Live Sheep Export Hurts … Humans?

Written by PETA | December 8, 2010

By now, you’ve no doubt heard about the string of shark attacks on tourists off the Egyptian coast at the Sharm el-Sheikh resort, including one attack that killed a German woman. But do you know why the sharks suddenly started biting? Some officials believe the sharks were drawn to the area by a livestock ship that was allegedly dumping the carcasses of sheep into the Red Sea.

The Middle East is a frequent destination for ships from Australia carrying sheep who have been cast off by the wool industry or who were raised for lamb chops. (During last month’s Eid al-Adha festival alone, Australia exported 800,000 sheep to the Middle East.) That’s tens of thousands of sheep who are crammed onto huge, open-deck ships, packed together so tightly that many are often unable to reach food and water troughs. Hundreds may die during the grueling, weeks-long voyage.

A new investigation by Animals Australia documents the horrific fate of the survivors. Investigators filmed conscious animals who were thrown to the ground, trussed by all four legs, and slaughtered by having their throats cut open with dull knives.

Animals Australia presented its findings to Australia’s new agriculture minister, Joe Ludwig, who, one can only hope, will be more receptive than previous deaf, dumb, and blind administrations. Please write to Senator Ludwig and urge him to ban the export of live animals.

I am an Australian vegetarian who would like to comment about the live export trade. I am not condoning the treatment with regard to this particular case, and agree that this could have been acted upon in a quicker time frame. I do believe that the ship was registered in the Middle East, and there were legal issues about accessing the ship. I would like to point out that the government had recently applied a stop to the live export of cattle to Indonesia, after a video documentary was released, shot by Animals Australia. The video showed widespread cruelty of animals in Indonesian slaughterhouses, where the cattle were not only beaten and killed with blunt knives and being conscious whilst their throats were cut, but the use of boxes which casued the animal to fall and crack there heads on concrete surfaces, was shown across Australia. Such was the outpouring of public anger that the government had no option but to stop this trade, even against the wishes of the cattlemen in the north. The RSPCA is leading a campaign in Australia to end ALL live exports, and I thought that the readers should be aware that it is an institution for change, and does not live in the pockets of wealthy farmers. Thanks for your interest and on-going support for the sake of all animals.

Part of the problem is the body responsible for policing animal cruelty, the RSPCA, has farmers on its various State boards. There were two sheep farmers on the Western Australian RSPCA board, which is why the RSPCA turns a blind eye to live export. Live export originates in Western Australia and earns billions for WA. The RSPCA deals mainly with the 5% of animal cruelty to companion animals and does very little to stop the 95% of cruelty which is against factory farmed animals. The RSPCA cannot even admit there are factory farms – it still refers to “farms”. The RSPCA claims to want to help the 700,000 bobby calves slaughtered annually by the milk industry but will not even suggest that consumers might consider a cow milk alternative like soy. Its a joke.

Boycott companies who advertise their food as “halal.” These companies pay undisclosed fees for this certification, fees which support the continuing barbaric practices on sheep AND cattle.

Some officials also believe that a shark trained by mossad was placed in the red sea (Gulf News). Makes you wonder. I think were on to something (nice to not require the facts) well heck makes for a better story any way). Locals argue that it has been due to excessive fishing.

This is nothing new! They do this to goats right in the heart of Paris! Slit their throats with dull knives and leave them laying there until they bleed to death. How can we help the animals when people can do this legally? Soon it’ll be common practise in the U.S. Boycott companies who openly advertise their food as “halal.” Don’t let them profit off the animals’ suffering.

I’m Muslim and I don’t even believe in these inhumane acts that humans do upon innocent animals! They have just as much of a right to live as we do!

mr zamri Do you know the meaning of WRONG, how about CRUEL? You have no right to do that no matter what your mistaken ancestors wrote in the Quran. Killing a sheep will not absolve your sin. There are not enough sheep in the world……….

  • keith says:

Mr.Zamri, yes its easy to make such a statement when your not being abused or having your throat cut !!

  • William H. says:

It does seem a bit strange, but some things are inevitable.

  • mr zamri says:

  • Gala says:

I don’t get how a group of people can believe in one thing and clearly practice another. It’s atrocious to even think about. These types of things should be stopped as soon as possible.
