Victory! European Commission Pledges to Uphold Cosmetics Testing Ban Deadline

Written by PETA | February 1, 2013

Update: The European Commission has confirmed that it will uphold the original March 2013 deadline for the ban on the sale, within the European Union (EU), of any cosmetics or cosmetics ingredients that have been tested on animals. This marketing ban means that companies all around the world that want to sell cosmetics in Europe will have to abandon animal testing for cosmetics that they want to sell in the EU. The decision follows vigorous campaigning by PETA and its international affiliates that included public protests, phone calls, and more than 20,000 e-mails. New Commissioner Tonio Borg met with PETA U.K. to deliver the news personally, and the organization has sent a huge bouquet of flowers to the commission in thanks.

Originally posted on September 22nd, 2011:

PETA friend and animal advocate extraordinaire Pamela Anderson has written to European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli urging him to honor the original 2013 deadline for banning the sale of cosmetics in the European Union that have been tested on animals. The European Commission is considering delaying the deadline for years—and perhaps indefinitely.

In her letter, Pamela states, “I love cosmetics, but there’s no reason for animals to suffer for lip gloss and eye-liner; those cruel tests are from another era.” She adds: “Today, there are effective and 100 percent humane non-animal testing methods. We also already know thousands of ingredients that have a long history of safe use. Hundreds of manufacturers have already been using them for years! Please, don’t turn back the clock.”

Please join Pamela in calling on the European Commission to stick to the 2013 deadline.

Bricoh, your suggestion is brilliant and so apt.

  • bricoh says:

we could test on ‘lifer’ prisoners. i bet even they would get better experimental treatment. the 1st to get the ‘treatment’ would be the Houston couple who got away with making animal ‘crush videos’. the girl actually put her high heel shoe through a kittens eye (among other things and other animals) while these beautiful creatures were alive.

  • Diana says:

I am so happy to hear. It is absolutely correct that we have more than enough components which have tested safe for making beauty product.

    Please enact a ban now.

  • A Human, a real one says:

Animal testing will stop, it’s obvious. The question is when. That’s our part of the job : vegans, vegetarians, animal lovers, meat eaters, scientists working for cruel laboratories, butchers and even animal haters, say NO TO ANIMAL TESTING! Not for the animals, not for your conscience, not to become a better Human (or a real one ), not even because cruelty free brands are fashinable, do it for science! Do you know how much time we waste testing products (all the products, from lipgloss to medicine) on animals? How much faster and easier it would be to test them the modern way? How much more possibilities there are? Progress is part of the Human nature. All is just a matter of time…

  • Viveka Larsson says:

Women don’t want animal tested cosmetics! Stop this now!!

  • ciao18 says:

People who test, abuse and slaughter animals are no different to murderers.Humans are supposed to take care all of God’s creation. Whats happening to us? You know it is really heartbreaking… But in the end I firmly believe that WHAT WE REAP IS WHAT WE SOW. So Stop! Stop! NO MORE TESTING ON ANIMALS. If other companies do not test on these poor creatures, i do not see why others can’t…..

  • nicole camiah says:

Please stop this suffering!!! Europe should be a leader in the humane treatment of animals.

  • Christina Lee says:

Please stop this horrific testing on animals. You shouldn’t be putting chemicals into cosmetics in the first place. Why do animals need to suffer for our need to wear cosmetics?!

  • hyun jo michelle says:

  • Racine says:

Animal testing for cosmetic purposes is completely unnecessary in this day & age! Beauty without cruelty!!!!!

Please respect the 2013 deadline!! Even earlier, if possible…!!

Cosmetics are nice but not nice enough to be used at the cost of abusing animals. Please continue the ban prohibiting animal testing. Why should a pig have to wear lipstick or mascara?

  • michelle morrissette says:

Please don’t refrain from this urgent action. We are custodians of this earth and all that dwell upon it.

  • Sharon Nunez says:

    Please stop this.

  • Callissa says:

There is no reason to extend the 2013 deadline for the ban on cosmetics that still rely on outdated animal testing. There are alternatives for these companies that don’t involve cruel and unnecessary tests on animals.
