Oprah to Go Vegan for Three Weeks!

Which is, quite possibly, the best news in the history of news. It’s close, anyway. Inspired by the book Quantum Wellness, by Kathy Freston, Oprah’s going to be cutting all the meat, dairy, and eggs out of her diet in an effort to live a healthy, cruelty-free lifestyle. If you didn’t catch tonight’s show, be sure to look out for the reruns, but in the meantime, if you want to follow in Oprah’s footsteps, you can take a pledge to be vegan for 7 days. Oprah’s going to be giving up alcohol, wheat, and sugar as well – which, well, more power to her – but our pledge (for obvious reasons) is focusing on the veganism part. So you don’t need to worry about giving up your stiff gin and tonic after a hard day of work. Or is that just me who does that?

Anyway, according to Oprah’s website, the first day’s gone really well! Here’s what she says about her reasons for trying it out:

“How can you say you’re trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?”

Thank you, Oprah! I can’t wait to hear how it goes.

I’m still just disappointed that Oprah did this for her health and then only did it temporarily. The animals are still dying. I don’t think that’s a belief that’s a fact.

  • Lee-Ann says:

I wish everyone was at least veggie vegan including my meat eating husband but what we can’t forget is the good that people like Oprah do in poverty stricken Africa for example and at the end of the day as much as I would love a meat free ideal world we also have to respect that other people have their own views and that will always be the way of life. So as long as well all do our best in OUR beliefs and do our best to put across our cause without becoming control freaks then the world is a better place. x

  • Dorothy Roche says:

I cannot believe that PETA has said that Oprah is going Vegan for 3 weeks. PETA put this ad onto their website on 5202008. Did you know that just recently Oprah gave away thousands of coupons to people to buy KFC? How is this going Vegan? Check it out. It is a fact!!!

  • yangdol says:

Wow!!! Great news!!! I deeply wish Oprah to live a Cruelty free life. I am very big fan of her since childhood. She inspire me in many ways but the only habbit I dont like is her living style of being “diehardnon veggie”. She just spoils my mood when she brings topic on meat in her show…..otherwise I love her!!! She is beauty with brain! She is glamorous!!! Hope I can hear a big good news for this new year. This will be a big gift for this new year!!! Hope she joins our vegan family Yes Oprah! Yes!!! You can do it!!!!

  • suresh mathew says:

“hey Oprah … are the man !!!”

  • Gerry says:

I forgot to say that when Oprah won her trial in Texas she invited the “beef industry” on her show twice WITHOUT OPPOSITION in order to make amends due to the damage her words caused them “that just stopped me cold from eating another burger”. Oprah is no Muhammad Ali Martin Luther King etc. She will almost always sellout to the status quoa.

  • Kelley says:

One more reason to stop eating dead cows and other animalsthe CDC now believes a substantial percentage of what was thought to be Altzheimer’s disease is actually the human form of mad cow diseasethe last issue of Marie Claire had a good article on this subject.

  • lynda downie says:

Mitsuki will be safe in your arms by the time you read this Annalena but I know the feeling. When I had my baby Tsuki spayed I paced and fretted til I saw her face after her surgery at the vet’s office.

  • Ana says:

Hi Annalena! I don’t find celebrities all that admirable. There are very few who walk the walk and talk the talk Alicia Silverstone for example. I like the focus to be on real people who do alot with very litle. Peace!

  • Jane says:

I have sent Oprah a few messages asking her to be compassionate and go veggie so I am thrilled to hear she is at least trying it. She could do more for our cause than anyone else. I just hope she will stick with it.

  • Annalena says:

Hello Ana Thank you! I meet a lot of people who are absolutely smitten with Oprah.I prefer the likes of Jane G the primate expert and countless others who work behind the scenes.I also question the purity of her intentions. Was she completely blind to the suffering of animals used for food? For all of these years? I do not mean to put a damper on the celebration.I just do not see Oprah as someone I greatly admire. I remember watching a beautiful and tragic program about a woman in Asia who rescues elephants from the entertainment and workslavery industry. She runs a sanctuary. A young Elephant horrified by the sight of humans broke some of her ribs in anger when she first brought him to the sanctuary. She stayed up with him for several nights stroking him until he trusted her and they now share a great bond. People like her need more attention from Peta. I understand that celebrities grab mainstream attention. They do not really do much for me however. I am so nervous right now.My little girl Mitsuki is being spayed at this moment. I am worried about her and can not wait to have her home!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

I wonder if she had her numbers checked before she began? It would be very interesting to compare them three weeks later.

  • Ana says:

Annalena I totally agree with every word you wrote I feel the same about Oprah and her show!! Good post!

  • Annalena says:

I am not really a fan of Oprah. I hate the show. She is very hypocritical. She talks about starving children one day and then she talks about makeovers and thousand dollar shoes the next with her celebrity friends. If she adopts the lifestyle fantastic! She does a lot of shows on the best burgers in America. However I would love to see her ditch leather and fur as well as products tested on animals.

  • kelly says:

In addition to the fat and cholesterol there are all those DRUGS the farmers pump into the livestock Hormones medicines. Those animal are walking chemicals by the time the farmers and their sleazy vets get through with them. And we eat those chemicals when we eat the meat or drink the milk

  • kelly says:

I hope she realizes that her cholesterol level and blood pressure are already going down. People who have respect for their bodies and their health don’t eat meat. It is poison.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Is it not wonderful when you can bare witness to watching someone evolve into a more compassionate human being? The day we give up hope will be a very sad day. You go girl! You can do it! Peace for all animals!

  • Russell says:

I am rein love with her

  • Daily Veg Editor says:

I am shocked rigid… and I’ve been doing this for so long that nothing shocks me any more. Apart from I guess when people like Oprah wake up and try compassion instead of greed. Let’s hope it sticks.

  • Niranjan says:

It will be awesome if Oprha does an Ad for PETA! Wow! That will soooooo cool! Way to go PETA . . .

  • h says:

…but will she continue to wear leather? Can’t wait to see!

  • Kristen says:

I’m not a big fan of Oprah she is very hypocritical in many aspects especially money but she does have a large following of viewers and in the end I hope she promotes her new vegan diet and sticks with it.

  • Alexandra from Brazil says:

    Yes! I love you Oprah.

  • Bea Brinkley says:

Oprah the secret activist for animals. Go Oprah you will be well rewarded with a slimmer figure. The one you always want to have. I will be watching and hoping that she will like it. She is a leader and there are plenty of Ophra followers. I have hopes….

  • Bronwyn Hughes says:

Great news Oprah not only is this kinder to all the wonderful animals but healthier for you too! I trust that Oprah will stay a vegetarianvegan and that her many viewers will be encouraged to to do so too! “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals” Ghandi.

  • LiveVegan says:

Fantastic. Good on Oprah and great news for animals. Great publicity for a cruelty free life and diet. Now if Michael Moore could put down the carrion burger and go vegan

  • lynda downie says:

WOW!! First the PUPPY MILL issue and now thisVEGANISM for 3 weeks! This is HUGE. I haven’t had much interest in Oprah til now. But I’m really proud of her for this action. Thanks Opraaaaaaah! I thought the puppy mills thing was HUGE but this Oprah

  • jody says:

If anyone gets the chance please email mention get the word out to Oprah !!! From 100 vegan Oprah can order home delivery from some of the best award winning vegan restaurants in the world. It is the best food in the world!!! Thank you Oprah!!

  • c.cho says:

Wow possibly the best news I’ve heard all year!!! Much thanks to Oprah for giving Veganism a chance and drawing attention to the reality of animal abuse. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brian W. Lockyer says:

This is cool… One thing I’m curious about is If she does well over the three weeks is there a chance she will adapt to the lifestyle permanently? or is it just the three week run no matter what? Peace Brian.

  • Allison says:

Amazing! More power to you Oprah! This rocks!

  • Kelly C. says:

    Go Oprah!

  • Rex's Mom says:

That’s great but is she giving up fur or has she already?

  • Naissa says:

Yay! As many women do I love Oprah. And we all know the power she has to broaden peoples minds. Lets hope more people will do as she is and want to live a more humane and lealthy lifestyle! GO BIG O!

  • lizbeth says:

hey.. this could be the start of a whole new beautiful and compassionate relationship between yours truly the big ‘O’ and animals .. the same animals that are so horribly treated in their millions and billions all over the world.. I hope her veg period does get through the 3 weeks no mean feat.. and a compasssionate seed is planted in her soul and hey.. she may even be moved or encouraged to go and spread the word far and wide !!.. ie. less meat or veggievegan.. save the world.. save animals.. no puppy mills.. no wearing fur animal testing free products etc. etc.. go go go!.. oh well .. at least here’s hoping’..

  • Mark says:

Ingrid Newkirk should mail her a letter and a copy of “Animal Liberation” or “Earthlings” or something like that! Really this is a great opportunity to advertise PETA and the seriousness of animal rights don’t miss it! I’d go with “Animal Liberation” but you guys know everything.

  • Laura Thompson says:

Boy I REALLY hope she sticks with it and inspires more of her viewers to do so too. That would be AWESOME!
