PETA Airs Vivisectors’ Dirty Laundry

Written by PETA | April 8, 2011

Update: Based on PETA complaints documenting abuse and neglect of animals in the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s laboratories, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has taken the rare step of fining the facility $9,143 for egregious violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act—including failing to supply veterinary care to a sheep who had been used in experimental back surgery and could not stand up, failing to supply adequate veterinary care to a goat who died on an operating table, and failing to supply post-procedural pain relief to three sheep used in experimental surgeries.

What do you do when a judge rules that your experiments on animals violated state law and you’re in jeopardy of losing government funding for the cruel project? Well, if you’re the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW), you try to hide the painful and illegal decompression experiments on sheepby disguising them as another project in order to keep the gravy train flowing. In the U.S. Navy–funded experiment, sheep were confined to high-pressure hyperbaric chambers and forced to endure crippling joint pain, seizures, nausea, paralysis, vomiting, burning, deep chest pain and in some cases, death.

PETA has obtained internal documents from UW showing that school lawyers, administration, and faculty met and discussed rewriting the project description “to avoid the legal problems that the previous study caused.”  Even though the experiment still risked killing sheep by decompression in violation of the law, members of the UW animal experimentation oversight committee considered reapproving the project and actually directed the experimenter to rewrite the description to eliminate the terms “decompression” and “death.” Other documents PETA obtained suggest that UW knew that these experiments were illegal for more than two decades. Thankfully, the project was ultimately not reapproved, and it remains on ice to this day. PETA has turned over all its findings to the special prosecutor who is considering filing charges against UW in this case.

Burn experiments on pigs at UTMB

In another ongoing case, the Texas attorney general has ordered the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) to surrender to PETA numerous documents related to experiments at the school, including studies in which Bunsen burners and hot metal rods are used to inflict third-degree burns on animals (some of whom suffered burns on up to 40 percent of their bodies). UTMB had repeatedly denied PETA the documents, trying to evade public-records laws. PETA has already filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture about the abuses and will use the documents to further expose how animals are forced to suffer in laboratories at UTMB.

You can help by sending an e-mail to UTMB’s president, asking him to investigate the school’s laboratories and dismiss employees who are abusing animals.

I agree with Virgina!!!!! It is so cruel and sickning! These poor thing are voiceless and helpless. Leave them alone!!! These kind of testings should be done to these cruel and barbaric people and not to these innocent ones!!!!!!

  • Virginia says:

This is cruel and totally unforgivable. These people should be given a taste of their own medicine and let the experiments be on them and see how they like it. Shame on them.

  • Dawn Bradford says:

    How awful!

  • Tammy Robertson says:

NO UNIVERSITY SHOULD BE DOING THIS !!! A UNIVERSITY IS FOR HIGHER LEARNING – WHERE ARE THE MORALS AND ETHICS??? THIS IS SO WRONG IT HURTS MY VERY SOUL!!! BARBARIC AND SADISTIC – HOW DO THESE PEOPLE LOOK THEMSELVES IN THE MIRROR???

  • Jill Mortimer says:

Experiments on animals are inexcusable and shocking under any circumstances. The people who conduct them must be sadists.

  • Spiderwoman says:

Hi Celia, I have an interesting news which may comfort you a little bit: concerning insulin – Banking and MacLeod were awarded a Nobel Prize for isolating insulin by extracting it from a dog. They did not discover insulin, as it had been identified and named before their experiments. Macleod admitted this (BMJ Aug. 4, 1923 p. 165-172). The use of dogs was not necessary, as human tissue was available, but the convention of the time was to use animals, so they followed it!

  • MadCity Gal says:

These tests are absolutely unnecessary. This just one more example of how humans devalue the life of other creatures. If the animal doesn’t have value, then it is appropriate to subject it to torture and death regardless of the pain the animal must endure. There are alternatives to animal testing, but the economic incentives for testing at these laboratories are too profitable to eliminate from their budgets.

My god those poor animals those wh hurt these animals should have same done to them see how they like it.its barbaric. Yae for Peta

    stop this pain in animals!!

  • Vengeance says:

Now hold on, that’s animal abuse.

  • Celia says:

Hi, I am a Type1 diabetic since the age of 8 and I have been insulin dependent the whole time. I am also a vegan. It drives me crazy that I know the drug that keeps me alive is/was tested on animals. I have looked for alternatives, but my pancreas doesn’t work at all, so I need insulin. Just curious if anyone knows of any insulin companies that don’t test on animals? I have looked and researched and I can’t find any straight answers. Thanks!

  • Ginda says:

I am horrified to hear how your school is torturing animals. There are other humane and civilized ways to conduct research. Please immediately investigate your school’s labs and fire all employees who are participating in this abuse of animals.

  • lilly4life says:

Wth?! How can people actually do this to innocent effing animals ?? Testing stuff on them I mean seriously test ur own crap on urselfs and see if it kills u or gives u any pain. I honestly hate how some humans can treat gods creatures this way =’(

  • mister jingles says:

it’s over 40 years now that i’m fighting against this criminal animal abuse! but these heart amputated freaks continue their murder on innocent animals! animal experimentation and vivisection are just leading towards wrong results and are retarding the scientific progress! but these stupid bastards don’t want to know anything about this – they just continue – and people continue dying with the same diseases. i saw my mother, my father and friends die! when one’s time is over one has to go and vivisection cannot change this! but these disgraceful animal abusers don’t get it because they don’t want to help the people but to make dirty money and make everything according to their own whims because they think that animals have no voice! but this is not true! every species has their own language and all the animals are feeling sentient beings! and it’s exactly this what they don’t understand because in their arrogance they think themselves smart and intelligent, but they are not! they are just a bunch of fallen beasts with blind eyes and deaf ears! with their attitude they shall never understand the animal kingdom and in another 40 years we shall live the same situation as today with some more deadly diseases with no solutions! so they have to stop it now or go to hell!
