PETA Asks Roger Clemens to Swear Off Drugs

Written by PETA | January 9, 2008

Earlier this morning, PETA sent a letter to Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens (the latest player to face scrutiny in the steroids scandal), urging him to prove that he is committed to being drug-free—by going vegetarian. I’ll leave it for the sports pundits to discuss whether or not Clemens ever deliberately took steroids to help with his pitching, but there’s no question that the guy has been ingesting growth-promoting drugs for as long as he’s been a meat-eater. In order to make them grow fatter faster and to ward off the disease in the filthy conditions on today’s factory farms, cows, pigs, and chickens are pumped full of growth-promoting hormones, and anyone who eats their flesh will be getting an unhealthy dose of the drugs themselves—no injections from trainers required.

As an aside, I should point out that this is by far the nicest letter that my friend and colleague Dan Shannon—who is an avid Red Sox fan—has ever written to a Yankee. You can check it out here.

CommonSenseSteve If your big concern is with the injustice experienced by the human race then why not spend your time working to make improvements to that instead of criticizing everyone trying to help animals??? I can’t focus on everything and my cause of choice is that of Animal Rights. You are free to fight for the cause of humans if you like.

i keep forgetting is it mr or ms anonymous either way… please get the facts straight…some thing peta rarely does…. i do not get paid by any group but if anybody wants to throw me a few dollars my pockets are available… i believe in the freedom of choice and the freedom to run my life as i see it as long as i don’t break any laws…. i do not want to hear from anyone telling me what i can or cannot eat wear or use gains in the medical world derived from animal research.. i think that the majority of petaphiles are hypocrital because they do not follow the entire peta agenda and that includes the majority of your celebrity stable… which means they are totally uncredible in what any of them have to say… and i will never be swayed by what you say… because even though i truly respect that the majority of you believe in what you are saying i do not find what you and your big money propaganda machines are saying is intelligent….its rhetoric that deals with people’s emotions instead of fact and realism… and yes you may be strong and loud and vengeful but because of this… i will keep on fighting your’s and peta’s injustice to the human race…. which you all give very little care to…

kristina bickering? to sway anti petas like steve? how often have you checked this site in the past months to see how many times over and over and over again people have tried to intelligently explain things to steve but he always comes right back with more sinister remarks? he gets paid for it by anti peta groups!!!!! he tries to sway people away from peta!!!! yes what is said to him is helping the cause because he has to keep being reminded that we are strong no matter what he says since he tries to sway people away. give it a try with him yourself. see how far you get before making misjudgements.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Thanks for your kind words Gentleman!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Petey I was asking you to provide an outside link verifying your statement that chickens aren’t administered growth hormones we both are aware of PETA’s stancebut never mind I’ve researched it myself. Based on what I was able to dig up you are correctsince DES was banned no chicken growth hormones have been used at least in the US. But since you posted the broad and dismissive generalization assertion that the “Peta organization is built on lies” I’m asking you for a few more examples excluding this blog. They shouldn’t be so hard to provide should they?

  • Gentleman says:

to ‘Mike’s an idiot’ offenders are always present on this blog with their unintelligent rude language didn’t you have a mother to educate you foulmouth? and please know that Mike is not at all an idiot but very intelligent and much smarter than you!

  • Kristina says:

You know all this bickering just detracts from the actual subject at hand. Some of you act as if you are still five years old in the playground at school. Is this helping further the cause of animal rights? Is putting down someone helping sway their mind to PETA’s side? If you are against PETA provide some evidence for your arguement … and vice versa to help put the naysayers to rest. Petaphiles? Honestly.

Common Sense Steve In response to your comment about Ingrid being against drugs resulting from animal reasearch think about this. The majority of “diseases” in this country obesity heart disease diabetes etc. could be prevented by people eating healthy and excercising and not smoking. Most people refuse to make any lifestyle changes to improve their health. That being the case why on earth should one single animal die for one of these people?? I agree with Ingrid wholeheartedly

  • Mike's an idiot says:

Mike Instead of asking for a link read the letter at the top of the page. it’s a letter from PETA that mentions CHICKENS and HORMONES. That satisfies all 3 aspects of your request correct?

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Petey Can you provide a link regarding PETA chicken and hormones? Since you also used the plural ‘lies’ I’d be interested in you providing a few more examples.

  • Petey says:

This Peta organization is built on lies. They claim chickens are pumped full of hormones but I can guarantee you they can’t give me a name of a single hormone used. Thats because there are none! The poultry industry does NOT use hormones. They claim they are against drugs in food but would they rather have sick animals suffer with no medicine or be treated by antibiotics to improve their quality of life?

  • common sense steve says:

hey anonymous… if this was the case i’d say yeahwin win but this is not the case with the peta execs especially ingrid whose quote of “she would be against a cure for aids if it came from animal research” takes your comments and makes them unrealistic… the majority of petaphiles believe in animals first human’s second maybe even third… there lack of compassion for the human race is quite evident in the way they treat non peta agenda followers…. and how winwin is when peta members go over the edge and become alf members and put human life in danger with arson…..

  • Nefarian says:

this idea makes no sense at all… its a cheap publicity stunt… there is nothing legitimate in that letter! its just to get attention…

  • Common Sense Jay says:

Tamara I can help answer your question. Tony LaRussa isn’t insane. He’s able to still function in society without preaching his diet to everyone else. If he weren’t sane he’d just go around preaching to everybody about how they should be like him and do what he does.

  • Maya, CVT says:

Steve Sorry my question to you was signed Anonymous not sure how that keeps happening. Maya

  • Anonymous says:

HI Steve! Respectfully I wonder if you think it may be possible to help humans and animals at the same time? Steroids such as HGH cause cancer and even create cancers that do not get cured by chemotherapy! So maybe by helping animals we can help humans too! I can think of many more examples like the fact that a vegetarian or even semivegetarian diet can be healthy for humans! Also if we help endangered species by protecting the rainforest and preventing deforestation we can protect plants that give us medicine. Digitalis which is used to treat heart disease comes from plants and many rainforest trees have anticancer medicine and medicine that may cure AIDS. So I think it can be a winwin situation! What do you think?

  • Ana says:

A lot of baseball players go huntinghorrible.

  • Gerry Ardigliano says:

I think it may be worth noting that Clemens and teammate Andy Petitte go on annual churchsponsored hunts in the forests with their young children! Going veg. would be a quantum leap for this “person”.

  • clevaclogs says:

Dude its pps not 2nd ps and if yu dont like it bug off unless ofcourse you dont have a life personaly i support PETA with almost everything they do

  • Michele says:

Commonsense Steve yeah right just because you call yourself something does not mean we are going to believe it’s true you make no sense whatsoever. As far as who gave PETA rights to educate Americans have their Constitution with the Bill of Rights Canadians have their Charter of Rights and Freedoms and presumably most other countries have similar constitutions that allow people and organizations to “educate”. Mothers Against Drunk Driving Greenpeace Amnesty International The Humane Society etc are all able to do what they do because of various rights accorded to them by their countries’ bills of rights. You are a pathetic individual who continues to waste his time fighting against people who are compassionate and selfless and who only want to speak for our fellow earthlings who do not have a voice. You have no credibility because you spend so much time criticizing us instead of spending time helping others humans or nonhuman animals. Get yourself involved in a worthy cause and leave us alone.

  • PETAPHILE says:

COMMON NONSENSE STEVE SHUT YOUR BORING MOUTH AND BRING SOMETHING NEW WE ARE WAITING!

  • bernardo san felice says:

to the bad steve it’s you who are a pathetic hypocrite because you want to display some police orders here but you are just a paid trouble maker and nothing else and furthermore you are always repeating the same boring old shit from yesterday…..

  • silent tongue says:

it amuses me every day more to see how our common nonsense steve is barking into the void welcome you tiny nobody so we can hate on you this is a great tranquilizer and is diverting the blogowner!

  • Dick the Whale says:

common nonsense steve instead of your poisonfilled critisism about PETA’s socalled ‘hypocrite agenda wanting to put down the world’s throat’ you should start to use your damaged brain if it’s not already completely rotten! PETA is fighting against cruelty towards animals not like you for the interest of some consumer protection jerks who just want to fill their pockets with bloodmoney coming out of the throats of tortured animals! you belching sourpuss of an aborted orc i shall show you the way out of this blog making your life so miserable that you will leave in tiddlywinks you smoked waxcuck i throw you into the next quagmire!

  • COMMON SENSE STEVE says:

TAMARA THE WORD IS HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!!!! AND SHAC COMPLAINED BECAUSE THE NONLEATHER BALLS SUCKED. SO THEY STOPPED KISSING THE ANIMAL RIGHTIST’S ASSES AND WENT BACK TO THE REAL DEAL…..LEATHER WHICH IS USED IN ALMOST EVERY SPORT THERE IS….. BUT PETA KNOW’S BETTER THAN TO ATTACK THE ENTIRE SPORT’S WORLD…. IT WOULD BE BAD P.R.

  • COMMON SENSE STEVE says:

MR OR MS FREEDOM…. I AM NOT ADDICTED TO ANIMAL HATRED. WHAT I AM ADDICTED TO IS HATING HYPOCRITICAL UNREALISTIC PETAPHILES WHO SO MUCH WANT TO LOVE ANIMALS TO THE POINT OF HATING HUMANS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW PETA’S RIDICULOUS AGENDA…. PS… I REALLY LOVE IT WHEN YOU BLOGGERS ANSWER MY COMMENTS WITH PATHETIC ATTEMPTS OF A PUT DOWN WITH OUT REALLY ANSWERING THE POINTS MADE…. 2ND PS… I ALWAYS HERE ABOUT PETA EDUCATING INSTEAD OF FORCING THEIR AGENDA DOWN THE WORLD’S THROAT…. WHO THE HELL GAVE PETA THE RIGHT TO EDUCATE?

  • Tamara says:

The NBA used nonleather basketballs for a while but Shaq whined and “complained” not the word I wanted to use really enough that I think they stopped. I live in St Louis and I do wonder how Tony LaRussa STL Cardinals Manager and vegetarian can manage with leather baseballs and all those leather gloves. I just wonder if it occurs to him you know?

  • freedom for animals says:

Common Nonsense Steve How could PETA ask him to swear off leather when there are such dumb suckers in this world like you who are still addicted to animal hatred! PETA has to walk step by step in order to avoid stressing floor wankers like you!

  • COMMON SENSE STEVE says:

HEY I GOT ANOTHER GREAT IDEA…ALSO ASK HIM TO SWEAR OFF USING LEATHER BASEBALL GLOVES LEATHER CLEATS AND HORSEHIDE BASEBALLS…. YOU GUYS ARE REALLY GRASPING FOR STRAWS OR MAYBE YOU GUYS ARE DOING STEROIDS….

  • John Carmody says:

Great letter from us here in Ireland supporting animal rights!!!

  • e says:

…you are kidding. Right? THIS is the solution to all of his problems? Were you serious when you suggested that he should play at home because of vegan food at a stadium? Want to know how many people consider this? Zero. Seriously stick to what you know. This is laughably inept.

  • Caboose says:

MAN PETA really loves publicity stunts P

  • Tamara says:

I dont’ like Roger Clemens and I’m not an American League baseball fan. I didn’t like him with the Astros. And I especially don’t like him whining about not taking steriods. I wouldn’t waste my time on him. Cute letter but he is just an arrogant….well fillintheblank…and probably pitched it NO pun intended after the first sentence.

  • Carla says:

Way too go Dan!! The humor added should help ease some of the anxiety he maybe feeling or may not lol!! At least you can say that you tried!
