Monkey Abuse Hits Home at Chief’s House

Written by PETA | September 7, 2011

Victory: As a result of PETA’s campaign, the Army announced that it is ending its cruel use of monkeys in chemical attack training exercises and will instead use advanced human simulators!

As the U.S. Army is poised to begin poisoning African vervet monkeys at Maryland’s Aberdeen Proving Ground, PETA’s “monkeys” descended on Secretary of the Army John McHugh’s home to demand that he stop the cruelty.

If McHugh was a little uncomfortable that we were on his front doorstep, perhaps he should think about how uncomfortable the Army makes its primate prisoners, injecting the monkeys with a drug overdose in a crude and cruel attempt to replicate the effects of a nerve agent attack. The drug overdose causes the monkeys to suffer from violent seizures and vomiting, and some even stop breathing. The monkeys are subjected to this abuse every few months for as long as three years.

Military and civilian training programs around the world use sophisticated human patient simulators that can be programmed to mimic the human response to a nerve agent attack, which is very different from a monkey’s. Not only are the Army’s monkey experiments cruel and inefficient, they also violate Department of Defense policies prohibiting the harming of primates in training exercises and requiring that non-animal methods be used whenever they are available.

We brought the message home today for McHugh. Now you can help stop the U.S. Army from poisoning monkeys by calling Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, commanding general of Aberdeen Proving Ground, at 410-278-0833 and urging his facility to switch to non-animal training methods.

There is no need in this sort of cruelty. They know it’s a deadly virus why do we need to see exactly how a living thing agonizingly slowly dye. God must weep every time time people intentually hurt and animal. Monkeys have brains, make decisions, have familes and an feel love just like we do. What an abomination to a people considered to be a civialized natiion.

Please, there is alwayas a choice, choose to protect and respect innocent animals who would never hurt humans. Then, why are humans so keen to hurt animals?

these monkeys are not yours. animals that never should have been taken from their natural habitat. like hundred years ago when the indian people where moved. still its make you barbaric

  • etienne vregord says:

This must be stopped immediately, currently used technology, before for about 30 years ago when people were more primitive animals were exposed to such evil. Technology has taken over a long time ago, at least, the people included in the future. These people who torments the monkeys still are nothing but devils and sadists…

  • Kawosa says:

This form of entertainment for the troops is disgusting. There can be no need for this unhuman ethic and never will be. The authorization for this action deserves investigation for possibel charges.

I would like to see all support of anti-vivisection directed to the heads of depts responsible for this cruelty and to make the public aware of this atrocity. The blogs are informative yet not effective. Call and write these people without souls and let them know as taxpayers you are completely against this type of experimentation.

  • saritha says:

    Atrocious! Should Stop this…

  • Mary DeMarchi says:

Stop this insane practise immediately, it is cruel & totally unnecessary. It does not take cruelty, torture & death to animals to live life, rather the opposite, live WITH nature, stop destroying earths creatures.

This antiquated form of experimentation must stop. Please use patient simulators!

  • Me says:

Test on yourself…sound crazy, so is testing on animals!

Please stop this cruelty! There are other ways to test things rather than on helpless animals. Also, as a quote “They are in violate Department of Defense policies prohibiting the harming of primates in training exercises and requiring that non-animal methods be used whenever they are available.”

  • Gayle Edelman-Tolchin says:

This is the 21st century and there are alternatives to testing monkeys! Let them live their lives out peacefully in a sanctuary. Show the world that you care about living beings!

I can’t help bu think a person who will do this is revolting and cruel beyond words, just for a job. Stop this now.

I thought most Americans were god loving, god fearing people but I find it hard to believe the more I hear of the cruelty you inflict on people and animals. I don’t believe animals were put on this earth for us to use and abuse. I find it unethical and cruel to continue to use animals in experiments, especially now that we are living in the 21st century and have gained the knowledge of ways to experiment without the use of animals.

  • luz says:

And this is why America has lost faith in the military and government. As an animal lover, I’d rather be hurt or die than know that my treatment came from the suffering of others. Human or animal. This is horrible. These animals are defenseless. Why not hire people, and believe me there are willing participants, to do the job. This is inhumane! Thanks you just put us back three hundred years.

  • mylene says:

    unbelievable

  • Laura says:

    I. Find it unbelievable that these testings even be considered by a human being… We need to be more humane!!

  • amy says:

i called & got referred to the PR office 410-306-4489 – a very nice man said they’ve received thousands of emails & calls. sadly it didn’t sound like it would stop because it’s for military training.

  • Thomas says:

Was it not Black service men used for experiments by the military because they were thought to be unequal matches to white men? Lets find an alternative to violence.

  • Carrie says:

Stop using primates and other animals for testing procedures! there is no need to continue these tests. Clearly, if there was a cure to some disease, the government won’t allow it out to the public anyways so please show some humanity to these creatures that have feelings just as us humans do.

  • earl says:

Good Job Sir. The tests will help treat Soldiers on tomorrows battle fields. Keeping the Soldiers is more important……

  • Patricia Randolph says:

I write a pro-living wildlife column for the progressive Capital Times online newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin. It is time to end the obscene testing of monkeys and retire them to proper sanctuary. Your moral and ethical responsibility on the brief visit called life is to reverence all of the beautiful life of our planet and return our fellow wild brethren to their natural home. First do no harm.
