Pay Your Taxes—or the Dog Gets It

In the small Swiss village of Reconvilier, two things are certain: death and taxes—especially if you’re a dog. Citing a law dating to 1904, town leaders are telling dog guardians that if they don’t pay their annual pet taxes, officials may kill their dogs.

Reconvilier official Pierre-Alain Nemitz says that the town wants to recoup hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes. He said the move is intended to “put pressure on people who don’t cooperate.”

And you thought the IRS was bad!

Don’t just comment stupidely without knowing. This said : In CH – (Switzerland) they don’t kill dogs for not paying the taxes ! wake up people…

  • Jackie says:

I’d like to see them trying to get away with that when it comes to human babies. Both are defenseless.

Frankly there is no point to this stupid law — why should the dogs suffer for the lack of responsibility or financial problems of their owners — You want to recooperate back taxes — offer your brain to science – so they can dissect it and see what causes stupidy in elected officials! Lay off the dogs, Karma is a B****.

  • dn says:

wow… unfair. That’s really unrealistic too, since some people who dont care about their dogs’ lives will most likely not pay taxes on purpose anyway. Hope they find another way to make people pay their taxes.

  • jadewarlock says:

Frankly, there IS a point here too – if someone cannot pay their taxes for a pet, they really shouldn’t be having a pet because it means they can’t (or at least appear cannot) take care of the pet. If they can’t, that’s more cruel than killing it. Some are just selfish you-know-whats though.

  • Julian Abbott says:

People should have tax benefits for adopting dogs. They certainly shouldn’t have to pay taxes. And killing the poor dog is simply murder.

  • nancy says:

That sounds criminal. I can’t believe that’s legal to kill loved ones because money is owed. Hopefully their citizens cause such an uproar that this doesn’t happen.
