Naked, Hooked, and Flailing: A New Fish Demonstration

Written by PETA | October 17, 2007

What’s the best way to draw attention to the suffering that fish are forced to endure when they’re yanked out of their natural environment and impaled on the end of a hook? It’s a very dangerous question to ask at a PETA brainstorming meeting. Because some of us are literalists, here at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

With that having been said, here are some stunning pictures from our latest anti-fishing demonstration in San Diego. There were a lot of media-type folks at the event, and you can read some of the coverage here.

I am a bit disgusted by this. I am sorry but i agree that cruelty to animals needs to be stopped but i think there are other manners in going about getting your point out there. I mean children do not need to see such gruesome acts being played out for all to see. I think that it is important to educate people but try to do it in a tasteful manner not one that is not appropriate for all to see…if my child saw this i would have huge issues with it.

  • Grilled Hamburger and Bacon says:

Fish along with ALL animals need people to speak up for them since fish cannot protect themselves from their human killers. Fish also cannot protect themselves from their predator brethren either. Think if I was a fish I’d rather have a hook in my mouth than half my body gone after my neighbor chewed me in half trying to get dinner. You PETA people have IQs of about 10 maybe.

  • Gaets says:

    Y’all are full of bullshit.

  • Katie says:

I’m sorry but this is ridiculous. Do you people honestly think seeing a pale balding man sticking a hook through his self will make you want to be a vegetarian? No sorry I love my meat and I will keep eating meat no matter what some animallove green earth granola monkey says. p.s. and um fish isn’t a meat is it?

  • Mr. Chief says:

Anonymous is now a PETA sheep!

  • Michele says:

I think that this demo is one of the most powerful ones I have seen in awhile. Anyone who thinks that the process of getting hooked is painless for fish just needs to do some basic research. Fish along with ALL animals need people to speak up for them since fish cannot protect themselves from their human killers. Their level of intelligence or ability to remember things cannot be used to decide whether they should have rights otherwise babies and developmentally disabled people would not be entitled to any rights either. We keep getting the illogical nonsensical and sometimes psychotic comments from the anti’s on these blogs but they should have no impact on the true animal rights activists. All one has to do is read the comment from “Anonymous” on October 19 2007 0830 PM where this individual has decided to go veg based at least in part on the information provided by PETA. THAT is what counts knowing that there are people out there who are receptive to learning about animal abuse and who are willing to make changes in their lives for the sake of the animals.

Rojo Arizona has the most species of galliformes of any state in the US. Six species of quail and also wild turkey abound not to mention chukar partridge. The Sonoran desert is teaming with life and greenery. It is the desert that you see in westerns and it has the big saguaro cacti. I spent a few days there and contributed a thousand dollars or so to the local economy and game and fish department. I’m still a murdering redneck a term that rural people generally consider bigoted. Mars Peta disciples consider themselves better than nature and hold that they are above it. They do this as they tell you to stop interfering with nature despite the obvious fact that no matter what humans are intricately intertwined with nature. More urban spaceship ignorance.

  • Mars says:

SusannahDespite what false info PETA and the other vegan groups put out humans are well adapted to eating a variety of food sources including meat.Even plants eat meat so their little experiement in biology fails.Applying aspects of one specie to another will always result in differences. Justify killing? How do you justify the death at your door? As for me no justification is needed.I’m a natural part of this planet and as such nothing I can do is unnatural. The difference between us is that I know and fully comprehend that in order for me to live then something must die.

  • rojo says:

Chris how hard is it to find quail in Az didn’t see much ground cover when i visited some years ago.

  • halo snipe says:

There is no point in animal rights. Dont say that I’m proabuse because I am not.

  • Christopher Cochran MD says:

Ariel Is that your interpretation of the NT Bible or does it actually say we have no right kill animals? Rojo I just got back from a quail hunting trip in Arizona and spent some time in a pub with some interesting fellows from Australia one of which is a cattle farmer outside of Adelaide. We compared cruel and tortuous practices over numerous pints of beer. Then we gorged on the flesh of some murder victims. It was a wonderful cultural exchange. I did learn about some of the draconian hunting laws in your country and it reinforced my resolve to continue the struggle to maintain my rights to hunt and fish. With twerps like the ones at the beginning of this post being the best ambassadors for antifishing I feel at least fishing is safe for the time being. I completely agree with your assessment of “cute.” I honestly believe this whole animal rights movement is an overdeveloped sense of cute.

  • alex says:

stop dragging animals into this just coz you cant stand the truth im vegan yet i still luv my cat brogan plus i just ordered sum vegan cat food online go 2 at 7this moment she is asleep on my knee D

  • halo snipe says:

Sorry that I talk in Doublespeak Truthfully In this blog site. 19841337 Elite

  • Doug says:

Though the pics make me homesick it looks like a great demonstration though alas no scantily clad females with hooks in creative places.

  • halo snipe says:

Yes rojo i agree. Joseph Stalin The savior of Russia said this “The death of a man is tragedy. The death of a million is a statistic”

  • Susannah S says:

OK RayO let’s talk about nature since you talk about it in nearly every post you write In nature animals often eat poop you do too if you eat meat! So there you have something in common with an animal in “nature.” In nature certain species kill their mates after mating. How about that for an idea? In nature carnivores run down their prey and kill it with their teeth and claws. Have you tried that lately or do you stand off in the trees somewhere and blast them with your shotgun? Not exactly a fair fight is it? Not at all the way “nature” intended. You want to talk nature? In NATURE a carnivore has long teeth and a short gut. Human beings on the other hand have the grinding teeth and long gut of an HERBIVORE. Hello? You excuse all sorts of cruelty by quoting “nature” but in nature there is no ulterior motive when a carnivore kills another animal no ego involved no trophy mentality. In nature a carnivore is merely trying to survive. How do YOU by nature an herbivore justify YOUR killing of animals? You do paticipate in killing them if you eat meat but YOU aren’t the one doing the killing unlike the lions tigers and bears oh my!. You are merely eating carcasses from slaughterhouses. In NATURE carcasses are consumed by vultures and hyenas. So you are keeping company with scavengers not the brave hunters when you eat meat today. Hello! Your continued ridiculous comparisons of today’s humans to animals in nature doesn’t hold water and it gets tired and old. Come up with a new excuse for why you still eat meat. And why come on a PETA blog to begin with and defend meateating? HELLO!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Mars That’s true they do love their catnip. If we can keep them perennially stoned on the stuff they will become good vegan cats.

  • halo snipe says:

    PETA…….. Headbanger style

  • rojo says:

trevor it revolves around emotional attachment. For instance if someone you know personally is killed in an accident it is substantially more painful than if you hear a news report of 4 people dying in the next state over. The value of life is very subjective to the organism and onlooker alike. Decisions are made on value though I would give my life to ensure either of my girls live. And in times of disaster where it is women and children first to safety. When it comes to pets humans seem to have chosen the more intelligent organismsor at least those givimg emotional feedback for companionship and regard them accordingly.

  • halo snipe says:

Ridiculous. Fishing isn’t wrong. Fish like PETA says are like humans in feelings and intelligence. HA. Last time I checked my pet fish that I’ ve caught couldn’t run a countryAKA Bushitus make any smart decisions or remember anything for three minutes. They don’t complain either when they are taken out of the water so I can clean the tank or If they are ready for the great beyond. FLUSH

  • Anonymous says:

omg i am sooo goin veg

  • Ariel says:

And once again a friendly little reminder to our serious NEWCOMERS “MARS” and “RayO” are not ar’s activists. They are anti’s. Hi Robert Steir Perhaps it was VISA that provided the discounts not PeTA itself?

  • Ray-O says:

    Viva la selfloathing!

  • Mars says:

Mike Q I can’t catch feline distemper.Get that cat hooked on catnip and he’ll be a dedicated vegan until he dies.LOL

  • Mike Quinoa says:

RayO A cat being an obligate carnivore can’t develop atherosclerosis but you can. So I wouldn’t take your “I’m a tiger” selfdelusion too far.

  • Ariel says:

Hi Trevor! And WELCOME! post 101807 at 527pm Your perception is right on target if you are referrring to people who are more familiar with petsdomesticated animals. As for your question I suppose that’s something that the anti’s could answer “best.” IF you do get any answers dont’ expect them to make any sense.

  • josee says:

Your only bringing jesus into this because you know its wrong and you could never stand up things need to change but first we need to change.

  • Ray-O says:

Mike Cats can’t hold a bar of soap. We can. However I doubt either of us could enjoy some fake fish. Yum… fake fish. Being sapient doesn’t force you to be compassionate to fish. If a cat were sapient he would still eat fish. As for me I’m a sapient bipedal cat at heart so I’m still eating meat.

  • Trevor says:

Yes I am new to this site. I am not trying to be hateful or argumentative just posting my point of view. It always seems like people are so quick to defend the lives of animals that they have a perceived personal connection with. How is the life of a lesser organism not as valuable?

  • Ariel says:

Jesus did not catch fish. His apostles did. Jesus may have eaten fish but He was not making that a point at all in His mission. One of His main teachings wasis to “be merciful.” St. Francis of Assisi who is considered to be the most Christlike saint is profoundly known for proclaiming his firm belief that animals including fish are our brother and sisters. In fact the fish used to gather at the side of the boat he was in and he would talk to them. They in turn responsed to him. Francis did not kill animals or fish nor did he eat them after his conversion. He was carrying out Jesus’ teaching to the fullest of “be merciful.” and preach the Gospel to all creatures Ar’s activist who are believers in the Chrisitan faith carry out Jesus’ teaching of being merciful. As well as ar’s activists in other faiths carrying out kindness mercy as well as ar’s activists who are atheists are merciful because they believe in a positive force. mercy It also says in the NT Bible that there are two kinds of flesh human and animal which includes fish. And that both flesh have spirits aka souls. God created animals who give glory to Him just by their being. He gave them life and mankind has no right is kill the animalsfish that takes away the glory that they give Him.

  • Bryant says:

Jesus caught and ate fish maybe you guys should run an ad against him too.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

RayO Yeah and cats lick their anuses in nature. Does that mean you should do the same? Trevor “Cute” is a subjective thing. Of course one life form is as valuable as another. Are you new to this site by any chance?

  • Ariel says:

As always the anti’s NEVER get the point with their shallow minds. So they comment on here to prove their ad nauseum stupidity. Ok ok we believe you’re stupid! Is that what you finally want to be told?

  • Margarita says:

I wish they wouldn’t do that it hurts just looking at it being hooked like that. Anyway people who enjoy meat and fish are very hard to change their mind Peta people should take another approach for their protest.

  • liliana says:

I don’t understand that things like this i cannot watch in the news. I would like the news show all this to make the people see the reality.

  • Ariel says:

These animal rights’ activists are exceptionally amazing! They are actually visibly proving their strong compassionate convictions about animals’ lives and sea life! Many many thanks to them for being even more of an inspiration!

  • Mars says:

Only humans are stupid enough to hook themselves.FYI your own study said that fish don’t feel pain from being hooked.

  • Jason Levy says:

Amazing! I love when PETA does these performance art type demonstrations!

  • Ray-O says:

Hey hooks are sharp… Almost like a bear’s claws during the salmon breeding season! This happens in nature all the time hello?

  • Gen says:

Wow where would the world be WITHOUT these brave souls who make these statements?

  • Trevor says:

why is it wrong and sad to kill animals that are cute and cudely and not wrong to kill bugs spiders rodents cows pigs fish and other animals and plants for our own needs and comforts? How is the life force more valuable if the animal is cute?

  • Lancelot says:

This type of demonstration is so important since we are the only being that can picture ourselves as other species. I think that if more people pictured themselves as animals in their final hours in the hellish fur meat and experimental industries the world would change faster towards a higher ethical state.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter says:

This is about as profound as you can get. What a fantastic group. You most definitely made one heck of a wonderful statement. More power to all of you thank you for speaking out for the Fish. You are a beautiful group of people. Maher and Newkirk 2008

  • Robert Steir says:
