Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.

LiLo Has Dangerous Addiction …

Written by PETA | October 27, 2010

… to the meat of the countless cows, chickens, pigs, and other animals who suffer immensely because of her flesh fixes. So PETA is offering to help pay for Lindsay Lohan’s recovery from substance addiction—if she gives up meat. We’re also sending her the DVD “Glass Walls,” narrated by Sir Paul McCartney, and our vegetarian/vegan starter kit.

If she takes us up on our offer, Lindsay is certain to benefit too. In the U.S., eating animal-derived products exposes consumers to antibiotics, steroids, hormones, pesticides, E. coli, fecal matter, and other potentially harmful substances. A clean vegan diet can provide all the nutrients that a person needs—and all the fabulous flavors that a person wants—minus the unhealthy contaminants, saturated fat, and cholesterol that are found in animal flesh, eggs, and dairy. Plus, vegans have stronger immune systems than meat-eaters—and stay leaner than bacon and egg lovers.

And, of course, a crucial part of any recovery is showing charity to others. There’s no better way to be kind to thinking, feeling animals, the Earth, and one’s own body—three times a day—than by kicking an addiction to animal-derived products.

Sound mind, sound body—sounds great! We hope, hope, hope that Lindsay takes us up on our offer, but we also realize that addictions are hard to shake. Her many fans are watching every step she takes, so if she agrees to give up meat, she’ll not only help herself but also the many people she influences. We’ll let you know what she decides.

The money your supporters are giving you is supposed to be for the animals, not some idiotic human who only cares about herself.

  • Michelle says:

I would love to meet the people who come up with PETA’s ad campaigns – they never let me down and always shock me slightly. I love this about this organization – PETA are hilarious, clever and cutting-edge. If you are complaining about the tactics of this organization, perhaps it is because you simply don’t get it.

I can’t wait for the next PETA adventure.

  • msgoodwrench says:

People donate money to PETA every year to help animals….not Hollywood stars with drug problems. What difference is it going to make if Lindsay becomes a vegan inside rehab or outside of it. She has been a horrible role model for our children & probably has ruined her own career with her abuses.

DON’T GIVE HER THE MONEY PETA!!

  • Heath Watts says:

Why would you offer this fur wearing idiot $20K to go vegan? I have been a vegan for 10 years and am finishing my PhD in biogeochemistry at a top research university this year. I’d love to be a spokesperson for PETA and would be a stable, informed, and constant supporter of animal rights, as I have been for over a decade. Unlike many celebrities, I am not a vegan because it is trendy or for media attention. Why won’t PETA help me pay off my student loans, instead of wasting money on Lohan? In return, they can use my scientific knowledge to forward their cause.

  • John says:

    This is stupid….

  • Nikki says:

You cant one day wake up and love and care for animals lives because someone is paying you to say so. There’s are other ways PETA – there seriously are.

  • Olivia C says:

I took the pledge to veg and I got a thank you email. If LiLo takes it she gets $50,000 to pay for her own self-destructive behaviors?! Please tell me this is a joke. It definitely makes me reconsider donating to PETA, because that’s not a way I’m comfortable with donations being spent. If you’re going to give money away, let’s try a different outlet, that doesn’t involve bribery and rewarding someone’s self-destruction. I’m really saddened by this.

  • Rick says:

Linking PETA to Lindsay Lohan is a bad idea but even worse is that PETA is not emphasizing that the money would come from a single donor who is a supporter of Lohan. PETA needs to get out front and explain that the money would not be coming from ordinsry contributions. This is a PR nightmare that needs to be stopped.

  • Fernando says:

People keep talking about Linsday Lohan and her fans…. WHAT FANS!!!!!! HOLY CRAP… She has been in rehab… She will not inspire anyone… PETA… is about animals!! NOT CELEBS

  • Michele says:

Didn’t anybody read the comment from PETA in the “comments” section? It says that a PETA fan put up their OWN money. This offer is not coming from member or other donations. Read carefully next time before you get all twisted up. This is good publicity for veganism, even if Lindsay does not take them up on the offer.

  • peta001 says:

Why give money to someone who makes $1-7 millions a movie. Let her work and pay for the rehab like everyone else. I do not see PETA helping out people who are vegan/veg who lost their jobs are struggling everyday of their life to put food on there table. She can go to a government owned (FREE FREE FREE) or less expensive rehab, no one is making her go to Betty Ford.

  • Nina says:

I agree with most people here: Peta shouldn’t be funding anything related to Lindsay Lohan! WTH?? I’m sure there are more pressing causes that need this money from Peta.

  • Daniel says:

I am not a fan of her in particular but she is clearly in trouble and I feel for anyone who is suffering. I hope she chooses to cleanse her body of the drugs and dead animals she is poisoning herself with. AND, what you guys who are criticizing this decision don’t seem to understand is that Lindsay Lohan is a PRESS MAGNET. Publicity spreads awareness.

  • Dita says:

Go for it Lindsay! Think about the poor animals :-)

  • nickalsup21 says:

I understand some of the reasons behind doing this. But I do not think that PETA should put up the money for this because there are far better things that this money can go to! but if there is a person inside PETA willing to be her sponsor then yes go for it!!! I personally do think that she can become a great role model for young girls and guys who knows she could make a big change.

  • Vanessa says:

I just hope she gets better. I have people on the family that struggled with drugs… and it’s so hard! So, either way, if that offer helps her that’s enough for me. =) Good luck!

  • Gioia says:

Don’t waste your money on that rag!i’d ratghher you’d spend the money on getting more people to givbe up meat and fur!

  • Kristin Martin says:

I’m SURE Lindsay Lohan can pay her own bills…and if she can’t she’s an idiot. Put it the money to something thats actually worthwhile.

  • Madison says:

When I first read this news, I was saddened. PETA is such an amazing organization. How could you sponsor an unworthy drug addict for 50 000 dollars when there are better ways to donate this money. I no longer want to donate to PETA if this is where my money is going.

  • Chio Rojas says:

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!PAYING FOR LINDSAY’s REHAB BILLS???????? THIS IS RIDICULOUS….SPEND THAT MONEY ON SOME CREATURES WORTH SAVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Emmy says:

Very disappointed PETA. I thought you new better then to do this, speccialy to her. let her get her money somewhere else and put the money that the good people donate to ACCTUALY use, and not on drugs and alcy.

  • kelseybest says:

I just feel that Lindsay has soooo much money on her own, she could very well pay for rehab by herself. I would feel better about PETA helping her financially to give up fur and leather and exotic skins, personally, because lots of influentially celebrities are vegetarian, but I never hear of celebrities (that aren’t affiliated with PETA) that take stands against the cruelty in fashion. Either way, it seems like a waste to me because anything PETA could give her would seem like pocket change compared to her own wealth. Let’s pay an everyday person that’s dying from being so obese to go vegan – that to me is the epitome of food addiction.

  • Lisa says:

I think it is a great way for free publicity for PETA to offer Lindsay this choice… and good for Lindsay if she takes them up on it!

  • Erica Quirk says:

I make donations to PETA regularly to benefit the safety and well-being of animals. I vehemently oppose my dontations going towards any part of Lindsay Lohans life and makes me think twice about future donations. Come on PETA, it’s about the animals. Lindsay Lohan is no poster child for anything at this point in her life. Please, let’s leave Hollywood OUT of it, except maybe for Pam Anderson who is a great poster child for your cause.

  • Gisela says:

For the love of animals! ! Does Lindsay even own a pet? She will use this for publicity and fail like everything else she has done in her career! And where is the money coming from, our donations?????

  • RACHEL says:

Who doesn’t get this? PETA is already helping animals by getting the veg message out and the message that meat is an ADDICTION to break away from! If Lindsay takes the money, honey, she’ll tweet every meal she eats and all the fans will want to do the same. THAT helps animals big time!!!!

  • Fernando Balo says:

Are you kidding me.. Were going to pay a 50,000 bill for lindsay lohan. I thought PETA was about animal protection no paying for someone to be vegan.. It should be her choice to become vegan. She will not learn anything. If peta donates this money to her INSTEAD of animals I will no longer support them.. WOW

  • alberto says:

This is ridiculous!!!! It is by far the DUMBEST idea brought up by this .ORG! May I remind you PETA, you are a non profit organization. Meaning you collect money from donations people make to you in order to help and battle animal abuse/ cruelty. It is indignant that you would put to use the donations people make, to help a relapsing drug addict that does the least to help herself! If she needs help, STATE/ CITY programs are set up for those situations and for those that do NOT have the funds. DO WASTE PEOPLE’s DONATIONS ON HER PLEASE!!

  • Laura says:

NO,I cannot believe this! I will never donate to PETA again if this is where the money goes!

  • Joelene says:

I think it’s a great idea! The more celebrities that become vegan the better! If you had tons of money and a celbrity status, imagine what could you do to help PETA? Even being very public about not wearing items from designers who use animals products would be huge! That’s the point!

  • Shannon Upstate NY says:

If you waste my hard earned money on this fur wearing press whore I will NEVER come back. Why don’t you pay for the real vegans and support us that can’t sell a picture for or an interview after being released from rehab? This is unethical and very dissapointing to those that are vegan and make everyday hard choices for this cause. I am very let down. This is not a cause that should be turned into a joke. Your wasting OUR money. Shannon Casterline Upstate, NY

  • PETA Member says:

Shame on you PETA for offering our hard-earned money, which we gave you to help animals, to a drugged-out loser like Lindsay Lohan. Very poor judgment.

  • sheela says:

PLZ DONT DO THIS PETA ! KEEP THE MONEY I DONATED FOR THE CATS – DONT GIVE OUR MONEY TO CELEBRITIES IF YOU DO MANY PEOPLE WILL NO LONGER DONATE AT ALL TO PETA SORRY

  • Jocelyn says:

I think this will show everyone that if she can do it, then they can too.

  • Jacqueline says:

Giving money to Lilo is a ridiculous idea! I thought PETA was meant to help innocent animals..NOT a privileged/pampered addict. I like Lilo, but don’t believe she is indigent..I am certain she will,as usual, be able to find funds for any desired alcohol and drugs. Ms.Newkirk’s offer is an insult to all who try to do the right thing for helpless creatures. Why should she be allowed to squander our donations so foolishly? I will no longer give my money if Ms. Newkirk remains so irresponsible!

  • MIranda says:

I have to say once again that I cannot support this latest publicity stunt. First with Octomom and now this. This is not what donors think their hard-earned money is going to. Lindsay is an addict who always gets bailed out of her problems one way or another. Please don’t let this time be from you PETA. I understand your thought process but seriously don’t agree with it. You want her to go vegan so you are going to throw 10k her way and then another 10k? That is ridiculous. I’m positive there are other worthy organizations (sea shephard) for instance that could really use that funding. I am disturbed by this news and don’t know how much longer I can support PETA. I totally agree with Keith and I’m sure many other concerned people. Don’t do this! She did this to herself…The many, many animals that you could save did not ask for what they’ve been handed. Please, please don’t throw this money away. I really need to read your mission statement again and maybe you should too. Miranda

  • Puffy says:

Has everyone at PETA lost their mind???? why in the gawd would you give this idiot Lohan your money, she’s flush, are you really that gullible?…use your funds for the animals. In the future I’m giving my donations to other organizations, but hey, maybe Lohan will pay you back in triple when and if she goes back to work….but don’t count on it.

  • Ashley says:

What a clever way to spread the vegan message! Even if she doesn’t take the offer, what great media coverage for my favorite non-profit. Hope she goes vegan and becomes an advocate for animals. What a wonderful testimony she would be. :)

  • Miranda says:

Besides the fact that this is absolutely irresponsible of PETA to foolishly throw money out the window for someone who had to “break out” of rehab for a coca-cola, come on. This is why it’s so hard for me to convince my friends that PETA is an organization that really does good. This is pure stupidity. I am a vegan and could really care less if Lindsay is one. She is not a role model. She is a spoiled brat who will gladly accept the PETA donors money and spit in your face. @Christine OH Please “Poor Girl”. Go to your local shelter and then you can say “Oh, poor girl”

  • Lauren says:

PLEASE NO… she chose to spend her money on drugs and parties. Put the money towards the animals. I am sure she will get the money from someone else.

  • Jimbo Duggins says:

I just read about this on popeater. What a great idea PETA! Go VEGAN Lindsay!

  • Christine says:

This is awesome! Lindsay needs the help, and going veg would make her healthier, too! Go PETA, I’m glad you are doing this for this poor girl.

  • PETA says:

A PETA fan—who is also a fan of Lindsay—offered to put up the money because he believes, as does PETA, that Lindsay Lohan is the most visible example of a real addict and that if she can conquer her addiction to meat and cheese, anyone can. If she does, she’ll not only save animals but also her own health, and she’ll be an example to the millions of people who watch her every step. Under the contract that we are asking her to sign, PETA would require her to report what she’s eating and, based on her own experience, offer tips at least once a month on making the switch to a vegan diet—it would be a great value for the money.

  • Danielle says:

Hell no! She doesn’t deserve assistance from PETA! Give that money donated to you for the animals that need help! Ridiculous

  • CATHY says:

I think it is totally obsurd to give that money to Lindsay Lohan! I’m real sure Peta can find a more needy cause! As far as people she influences?! PLEASE!!!

  • Carla* says:

    Go Lindsay, go!!

  • Hot Carl says:

I find it disturbing that PETA is willing to dontate money to someone like Lindsey Lohan. Who does Lindsey influence? What kind of role model is she? She is an irresponsible druggy who cannot take care of herself.

Honestly PETA, please do not waste your money on her, there are sooooo many better options for you to put your money towards. So many other causes, people, more deserving of your help.
