

I just heard on Fox News that a U.K. chef has slit his boyfriends’ throat and marinated his chopped flesh after having a sexual encounter with him. They said he chewed a piece of the victims seasoned flesh before disposing of it in the kitchen trash. Human AND animal flesh is gross.

  • yf says:

I feel.. meat.. at the end of the day.. is still meat.. derived from or off some once living and breathing form.. human.. animal fish or game.. all the same really.. isn’t it?

  • mikeymeyer says:

omg yes!!! every murderer sould be forces to eat dirt and potatoes and forces to wash it down with their own feces!

  • SASHA says:

I don’t think he should be allowed to eat anything! May he rot in jail.

  • Aine says:

I think that the idea of putting Timothy Wayne Shepherd on an all vege diet is a great idea to be totally honest I think anyone who has killed should nt be allowed kill again I think all murderers should go vege
