PETA’s Bullhorn vs. Ringling’s Bullhooks

Written by PETA | August 13, 2010

Mobilized by PETA’s Action Team, more than 200 people descended on the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, last night to let Ringling Bros. know that its elephant-abusing act isn’t welcome.

Oakland Ringing Demo

The highlight of the evening came when protestors chanted, “There’s no excuse for animal abuse—boycott Ringling circus,” so loudly that they drowned out a Ringling promoter. At the time, the promoter was talking about Baby Barack—probably in a shameless attempt to hawk show tickets. Even after turning up the volume on his amplified microphone, the promoter was still overpowered and had no choice but to pack up his gear and leave!

PETA isn’t alone in opposing Ringling, which allows its trainers to beat elephants with sharp, metal-tipped bullhooks to force the animals to perform; tears baby elephants away from their mothers; and keeps these smart, social animals in chains. In a historic partnership, four Northern California animal protection groups—the Marin Humane Society, East Bay SPCA, Humane Society Silicon Valley, and the Sacramento SPCA—have joined forces to ask everyone to boycott Ringling in response to its cruelty. We can take action, too, by asking officials to seize Ringling’s abused elephants and by urging everyone we know to attend only animal-free circuses.

When I was little I used to beg my mom to let me go to the Ringling Bros circus and see the big nice elephants. At that point I had no idea the elephants were forced to be’nice’. I never understood the story on the news about the elephant ‘rebelling’ against the Ringling Brothers but after catching a glimpse of the crulety the elephants had to undergo I thought to myself ‘Wouldn’t you fight back too?’ Thank you guys sooooooooooooooooo much for helping these gentle giants. They deserve to live out long happy lives. And that doesn’t include being treated like something out of the trash. If anyone from any media scource is reading this shame on you. How could you not cover this? People deserve to know the truth

It was great to have so many people at the protest! It made an impact on the circus goers to see the great numbers of protestors with signs showing the horrific animal abuse behind the scenes of the circus. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK PETA!

I was there the opening night at the Oracle in Oakland Aug. 11th. This was my first time. After viewing Peta’s and Youtube’s video footage of the cruelest training on an animal I have ever seen. I was amazed at how many people came out to protest and yet amazed that there was not one media source covering this event. There were more protesters at the circus than any of the tea parties with about 25 people babbling incoherent false spew. Peta demand more media coverage. Most of the people I spoke to would not have bought tickets if they heard about this torture to the elephants sooner. Thank you Peta for all that you do for animal rights.
