Katherine Heigl Puts Her Money Where Her Heart Is
At a press conference yesterday, Life as We Know It star and PETA T-shirt fan Katherine Heigl announced that she would be donating $1 million to fund low-cost and no-cost spay-and-neuter programs in Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The donation is part of the new “Compassion Revolution” campaign, which aims to combat companion-animal overpopulation by promoting spaying and neutering and encouraging people to adopt homeless animals instead of buying dogs and cats from pet stores.
In California alone, more than 800,000 animals end up in shelters every year. Approximately 500,000 of these animals must be euthanized, costing taxpayers $250 million annually. “What’s happening is not only inhumane and morally reprehensible, it’s economically irresponsible,” Heigl told The Hollywood Reporter. “Most people are unaware of what’s happening. We can start to change the existing paradigm.”
You bet we can! PETA is doing its part with its SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!) mobile veterinary clinic, which operates seven days a week and recently celebrated its 57,000th sterilization surgery.
