Nobody ‘Likes’ ‘We ♥ Wool’

Written by PETA | September 14, 2011

There’s nothing chic about mutilating sheep, and the Australian wool industry’s efforts to make the sweater set appeal to the younger set via its Facebook page have hit a snag. After PETA asked its supporters to post photos from our “We ♥ Sheep” album, which show the unlovely cruelty behind the wool industry’s “We ♥ Wool” page, the page was shut down!

The wool industry is notorious for mutilating millions of gentle lambs every year with “mulesing,” a crude and cruel attempt to prevent a maggot infestation known as “flystrike.” Farmers cut huge chunks of flesh—not just skin—from lambs’ backsides, usually with little or no pain relief. In agony, the mulesed lambs scuttle sideways like crabs, and the deep wounds can take weeks to heal, often becoming infected before they do.

You can help save sheep’s skin—and get under the wool industry’s skin—by shopping for cruelty-free clothing

So how many people realise that ‘little lambs’ grow into big less-cute sheep? It’s how this all gets promoted. “Look at this poor little lamb and all the pain it’s going through!” No one would really look and care much if it was a socking great ram! I lived on a farm and we lost several sheep to FlyStrike because we couldn’t afford to call the shearer out three times a year for a flock of 30. At shearing costs of $5 a head, it’s rediculous. We looked after those sheep, I had to hand-crutch many of them. But when you people all against mulesing have pulled wriggling maggots out of the flesh of a living, breathing, fighting animal, you all come back and tell me that it’s so inhumane and horrible. I’ve done that. Tried so hard to save an animal that was just doomed. A couple weeks healing would be pittance if they were never bothered by fly-strike in that area. Maggots wriggle and they crawl and they could get inside the sheep and eat it from the inseide out. And you all want to stop the one method that might prevent this because some poor little lamb is bleeding? Sheep have elastic bands put around their tails and testicles and have bits of plastic punched through their ears, how much do you care about that?! I have seen far worse animal cruelty than this. Go and get up to your elbows deep in maggots and faeces and sweat and tears and then you complain about the ‘poor little lamb’ in the photo.

I have no patience for this. There should not even be a question as to this being wrong and why there isn’t a law against it is beyond me. Why in the world would any human being do this to any living thing? It is so disgusting and shameful I just have no words. Were are our laws? We are rediculous anymore in this country we have no morals or respect! What it’s ok as long as money is made? Is that what we are here in America, there is no limits as long as a dollar is made?
