‘Last Chance Highway’ Goes Faux

Written by PETA | August 18, 2010

Is that a real fur vest being worn by dog rescuer Shelly Bookwalter on Last Chance Highway, Animal Planet’s great new show about a trucking company that transports homeless dogs in the South to new homes in the North?

Inquiring minds need to know, and the word we received from an Animal Planet rep is that Shelly’s furs are faux. Phew, we knew it had to be so. After all, if you wouldn’t wear a dog, you wouldn’t wear a fox, would you?

I saw that really “fussy man” from NYC that C5ralatta is talking about.  He was walking his beautiful pit bull that he adopted from Shelley.  I stopped to talk to him and he’s so in love with that beautiful little dog.  And even though he works like most of us do, he has hired someone to come in every day to care for the dog and play with her as well.  I think Shelley made a good choice.

I have just been sick about poor Hope since watching the last show. The minute I saw she was going to NYC I knew it was a huge mistake and that was before I saw the adopter. She was more in love with herself for being such an amazingly wonderful person than she was with Hope. That girl shouldn’t own any pet. I pray Hope will be found and get a new home with someone equipped to take proper care of her. There is absolutely no excuse for a dog like that to accidentally get loose. I have a huge amount of respect for Shelly and the great work she’s doing. I do wish she would get someone with more qualifications to help her find the rescued dogs good new homesespecially cases like Hope. Rescue dogs have been through enough trauma. Their new homes should be the right ones so the poor dogs don’t have to suffer anymore. As for Shelly’s “fur” while I agree that it would be better not to wear anything that even looks like fur I think it’s enough to point that out to her nicely. We’re all in different places when it comes to learning about being a better friend to animals and being nasty just alienates people who only need a little education.

To those who aked about Hope yes she was adopted to a lady in New York City and then ran away. This lady did not listen to Shelleys reccomendation for a harness instead of a leash. Hope somehow made her way upstate and was adopted out yet again and she alledgedly escaped from this home also. I do not know specifics go to

  • Debbie says:

I was sickened when I read what happened to poor HOPE. Shelly is great to rescue dogs BUT obviously DOES NOT know how to place some “SPECIAL NEEDS” dogs. My heart crys for poor HOPE now probably dead in NYC

I agree 10000 with everyone who says she should not wear anything that resembles fur when you participate in an ANIMAL PLANET series about SAVING ANIMALS. I mean I’m glad to know its fake and what she does for dogs is really great but what a walking contradiction. To the obnoxious ALL CAPS post by ‘Mary Ann’ i would assume you work for the show or something… but even so you honestly don’t have the capacity to see how hypocritical it WOULD have been had she gone around saving tons of dogs but letting other innocent animals die so she can look cute? I’m sorry but that’s just sad.

Yeah PETA for looking into this. Thanks! I watched LCH for the first time since June last night. What a mistake. Shelly has great intentions for helping dogs but really lacks any animal behavior skills which is imperative when you’re constantly dealing with rescue animals. It appears she doesn’t contact professionals when dealing with dogs who have issues. Last night she adopted out a feral dog named Hope who she said needed quiet and a harness to a lady in NYC! Shelly also stated that the dog was a country dog but she felt Hope would be o.k. in the city. Hope ran away and has yet to be found. In the end it is only the dogs that suffer. I hope she changes some things on the show. Hopefully the criticism she is getting will only help her and the dogs in the long run.

On the 82110 episode they adopted out a white lab mix called Hope to a lady in NYC. I don’t think this was a good home for this dog who was very skittish and the adaption from country to city is just too much. At the end of the program they mentioned that Hope went missing. Has anything new been found on this dog?

REAL OR FAKE WEARING ANYTHING THAT EVEN LOOKS LIKE FUR SENDS THE WRONG MESSAGE. HOW MANY KIDS WATCHING THAT SHOW WOULD KNOW IF IT WERE REAL OR FAKE????

  • MARY Ann LaJoie-Sandroff says:

I WOULDN’T EVEN QUESTION WHAT SHELLEY WEARS. SHE SHOWS SO MUCH KINDNESS THAT NO WAY WOULD SHE WEAR ANYTHING BUT FAUX. I GUESS THE COMPUTER GENERATION DOESN’T LOOK IN ANYONES EYES ANYMORE. TAKE A LOOK AT SHELLEY SHE IS LOVING AND KIND INSIDE AND OUT. DON’T YOU DARE PUT HER DOWN.

  • Angela Andreos says:

I believe Shelly if she says the vest is faux. If you like the look of fur then wear faux. Some are so well made now you can’t tell the difference and I applaud her for stepping up and putting her money to good use in spaying and neutering all those unwanted dogs. Also taking the time and effort to find them decent homes.

  • Ashley Giarrizzo says:

whos to say that the fur really is fake?! If I were animal planet I sure as hell wouldn’t tell Peta that she was wearing real fur! this show has a good cause but I think the lady does it more out of publicity than actually caring. It is nice to see all the dogs get adopted though. And in response to C5ralatta yes! her outfits and makeup are hideous!

  • C5ralatta says:

Shelly Bookwalter took a young stray pit bull and placed it in a New York city apartment of a very fussy man who by his own admission worked all the time and he had never had a dog before. I shut this show off then. Talk about setting a dog up for failure. Bad adoptions are not good for the animals. All they create is more hurt. And faux or not that thing she wears is hideous beyond belief. Why make people even ask?

  • Chris says:

    Yes. Yes i would.

  • Rex's Mom says:

I commented on this very thing on another post on here. I was wondering if that fur collar on the coat she always wears was fake. I am very happy to know that all her furs are fake. I do watch the show and I think Shelly does a fantastic job. A lot of times the money to provide the animals vet care or for spaying and neutering comes out of her own pocket. She also sells real estate to make money to pay these vet bills. Too bad the people in the south according to Shelly don’t care about the stray dogs all over the place and the people who do have dogs don’t bother to get the spayed or neutered.

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

If I were on that show I would not be wearing anything that looked like fur or leather faux or not. It just does not look right.
