Pamela Anderson Gives Uggs the Boot

A lovely pic of Pam from her new-look website

I’m going to come clean with you guys and admit that I didn’t know what Uggs were until I heard about this. I try to be trendy and keep my ear to the ground about this sort of thing, but apparently the whole Ugg thing has completely eluded me for, like, 10 years. Anyway, I’m told by my colleagues that they were this huge fashion phenomenon that got off the ground in a big way when Pamela Anderson started wearing them in her Baywatch days. Well, Pamela isn’t wearing them anymore, and the story has gone everywhere—starting with People magazine. Here’s what she had to say on the topic.

“I feel so guilty for that craze being started around Baywatch days – I used to wear them with my red swimsuit to keep warm – never realizing that they were SKIN! Do NOT buy UGGs! Buy Stella McCartney or Juicy boots – I’m looking for alternatives myself for my boys and the men in my life! I’m designing some right now for my family and will try and have some available on my Web site soon.”

No wonder they call them Uggs

I know I’ve said this before, but I love you very much, Pamela. On a related note, you should check out the new design for Pam’s website. It’s very, very animal friendly. Did I mention that I love her?

@Mary I believe Amanda was referring to Pam’s new boots, NOT Uggs.

  • kaye says:

With the fur inside I thought it had something to do with shaving them. I didn’t realize they were sheepskin. They’re ugly anyway so I never bought a pair but am ashamed my kids wear them.

  • misha says:

all those saying they didnt realise they were real, come off it! it says on the inside label they are real and its obvious by the feel of them they are made from real sheepskin!

  • cheap ugg online says:

    a great post thank you

  • Huey says:

None of you already realised this? Seriously? I thought everyone knew.

  • Cedwards says:

Thanks Pamela for shedding the light on UGGS! Many consumers including myself until recently don’t take the time to research the products they are wearing or HOW they are made. Unfortunately I have 2 pair but will happily toss them away. We are all on this site to advocate and support animal rights and many have various levels of ideals as it relates to animal rights. Some may have been involved in “this fight” for years and others may be new to it all. If some choose to discontinue wearing UGGS because they are no longer in style that is a start! Animal activists have developed a label of being very harsh and rude to other people. We don’t want to have those who are interested in supporting animal rights turn away because we are unfamiliar with the act of common courtesy and respect to others. Let’s acknowledge the good efforts keep up the work and keep the knowledge flowing so others can be informed!

i just figured out uggs were made of skins a couple weeks ago….just after i’d gotten a pair for my birthday and i had to research my favorite article of clothing for an english project. to be honest i almost cried and i haven’t worn them since…there’s nothing like spending a hundred bucks on dead animals anyway i’m totally quoting this website in my paper for english as proof that wearing animals is wrong wrong wrong….

  • fedecy says:

pamela THANK YOU for your comments. you are the best!

  • Lindsey says:

I got a pair of UGG boots and an UGG scarf for Christmas from my husband… I have been wanting them for a while. I am not a vegitarian I grew up around dairies in CA. I was raised around farmers that were extremely particular about the treatment of their livestock because logically if you have unhealthy livestock you get zero profit. One dairy farmer I grew up with did everything in his power to make sure his cows were happy and healthy maybe that is why I never had a problem with eating meat. I am not a PETA extremist I do eat meat but I COMPLETELY OPPOSE ANY KIND of animal cruelty. I think it is completely acceptable to eat what God gave us for food but I do not believe in the inhumane mistreatment of any animal for profit or for any reason for that matter! I had no idea that the sheep were mistreated to this degree in Australia. I feel bad that the respect for what God gave us to eat has been turned into a mass slaughtering for profit. It really bothers me that people can be so insensitive to an animal all for money! I thought we were more sophisticated than that!

  • Amy Johnson says:

Actually it isn’t always that easy to tell. At first I thought it was fake fur but now I know better! DON’T WEAR UGGS THEY ARE UGGLY!

  • Carrie says:

How can you not now that Uggs are made of sheepskin? Isn’t that obvious? I’m just having a hard time believing that Pam didn’t realize that when she wore them.

  • Sarah says:

i own uggs now and am recently learning about all the cruelty involved in more products than just fur. i’ve always been against fur but after this i will never buy another pair of uggs again. i feel horrible for owning them.

  • Cindy says:

I bought it few years ago thinking it’s cute and that it will keep me warm but never thought about the cruelty done to these animals! I still have it in my closet and everytime I look at it it grosses me out. I don’t want give it to salvation army but don’t want to throw it away… any suggestions? Pam you are an inspiration! I hope I see your crueltyfree boots in the stores!

  • claire says:

I started a petition at my school asking people to sign promising they would not buy the boots! Unfortunately my petition showed that too many people care about style more than the fact that they were waring a sheep’s skin on their feet! gross!

  • Diane says:

Not only are your shoes a “skin” too but so are your hot rocker pants gloves motorcycle jackets leather interiors in the expensive cars and leather couches. Nothing like sitting on a cow!

  • martin says:

dont you all realise that your leather shoes are “skin” also ??

  • Kate says:

I agree we should never wear animals. Thanks Pam! You’re always doing something good!

  • claire says:

hey so where can you see the boot designs? can you actually buy them?

  • sebastianne says:

ok ppl. i just wanna say that uggs are CRUEL EVIL AND A WASTE OF MONEY!!! thay aren’t that bad when they are being made in small scales in rural communities because they use every part of the animal. but mass producing them violates our moral values.

  • tamsyn says:

am well behind you pam u go girl!!!!!!!!!!11

  • Sarah Oswald says:

I just wanted to know how you guys know that all the companys that you ask to be animal friendly will stay that way? What do you do to keep up on them and make sure they stay that way? How do you know that they are not doing it behind your backs?

  • Robert Steir says:

Pam I am the new brand manger for the original ultrasuede micro fiber invented by Toray industies. I am a vegetarian and a peta supporter. I have been introducing ultrasuede to new designers in hopes that they will incorporate the animal friendly product into the footwear and apparel. I would like to provide you with our product so you can produce boot that is more vibrant then suede and can be cleaned and washed. reach me by email. Ultrasuede was made famous by Halston an is man made no animals suffered. It better than suede is much more durable. Let me know how I can get you some product.

  • Cory Philpott says:

Thanks Pamela for not supporting UGGS. It is so hard to not buy a product that come from animals or from animal testing as there is so much of it going on. Let’s really try to stop this unfair treatment of animals. Keep up the good work. Regards cory

  • matt says:

Shes a darling i 3 her for what she does and actually speaks out against animal cruelty! shes not a weak bitch shes a stong asset!

  • Michele says:

UGG boots I’ve tried a pair . Expensive and not worth the price . The most unwielding hard noisy stiffsoled winter boots you’d ever regret buying .I got the falsefur falsesuede KMart boots instead for $30. and they’re warm and bendable.

  • ross says:

If you are really interested in chickens and how they are treated you will take on the big producers like Tyson foods and their research labs and the testing done there and at the Universities through this country. That is where the real peoblems start.

  • wendy lee says:

Leather stinks. Suede stinks. Humans stink. IF fur is considered a status symbol I don’t want to be in their elite fur group. It’s a symbol of Elite animal and human cruelty and depravity. Thanks Pam.

  • Debbie Lucas says:

Good for you Pam.Keep up the good work.

  • Leah says:

Oh. I HATE uggs. I mean what compels people to wear such hideous and barbaric things?
