I Love My, Ummm, FusionDog?

Written by PETA | September 19, 2007

Hopefully everyone has checked out our new Animal Birth Control campaign by now, but if not, give it a peek. To promote it, we’re going to make some new stickers with the slogan “I love my [insert incredibly cute word to replace ‘mutt’ here].” We’ve all seen countless “I love my Golden Retriever” stickers, right? Well, that’s the idea, but instead of promoting a specific breed of dog, we’ll be promoting the best kind of dog in the world, the [insert incredibly cute word to replace ‘mutt’ here]!

One of the best things about working at PETA is that I get to share ideas with some of the most creative people I’ve ever met—the same people who came up with the iconic I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur campaign, and countless other initiatives that have fundamentally changed the way people view animal rights issues. But sometimes, just occasionally, when you get those people in a room together, they just can’t exactly nail it, and they have to ask for help. Well this is one of those times, so please help us.

Here’s our list of finalists. Please tell us which one you like best, and please add your own ideas to the mix. Have fun!

Muttle

  • hugo pottisch says:

“I love my natural dog.” I know I know.. too cryptic?

  • Brian Luznak says:

How about a bumper sticker that reads “I Like Our Mutt and I Cannot Lie.”

  • Hugo Pottisch says:

May I humbly ask why there already is a slogan “I love my Golden Retriever” but not one that states “I love my mutt”? A Golden Retriever could be a shelter dog but could a mutt be a breeder’s dog? Yes and no. Mutt owner do let their mutts breed but they generally do not do it for money. The spayneuter campaign has been targeting this audience in the pastpresent? If I understand PETA correctly the goal of this particular campaign is to instill some new awareness that purebreds have been breed on purpose as marketable brands for profit and that this is a questionable practise? The implications reach beyond shelters and the overpopulation crisis. The genetic health of the individual is as much in danger when incest and inbreeding are accepted by society. No offense I know many eg Golden Retrievers and I love them.. but they are not the brightest cookies on the block brain size is generally diminishing in purebreds for the same reasons as it would be in humans? Why do so many purebreds like German Shepherd die so soon? Unaltered wolves who can mate and have offspring with German Shepherd or other dogs live longer than the genetically inbred dog? “I love my mutt” sounds like a classic. “I love my shelter dog” is also great but for other reasons. I understand that the “incestfree dog” idea would shock many.. it would spark furry. people would go mad.. they would attack anybody who would make the indirect claim that their purebred was some sort of Frankenstein creation? PETA once again would prove that they in fact hate animals.. they would want all animals to go extinct! Animal lovers should be afraid of PETA.. protect your purebreds.. PETA wants to kill them all! Chances are that fewer people would stick it on their car as well? but it would be a “new” truth.. thrown into the black whole of social consciousness? If incest is not acceptable for humans or any wild species why practise it with “our best friend” only because he happens to be considered as our tradeable property? Dogs are not Ford Ts they are not fashion items! Incest is NOT cloning it is NOT copying it is NOT reproducing. It is genetically and morally WRONG and causes needless SUFFERING!

Only my opinion Well Jack imagination is great and there are certainly a lot of very good imaginative slogans suggested on here but imaginative cute or “cryptic” as Mike Quinoa mentioned does not really get to the most serious point that thousands of dogs are euthanized every day across the country in shelters who otherwise could possibly be adopted due to this campaign. And they have to be spayedneutered before they are adopted. It is true that the slogan “I love my shelter dog” does not apply to all dogs who are rescued from the streets bypassing the shelters but those dogs were fortunate to have caring people take them in. But I know it is more unfortuantely common for people take stray or unwanted dogs to the shelters thinking that they are going to be adopted yet they are more likely to be euthanized. “I love my adopted dog” which was one of my previous suggestions is still a bit vague since that can mean that they were adopted from personal rescuers. and thank goodness for those rescuers. Thank you rescuers! I adopted an unwanted shelter dog who was scheduled to be euthanized because “his month was up.” So what I am trying to say only my opinion and speaking for the shelter dogs is that shelter dogs should be priortized since they have the least chance their last chance to live. Therefore I favor “I love my shelter dog.” However if this ABC campaign is more focused against the breeders then I agree with “I love my mutt” Communicating to the public about this particular subject should be plain simple and clear. And basically whether people have shelter stray or rescued dogs or don’t even have any dogs at all that does not mean that they can’t display any slogan that is chosen. The important thing is the message of the campaign.

I love “diamond in the woof” but if that was on the back of my car no one would have any idea what it meant. I don’t think we need a cute new name for mutts I think mutt is a cute word already. Plus everyone knows what it means and anyone who’s ever had one can relate to the idea of mutt pride. I also like “I love my rescue dog.” “Shelter dog” doesn’t apply to everyone. My dogs are former street dogs that we took in bypassing the shelter. “Rescue dog” is more inclusive but then not all rescue dogs are mutts a lot of people rescue purebreds who have been abandoned then rehomed by breedspecific rescue groups. So if the goal here is primarily to boost mutt pride then we should Just Say Mutt.

  • hugo pottisch says:

Ok.. back due to popular demand “I love my interracial dog!”

  • Karen says:

Love Spoiled rotten rescue. Alsosome should be plural for those of us with several rescued dogs 3

  • hugo pottisch says:

To all who say “shelter” or “rescued” dog sounds best.. Yes it might but it also misses the point in making sure that the breeding stops? As long as people desire a certain look in their dog there will be insane Frankenstein Nazis who are tempted to produce the perfect race.. there will be breeding and there will be shelters! The sheer existence of so called purebreds is a sick testimony to humans. Yes we want to empty the shelters but we also want to stop the inbreeding and incest?? If we were to use “shelter” dog the rape and incest are not tackled at all? Plus I think it is time to mention that most mothers are NOT happy to lose ALL their children at birth? Be it cow chicken pig human or dog.. mothers want to see their young grow up for longer than hours!!??

  • hugo pottisch says:

I have another one “I love my nonArian dog”

  • Crystal says:

diamond in the woof is cute

  • hugo pottisch says:

I love my incestfree dog.. I love my 0 incest dog..

  • J says:

We called ours “Half german shepherd half traveling salesman” but I like rescue pet best.

  • Hugo Pottisch says:

Dear animals This one is easy “I love my noninbred dog!” or “I love my nonincest dog!” but I would also consider “My dog hates incest and inbreeding.” or “My dog’s mother did with a strangers and NOT her brother!” I mean seriously what is the opposite for “incest” or for “inbreeding”? The problem is that there is NO opposite no word for it as “inbreeding” and “incest” ARE the unnatural states. Either way great campaign! The term “breeder” and “purebred” should soon trigger the same emotions as “slave trader” and “fucking your own mother”.

  • Diana says:

I agree with Rachel. I think that shelter dog is the best way to get people to think about adopting a rescued dog from the local shelter.

  • shannen says:

I like diamond in the woof!!

  • Destin says:

i love my Fabulous Fusion Pup…

  • Courtney says:

I agree with using shelter dog or rescue…seems so much cooler than “my golden lab” My dog is a shelter dog bezengi mix and he’s the coolest dog ever. No one will get the other hybrid names. We want people to get the point and think of shelter dogs as the good “cool” thing to rather than paying thousands for a run of the mill breeded dog.

  • Mike says:

Vote For Custom Blend Canine’s in ’08!!

  • Colleen says:

    i love FusionDog

  • Kayla says:

Here in pittsburgh PA. We call our Mutts “Hienz 57′s” after the ketchup.

  • Noah says:

    Impurebred.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

I agree with Rachel. We’re so bombarded with messages that if it’s at all cryptic people won’t get it. Our longhaired calico adopted from the Toronto Humane Society is the most beautiful cat I’ve ever seen. Shelter Dog or Adopted Dog are the best.

  • David says:

I like the Custom Blend one…makes it sound prideful.

  • Wil says:

I vote for something that obviously refers to a dog. Muttle Mixhound FusionDog etc.

  • Ariel says:

That is so ironic! I was just about to submit the exact same as Rachel did. I love my rescued dog. I love my shelter dog. I love my adopted dog. Any one of them are clear and would hopefully inspire more adoptions from shelters which would rescue them from certain death. But I think that “I love my shelter dog” is the most profound.

  • kate says:

i love custom blend canine!! that is just too cute and people will know what it means!

  • Cory says:

The names are very creative however I have to agree with Rachel. Not everyone will know what they mean. Keeping it simple and clear for everyone to understand is a better idea. Everyone knows a what a rescued adopted or sheltered dog means and by using one of these names it will also bring attention to adopted sheltered rescued dogs. That’s my opinion.

  • Eva says:

Speckled Trash Hound is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while… though it does not apply to all rescues. How about a bumper sticker that says “Spoiled Rotten Rescue”? That definitely applies to my doggie.

  • Spay and neuter immediately, please says:

Bitsabecause they’re bits a’ this and bits a’ that.

  • Anonymous says:

I have a Bassett Hound mixed with an Australian Cattle Dog. Her super trendy name is…..Australian Bassett! Put that in your pipe Breeder Scum!

  • AnimalLib says:

PETA STAFF did not coin the term “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.” If you want proof… youtube.com searchHistory of the antifur campaign And in unrelated news mixhound.

  • Gloria says:

I love my grandpuppies. They know me as “Grammy”. If I ever get grandCHILDREN I will love them just as much. I hope!

  • Debbie says:

    Diamond in the WOOF!!!!

  • Canaduck says:

I agree with rachel frankly. These are cute but nobody is going to know what most of them mean.

  • Sophia says:

Oooh! I love my Custom Blend Canine!! It’s so obvious it means muttbut so originalI sense a squee over the adorable coming….

  • Amy says:

What about I ‘heart’ my Whatzzit… seeing as people are always asking what breed your dog is especially if it’s mixed.

  • BullyDawg says:

Isaac Mizrahi once used the term “haute couture” to describe his animal pal. Doesn’t this mean “oneofakind” or something similar?

  • Jaclyn says:

I actually like “I love my mutt” because everyone knows what a mutt is. And it’s not necessarily a negative word. But then I like Diamond in the Woof. Anyway here are some ideas I love my generic dog I love my no name brand dog I love my melting pot dog I love my maitai dog I love my remix dog I love my potpourri dog I got my office involved on the above list. Hey… It gave me the opportunity to promote ABC!!!

  • rachel says:

what is wrong with i love my rescued dog? or i love my shelter dog? or my adopted dog? with a bumper sticker people arent going to be able to figure out what fusion dog means it isnt like they can ask you while you are driving… but if the message is clear they will understand it and maybe think about it instead of just dismissing it.

  • kelly says:

FusionDog. I think you’ve got something there. Trademark it!!!

  • Lucas Solowey says:

    diamond in the woof!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Brianna Fritchey says:

I used to have a mutt that we called a Speckled Trash Hound because she was speckled and ate trash. She was such a funny dog until somebody stole her and used her as bait for dogfights.
