PETA at the Vick Hearing

Written by PETA | November 28, 2007

Although the media are focusing their attention on other issues now that the furor over the Michael Vick case has died down for the time being, the horrors of dogfighting are just as present as they ever were—and there is still a long, uphill battle ahead for the animal protection community as we work to stamp out this cruel blood sport forever. Yesterday, at a hearing in Virginia to determine a trial date for Vick and his codefendants, PETA members gathered to remind the public that all dogfighters need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and that all dogs deserve justice—not just the ones who happen to be abused by famous football players.

It confuses me why people with a very limited understanding still persist to comment PETA do fantastic work this isn’t about making any species extinct and anyone organising fights wether they are white black pink or orange should go to jail and dog fighting needs to be banned! It really is that simple

  • Danielle says:

Thank you for fighting aganist dog fighting. People like y’all really make a difference. I really wish he would have gotten a long sentence…..like life.

  • CarolAnne says:

Thank God for Peta You all do such a wonderful job Thank You

  • emil solderitsch says:

michael vick is one sick bastard. he needs to feel the same pain he put those dogs through.i wish the maximum sentence for this poor excuse of human life.i hpoe someone in prison makes a name for himself and puts this sob out of his misery.

  • Melody Carothers says:

Having owned an American Bull Terrier for two years now one positive I have seen come out of this horror is changing the public attitude towards this breed. My dog was horribly abused we were able to intervene as it was happening. She was only about 2 mo old when it occured she still suffers a terrible distrust for all men it causes both the dog my husband who is a real dog lover a lot of painI have really enjoyed the pictures of Vicks’ dogs being retrained socialized!

  • Victoria Stokes says:

I am eight years old. I wanted to say that everyone should stop treating dogs that way and start loving them. They need to think about what they’re doing before they treat a dog like that. Michael Vick needs to learn respect about dogs. He might need lessons. My pitt bull is very nice and loves me. Her name is Lucky Lou.

  • Lisa Stokes says:

I read through most of the comments and the one that stood out the most was the one written by nunya. I was very unimpressed with that person’s ability to turn a dog fighting ring into a racist remark. I recently rescued a pitt bull that had been starved to the point of death. It is the best dog I’ve ever had. Even with the most terrible of situations she found it within her heart to love man again and to give us a second chance. I wish more people were like these dogs. For a person that is screaming racism and money to us and to on the same hand discrimate theirself against a breed that they obviously know nothing about is irony. Nunya noone owes you nor your race anything. We are all human beings with a responsibility. Michael Vick should be prosecuted as should anyone regardless of color that fights innocent dogs. Nunya may God show mercy on your soul. Judge not lest ye be judged!

  • Hmiller says:

I’ve been a dog trainer for 13 years and I have worked with many pitbulls. They are an amazing breed very smart and loveable but most of all loyal. These dogs are not born fighters they have to be trained that way and think about it any breed can be aggressive I’ve also been a veterinary tech. for 12 years and there are many breeds that have to be muzzled just to approach them. I think Vick deserves to feel the pain and torture that he did to those dogs. Hopefully one day that will be the new law you hurt a animal and the same thing has to happen to you.

  • james ramey says:

i think all people who fight dog’s should be put in a ring and let the dog fight them people like michael vick’s give’s pit’s bad name’s it an’t the dog’s fault it was trained and told to do it i have pit’s of my own 7 pretty pit’s and they all get along fine i get tired of hearing just wait one day they will turn on u or each other bull i got one i’ve had for 8 years he stay’s in the house and sleep’s in our bed with me and my wife i love all animal’s not just pit’s but pit’s get the bad end of the deal they say they r going to try band pit’s in virgina i will move they r like my kids i’ll let any body come around while they r eating or anything if they bite then they can have them my dog’s was trained bye talking not beating just saying no stop don’t quit. go to http://www.pitbullspace.com and check it out thank’s james ramey

  • austin says:

first of all who do any of you think you are to say that we should make extinct an entire breed of dog. that is not our decision to make espesially a breed as loving as the american pit bull terrier. not only are you lost my friend you believe you know anything about war! i am a veteran of iraq and afghanistan. the look on these innocent faces when they finally realized we freed them from the tyranny of a corrupt government and terrorism to let them live their lives as they please. and not only that they have begun to help us to clear these unwanted entities. and when i got home it wasnt the bickering about the war that helped me recover from my PTSD it was my american pit bull terrier anna who’s only goal in life is to make me happy. so god have mercy on ANYBODY who tries to take my anna from me. cause i sure the hell wont.

  • mike says:

Nunya You wrote this is all about race and PETA would not persue anything on a rich white person. let me ask you is Calvin Klien rich and white? Is the head of Burberry rich and white? How about the CEO of Butterball quit trying to take this as a race issue you can’t pull the race card every time a black man does a terrible thing your comment show you know nothing of PETA and obviously nothing about the country you are living in.

  • Susan says:

To JHAVARD I understand what you are saying. but can I ask you why do you hunt? Do you hunt to feed yourself or hunt for pure enjoyment? I do not see the point in shooting an animal such as a bear and leave it to rot where you shot it. When shooting an animal you also have to take into account whether it is breeding season and if they have young so when you shoot an animal you will also end up killing the young who will not survive without their mother if they are still feeding them so the whole family will die one by being shot the others from starvation. The worst thing I can think of is CANNED LION shooting in South Africa where by people from all around the world pay THOUSANDS of dollarspounds to kill a lion in an enclosed environment. What is the purpose of this? Perhaps you can enlighten me. Do people do it for the fun of it or because they want to feel courageous though anybody can put a bullet in an animal which has no chance of escaping and I personally detest this type of arranged premeditated shooting of such a beautiful creature as the lion. It is disgusting. Fair enough if your life was in danger but to shoot an animal for NO REASON whatso ever is pointless. Thank god though that you do support Peta with some things though. Hatred for Dog fighting and loving your pets are very good virtues.

  • jhavard says:

Knowing that PETA is against hunting and fishing and more then willing to lobby for laws against such. Puts a pet lover and Vick detester like myself in a fickle. Being I like to hunt and fish makes PETA more of a threat to my freedoms and liberties than Vick and his dog thugs. Your intolerance truly hurts your cause. Absolute intolerance has led to the demise of many organizations. Just ask the KKK. Finding commom ground could serve could serve you well.

  • Jeff Melton says:

In response to Matt Peirce How the hell do you know what PETA members or other animal rights supporters think or do about Darfur the Iraq war racism poverty or anything else? Did it ever occur to you that animal rights advocates might care about more than one thing? It’s ironic that while racists stereotype people like you you turn right around and stereotype people yourself. And consider the wellbeing of dogs relatively unimportant because they’re not human too! The logic is exactly the same as that of people who consider a person of color’s wellbeing unimportant because of the color of their skin.

  • Susan says:

Jen Wang you are spot on. I agree with what you have just written. Animals do have feelings such as loyalty love sad lonely and even feel depressed. This issue is nothing to do with RACE it is all to do with the disgusting cruelty that this man no matter who he was or what colour religion or part of the world he came frominflicted on the animals in his care. He betrayed all the animals in his care taught them to be aggressive from an early age. All of those dogs could of had a better life and shown love decency and human kindness. DOG FIGHTING is barbaric and needs to be eradicated.

  • Susan says:

Why is it that people get on their high horse about cruelty to animals. They start accusing people of not caring about humans but only caring about animals. It really annoys me. Deliberate cruelty to animals is sick and a cowardly act because animals are in the mercy of humans and humans can chose what ever they like to do with animals. Another thing that annoys me is when some people say Oh animals are stupid or they dont feel pain. Of course they feel PAIN and they are not stupid the only one stupid is the human that says animals are stupid. obviously they have never taken the time to get to know their pets very well.

  • Jen Wang says:

To Matt What are you the priority police? If there are more important things to be concerned about then why are you spending SOOO much time on the PETA website? And FYI statistically people who dedicate their time to one organization are more likely to contribute or donate their time to other organizations as well. Why dont you get out there and do some good instead of criticizing those of us trying to make things better in the world. Get busy donate your time to Habitat for Humanity you are dong no good here. To Nunya I think you are the same idiot I responded to on Greta wire bc you mentioned Tom Brady again so I will say the same thing I said before in case you hadnt read itYou shouldnt use this forum to spew YOUR racist viewpoints. You clearly are an angry woman who hates white people. Every issue is not a racial one but you want to make it one. Here is a good test for you for the future. If the ISSUE still stands up as important when you remove race from the equation then it is not a racial issue. I dont care if the man were Tom Brady Brad Pitt or any WHITE person. I love animals. They have feelings. Dogs are amazing creatures that have rescued and rehabilitated people from simple loneliness to selfless acts of love like rescuing ALL colors of people in the 911 towers. Just so you know dogs dont care about the color of your skin they will love you no matter what color or socioeconomic background. I dont understand how you can support a person that has done such heinous things JUST because hes black. Torture electrocution drowning its wrongno matter what no matter when. As a society shouldnt we learn from our mistakes and make better choices? Stop seeing everything thorough the eyes of a separatist and see your self as a member of a larger community a member of the human race and a creature of the earth. With regards to your racial hatred you need to work on your own issues before anyone will be convinced or convicted by anything you have to say. Hatred convinces no one.

  • Matt Peirce says:

Note I did not say that Vick should not be punished. He did bad stuff and broke the law and was deceptive in court about it. He got sentenced. My argument is that while PETA is busy railing for animals Human beings are suffering this holiday season and deserve more attention than even the worst treated animals. I’m not for cruelty or mistreatment of animals I just think a lot of things are ALOT more important.

  • head hokie says:

As a longtime Virginia Tech Hokie Football fan and Atlanta Falcon fan on behalf of the Virginia Tech community the PETA organization in getting to be very “ANNOYING” when it comes down to ruining a man’s reputation. Sure Michael Vick has done wrong hurting innocent animals and needs to somewhat punished but when it comes down to hurting a man’s reputation that’s when it has crossed the line. I guarentee that at least half or most of the PETA activist supporting Vick’s punishment have killed an animal of sort whether it’s squashing an insect spider trapping a mouse or rat or even just eating the meat for dinner. Next time you talk or protest about someone killing an animal you need to remember that you too are harming innocent animals in order to be clothed or to eat.

  • Ann says:

Stay on this Vick thug. He is a dangerous violent idiot.

  • RouxTheLabChow says:

I just hope Vick has enough time to be sorry for the crime and not just sorry he got caught. Hope this teaches others that this inhumane activity is also illegal and VA does not tolerate this from anyone white red blue or purple. I would be outraged with whomever committed this crime. I also hope the exposure will reduce the of dogfighting rings and possibly save other precious animals from living lives worse than death. I thank PETA for all your MANY efforts to improve the lives of all animals. You are truly the hands feet and voice of hope for our 4 legged friends.

  • sk8punk says:

Too bad there’s no video of Vick hanging or electrocuting those dogs…maybe that would wake up all the ProVick peoplelet’s hope footage surfaces….and for those who are bringing race into this that’s just stupid. I hope they make him donate millions to animal rescue groups….

  • Tiffany says:

I have a little pit named Tasia and she is just the sweetest little girl but because of bastards like Vick she gets a bad rap. It’s people like him that give people the impression that these dogs are inheritably mean. Thank you so much for fighting for my baby and many more like her and giving pits a better name and a better future

  • Andrea says:

Nunya You sound completely unintelligent and I refuse to respond to such stupidity. Furthermore you must be a miserable person and I feel sorry for you!

  • terrie says:

  • Susan says:

This is nothing to do with RACE. This man tortured innocent dogs to their death in the most inhumane way. He needs to spend some time in prison and be made to realise the error of his evil ways. I dont care if he is a footballer or not it is irrelevent he needs to be punished for his sickening crimes. I have two dogs who are loving and good natured dogs are vicious because they are made that way by their owners ie by treating them aggressively tormenting them starving them and beating them. All cowardly acts of barbaric treatment if you were treated like that youd be vicious to other people.

  • Matt Peirce says:

I find it interesting that most of your protesters against Vick are white. I have to imagine that most of PETA’s membership is white as well. While poor predominately nonwhite in america people have more important things to worry about and the more compassionate among us have things like the Genocide in Darfur or the Iraq war to worry about PETA is little more than a snobby white social club that does little more then care for their precious pet poodles and annoy the crap out of everyone else trying to survive in this world. Well done PETA Welldone.

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

    Ashley I’m thinking IDIOT!

  • V says:

Is anyone tired of the race card yet? NUNYA the beginning of cruelty towards “black and brown people” as you said lies in humans’ cruelty to animals. violence against other beings must be stamped out before there will be peace among men.

  • Ashley says:

Nunya you are an idot for sure. how about you stop acting like everythings against black people when its not. we live in the millenium. not the friggen 60s. things have changed from then. so chill dude. chill. um anyway.. vick needs more jail timefor life loose his jobforever and never to be seen with a dog or any animal EVER again. so what do u think aobut that one? hmm? idot

  • Ariel says:

It’s quite obvious that the proVickers will fabricate any other kind of issue out of Vick’s situation rather than admit to the TRUTH and the FACTS of his heartless unconscienable criminal behavior. It’s easier for them to keep trying to cast a diversion by blaming everybody else or anything else but the person who is responsible Michael Vick! So I guess it’s fair to say that the same people are adept at concocting excuses or blaming someone else when it comes to their own wrongdoings as well. That tells of having a very weak character.

  • Kimberly says:

Way to go PETA! Don’t let those Knuckleheads off the hook no matter who they are or what they do for a living. I wonder if they are going to be such tough guys in prison.

  • Susannah S says:

Nunya Animals like children learn what they live. If you raise a pitbull to be a loving loyal member of the family then that’s what he’ll be. If you raise him by abeating him regularly bencouraging him to fight with other dogs and cnot stop the fights once they startthe way fighting pits are often raised then that’s the kind of dog you’ll have. NO dog is “naturally dangerous”. People on the other hand have often proved to be quite dangerous to themselves each other and other animals. Don’t make this a racial issue it’s not. It’s an ANIMAL issue and a question of ethics and inhumane treatment. I don’t care if it’s Michael Vick or Tom Dick or Harry Whiteass. I DO care about dogs getting hanged tormented and killed just for the hell of it. That is the issue and the ONLY issue as far as I’m concerned.

  • Caboose says:

Mike Que? R U trying to criticize? Because Im trying to be friendly unlike Mars. If youd meet me I can be very friendly u no. Silent Hill is boring too much fog and no one around. Thats why I moved to City 17 where I am engaging the Combine and I met a lovable oaf called Gordon Frohman. BTW Japanese weaponry is teh sux!

  • Onyx says:

If peta is so for animal rights why are you trying to ban a breed of animal. Peta posted about horse fighting are you going to fight to ban horses? I don’t think so. Your not 100 for all animals. If your going to claim your “people for the ethical treatment of animals” you wouldn’t fight to ban any of them! I am a proud pit bull owner and lover! If you ban pit bulls it will just be another breed for you to fight to ban in the future. Go after the cause not the breed!

  • Daylight says:

NUNYA the human being is responsible for dangerous animals never the animal itself! it’s the badtreatment by human beings which makes these dogs dangerous! are you dishonest or just unintelligent? i have two pitbulls and i grew them up since they were very small and they are very nice and joyful so stop your hateful campaign!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Caboose Most likely Japanese war surplus ?. Yeah the weather is a bit too unpredictable for most people to live in Silent Hill.

  • NUNYA says:

PETA WOULD MUCH RATHER FIGHT FOR THE LIVES OF DOGS THAN HUMAN BEINGS!!!!ESPECIALLY BLACK OR BROWN PEOPLE IF ALL DOGFIGHTERS DERSERVE TO BE PROSECUTED….WHY DO WE ONLY HEAR ABOUT VICK?? IT DOESN’T TAKE DAMN NEAR 1MIL. TO TAKE CARE OF DOGS!!!!! YOU CANNOT REHABILITATE A DOG THAT HAS BEEN TRAINED TO FIGHT SO TO SPEAK. PITBULLS ARE A NATURALLY DANGEROUS AND AGGRESSIVE BREED ANYWAY AND IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE THEM ANGRY. THE ENTIRE BREED SHOULD BE DONE AWAY WITH! THIS ORGANIZATION SHOULD BE PUT UNDER INVESTIGATION!!!! THIS ENTIRE SITUATION HAS BEEN ABOUT MONEY AND RACE AND IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. IF IT WERE TOM BRADY IN THIS SITUATION WE WOULD HAVE NEVER HEARD ABOUT IT AND YOU PETA WOULD NOT TRY TO DESTROY HIS LIFE. YOU WOULD JUST MAKE UP SOME BULL$!T EXCUSE AS TO WHY HE MADE SUCH A STUPID MISTAKE AND BE DONE WITH IT. JUST REMEMBER…IF IT WERE THE OTHER WAY AROUND THEY WOULD PROBABLY EAT YOU!!!!!LOL

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

Mike Not about artillery firearms. Its not neccesarily a bad thing though its like history. No not silent Hill but Call of Duty HalfLife Halo Battlefield 1942 etc. Yet if u meet me I am a very sane individual like other gamers. btw In Silent Hill the name of the firearm is never mentioned

  • Alan Serlin says:

Yea I have been wondering about that Pusshead. I still believe that a slap on the wrist is all these clowns will end up with !

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Caboose You don’t hunt animals at least but are very knowledgeable about guns. An interesting case study indeed. A resident of Silent Hill perhaps?

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

Ive got the justice right in my hands here……Thank u Fabrique National

  • Peace says:

Please watch the HBO Docuementary DEALING DOGS it is HORRIBLE. And this man is still dealing dogs go after some like the DRUG COMPANIES WHO ARE PAYING FOR ANIMAL CRUEALTY. This guy is in Arkansas why do you not go after him. What waste does your organization only went after Vick because it was public. Can any member tell me anything about the guy in ARKANSAS? No.

  • shawna says:

dogs are people too! why are people so cruel?

  • kelly says:

In some parts of the country it is local AUTHORITIES who are in the dog fighting business mayors merchants teachers sheriffs cops. They just won’t investigate or arrest because they are personally involved or family members are. Corruption is a big issue with dog fighting. I know an animal control officer who wanted to initiate a dog fighting ivestigation and when the local sheriff got wind of that he made a personal call warning the ACO to shut down investigation and let it go. It’s a dirty business. And then there are the “pulling dog” or “working dog” breeders. Sounds ok? Wrong. Many are breeding for fighting and they sell stock to the dog fighters under the illusion that they are running honest businesses. They’ll go on forever about how they “love” their dogs but this is cold hard cash in a very underregulated industry.

  • Carla says:

The fact of the matter is these dogs aren’t born to kill they’re forced to. I will never understand what provokes an individual to cause such useless suffering to animals. Bordem perhaps…well go try out humans for your games and leave the animals to choose theirs!

  • Tamara says:

Glad you guys haven’t forgotten this… I live in the STL metro area and guess who is in town this Sunday playing our beloved St. Louis Rams? The Atlanta Falcons! Unfortunately I will be out of town and am coming home Sunday but won’t make it home in time for the noontime game. Or I would be there wearing my “Circle Slash 7″ shirt from PETA hanging around the Falcons bench side…just as a reminder to the boys of course.

  • John Carmody says:

Well done PETA for fighting animal abuse here in Ireland our country is also rampened with dog fighting! We’re working really hard to stamp it out also. Well done again
