Update: Orca Badly Hurt in SeaWorld Clash

Written by PETA | October 1, 2012

Update:

After visiting SeaWorld and taking photographs of Nakai’s injury (two of which are shown below), Dr. Ingrid N. Visser, founder and principal scientist of the Orca Research Trust, found that there are “puncture marks that match orca teeth spacing,” which “is a clear indication that an altercation between the orcas was involved.” The puncture marks in question can be seen at the bottom right of the wound in the first photo below:

This evidence strongly suggests that Nakai’s wound was indeed caused by a bite resulting from incompatible confinement rather than contacting with the side of the pool, as SeaWorld has alleged.

Originally posted September 28:

Following a serious and gruesome injury to an orca in an avoidable attack, PETA has submitted a complaint asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take disciplinary action against SeaWorld for housing orcas incompatibly in violation of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

As you can see in these disturbing photographs, Nakai, an 11-year-old male orca at SeaWorld in San Diego, sustained a laceration so significant that, as a whistleblower said, “a dinner plate-sized chunk of his lower mandible [has been] sheared off, exposing underlying tissues, and bone.” The flesh cut from him “was big enough and intact enough for SeaWorld to retrieve it from the bottom of the pool.”

According to the whistleblower’s report to journalist Tim Zimmermann, Nakai’s injury was a result of “a major altercation” between Nakai and two other orcas, Keet and Ikaika. The AWA makes it clear that “marine mammals that are not compatible must not be housed in the same enclosure.” Yet SeaWorld parks have a long history of housing incompatible orcas from widely divergent groups together in enclosures—and the result has been stress, agitation, aggressive and bloody raking, serious injury, and death.

What You Can Do

It’s clear that SeaWorld can’t be trusted to make the safety and well-being of marine animals its top priority. Please don’t ever visit SeaWorld (or any other marine-mammal park)—and tell company executives why you won’t support the abuse of Nakai and the other intelligent, complex animals they’ve imprisoned and enslaved.

This is so despicable, I cannot believe it.I will never support these wild animal parks b/c animals should be left in the wild, not kept in enclosures that are too small and not consistant to their own environment.I hope something can be done for that poor orca soon.

I agree that the wouldn’t be able to live out of captivity. Here is a crazy idea… Work with me…stop breeding them in captivity! Think that might cut down on some of it! By breeding more in captivity you all make $ and can continue with the old saying.. They can’t live on there own. Stellar jobs! Never going to sea world to give my $ to any of you jokers!

  • kristin says:

SOME ANIMALS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO BE RELEASED BACK INTO THE WILD FOR SEVERAL DIFFERENT REASONS, SO THEY ARE KEPT BY FACILITIES SUCH AS SEA WORLD. FINE…WE GET IT. WE MAY NOT LIKE THAT THEY LIVE IN CAPTIVITY, BUT THEY DO AND THATS NOT GOING TO CHANGE ANYTIME SOON. BUT THERE HAVE TO BE SOME GUIDELINES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THESE FACILITIES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES DONT LIVE IN SUCH CLOSE QUARTERS WITH OTHERS THEY MAY NOT GET ALONG WITH. NONE OF THESE CREATURES WOULD LIVE TOGETHER IN THIS MANOR IN THE WILD, SO THEY SHOULD NOT BE MADE TO LIVE TOGETHER FOR SOME GUY WITH A PORCH WHO WANTS A BIGGER PAYCHECK. THAT IS AWEFUL AND IN HUMANE. I DO BELIEVE THOSE WHO CARE FOR THESE ANIMALS ON A ONE ON ONE LEVEL PROBABLY LOVE THEM VERY MUCH BUT IT IS THOSE AT A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS BUSINESS THAT KEEP THESE ANIMALS TOGETHER BECAUSE OF MONEY. IF THIS HAS BECOME A REPETATIVE OCCURANCES WITH SEA WORLD, ITS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR IGNORANCE. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THE GUY WITH THE PORCH NEEDS TO KNOW HIS POCKET WILL NOT GROW IN THIS WAY. NOT IF THOSE WHO GIVE THE ANIMALS A VOICE CAN HELP IT.

Nakai was BORN in seaworld his siblings were BORN there as well. alot of you think itll be fun and happy in the wild, well their so dependant on humans they -like keiko- will seek it out. They wont survive, so get off your high horse and realize this is reality accidents happen to all whales whether wild or captive. but Nakai is under great care. in the wild he’d sustain an infection and die. o please stop preaching the free train cause it aint happening.. ever.

  • sandra suhl says:

I wish the person responsible this hurt!!!

this poor animal has got to be in pain. I hope and pray he is not suffering. Something needs to be done fast. How would the company CEO feel with a piece of his flesh removed and a gapping hole left. Not to good, bet you he wouldn’t care about money then.

  • Paulie says:

Sea World is like an animal circus–a relic of the 19th century. What kind of moron would pay to watch animals perform tricks in captivity?

  • Chris says:

No animal should be kept in captivity. Part of the reason why i dont go to any park that has animals or circuses. This is horrible. But more than just not “supporting” this places by going to them cant something else be done about it. I certainly hope that someone is looking into making sure this poor animal is receiving the proper medical care it neds

  • Ashley says:

If the trainers really cared they will stop helping to breed more of these animals to live out crappy lives in captivity for the continuation of these profitable marine circuses. If they really cared they would walk away and speak up about what is really going on behind the scenes. By staying silent and and lying to the public to paint a rosy picture of captivity they are continuing to perpetuate the misery these places cause. The only way to really stop these places is for people who care to take a stand against this disgusting and unnecessary industry, and of course to never visit any of thse parks.

  • Lauren Stone says:

Dear Seaworld, do you really think you are amusing humans by this horrible incident. When will you stop this brutal act of containing marine life and wildlife live in their natural environments.

  • Mary Ann says:

Leave these animal go free! Don’t believe that these animals born in captivity would not survive in the ocean. Shame on you Sea World!!!!!

  • ForTheLoveOfAnimals says:

TO JUNIPER: People that fight dogs say they love their animals, too. If they REALLY loved these animals, they wouldn’t keep them locked up.

  • Thearesa says:

That is so wrong, scary and horrible in so many ways!!!!

  • andy huppert says:

on one hand it’s important to show people what animals are like, so they learn to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of them. But if that’s the price, then no, f**k you Seaworld

  • E says:

What has become of this sweet injured Orca? Has he been isolated in a hospital tank, been given surgery? Please update. Prayers said!

  • Kathy B says:

What on God’s earth do they think they are doing to these beautiful creatures. This has got to stop now. We speak so much about the poor dolphins in China, but look what we are doing in the U.S.A.

  • Kristine Schwenck says:

This terribly disturbing! Please get this creature the help and attention it deserves NOW!

  • Bl says:

Can they help this poor guy?

  • debbie lane says:

if the trainer love them so much then why don they let them go home to thier familys. they have all been ripped from their homes and family and been enslaved for the rest of their lives this is a sin and cruel. so please do not say the trainers love them becasue they love there jobs not the whales. set them free anad stop the whole ungly mess with kidnapping animals from their family. it is happening to all kind of animals not just whales. it need to stop now so don’t go to theses place and support this kind of cruel abuse. i know i won’t go.
