Newsflash–Sea Kittens Are Animals!

From the category of “Well, duh” comes this story out of Copenhagen: A Danish journalist was found guilty this week of deliberately killing 12 guppies and, logically, of violating animal protection laws.

In an effort to demonstrate the toxicity level of a shampoo, TV host Lisbeth Koelster poured shampoo into an aquarium and, lo and behold, almost all the guppies were poisoned to death.

I’d say that’s about as far from protection as you can get.

Of course, the journalist’s lawyer argued that the charges were erroneous—I guess sea kittens don’t warrant protection? “Fish are killed by suffocation in industrial fisheries and we throw live lobsters into boiling water,” he said, “but we don’t press charges against fishermen or restaurant owners.”

Well! If that doesn’t just give us ideas ….

I completely agree with Mel 100%. We are omnivors anyways, and although I’m a vegetarian, I would raise any potential children I have to eat meat. It’s natural. Overkilling is just as harmful as saving every living thing out there. There’s a reason why there are predators- to keep the population under control. People really need to stop being so… Protective. I love animals, and if I see an animal who is hurting I will try and make the suffering go away, either by bringing it to a vet or killing it if it’s injuries are beyond return, but I would never tell anyone to just not kill anything. WE ARE OMNIVORES. This doesn’t mean we go out and abuse and kill everything we see, it means we eat what our bodies are meant to eat. Be a vegetarian, but don’t yell at people for not being one. Also, go to friggen school and learn some biology. Seriously.

Anyone who says that fish cannot overcrowd or that not fishing can’t harm their ecosystem is mistaken. Any ecosystem that has no deterrents predation animal human or other to keep the population down will multiply rapidly. Thanks to ecological factors BTW some beyond our control fish have been known to quickly multiply because they have no predators. And sometimes that in turn destroys another population’s ecosystem and possibly the other’s species. That’s a simple biology fact you MUST maintain a balance. Example of what can happen if you don’t have the right balance Australia has a rabbit plague because someone brought a pair of them to the country and they’ve multipled to the point they’ve destroyed ecosystems in the country and killed off some species. Of course I would predict that you’d say “It’s not right to kill the rabbits” but they’re a menace there. Let’s also mention deer too we have some people say we should feed the deer so they’ll survive. Oh and don’t hunt them because we shouldn’t be cruel to animals. What this does fact this makes them docile and has them wander roads and towns in search of more homes with food. This is also why there are many deercar accidents and some with fatalities to the humans every year. This is also why the idea of letting all animals live to be a ripe old age is mistaken. If you’ve been to a cow town imagine what you see times thousands of acres. Nothing but dirt mud and relatively unsanitary conditions. It simply cannot and will not work to save all animals from any form of cruelty be it the way they’re slaughtered or a fight for survival which can happen in overcrowding or other issue. Same with not fishing some it has to be done to some point. I do not advocate over fishing as it harms the ecosystem but I do maintain you must fish some. To not believe this is being naive to your world.

  • Christopher Cochran MD says:

Guppies don’t live in the sea thereby obviating their status as a “sea” kitten.

  • greg says:

They were guppies… Why does this matter? People are dying all over the world yet somehow someone killing a few guppies makes it on to your main site. This whole organization is a frivolous waste of time. Watch penn and teller’s bullst show the peta episode.

  • Jacob says:

I love the people saying that we have to go fishing to prevent overpopulation. It reminds me of South Park “If we don’t kill those animals they might die!” Uncle Jimbo

  • Sarah says:

WHY WOULD YOU KILL FISH IN ORDER TO SHOW THAT KILLING FISH IS BAD? THAT’S LIKE SHOOTING A MAN TO PROVE THAT SHOOTING MEN IS MORALLY WRONG.

  • Vegetariansmakebetterlovers says:

Uhh should’nt Lisbeth Koelster see that OF COURSE SHAMPOO KILLS FISH? IF SHAMPOO WAS A GAS SOMEONE PUTTING YOU IN A TANK THEN POURING THAT GAS ON YA MIGHT JUST KILL YA? NO DUH!!!!! pant pant sorry spazzed out

  • Brad says:

Mac Do you really believe that fisherman are doing fish a favor by preventing overcrowding? Do you realize that the oceans were 95 more populated before the onset of industrial fishing? Do you realize that marine ecosystems have their own mechanisms to prevent overcrowding? Fishing causes immense pain and suffering whether you accept it or not. Btw has everyone seen the study httpwww.dmgd.org which links hunting to small penis size?

  • Carla says:

Thanks Mel “overcrowding” key word. What do you think fish farming is??

  • Val says:

Omgsh! Thoose poor things! How sad THIS IS JUST TERRIBLE! I hope they go to jail. I can’t imangine those poor guppies!!! waaaaa ”

  • mac says:

What are sea kittens? Never have heard such a thing. That said of course this is a no brainer that the person did. Yet at the same time at least she showed the dangers of the stuff if it were to run off into something larger such as a river.

  • Pepsi One is Fun says:

    Stupid Danish journalists.

  • mac says:

They’re not sea kittens they’re fish. And you have to fish some to make sure they aren’t overcrowded and die off that way. Overfishing IS the bigger issue than fishing at all. And yes it’s a nobrainer to see that shampoos is toxic to fish. That said can’t you at least also consider that in the same token this shows the dangers of some of the stuff we use on wildlife and this brought it to the forefront?

  • Brien Comerford says:

These people who kill and torture mammals fish amphibians reptiles and God’s other creatures will have to reckon with a higher power in the imminent future.

  • Mel says:

Sea Kittens DO NOT EXIST fish do. PETA I do not get why you use any story to tout your views. Sure this woman was stupid and made a mistake but let’s be real she proved a point on how dangerous these chemicals are in our waterways toward fish. All that said you CANNOT avoid fishing. You have to do that in order to have space for the ones coming into the world. Overcrowding is very dangerous and is cruel and destroys species just as it’s seen as cruel to boil a lobster and eat it.
