Joe Montana Loves a Good Veggie Burger

I got a story the other day through my “Super Bowl” Google alert that kind of surprised me. The story is about legendary San Francisco 49er QB Joe Montana having high blood pressure, but check out his great quote: “I would never have ordered a veggie burger before, but I just love a good veggie burger now,” he says. “It’s strange how your tastes change when you put your mind to it.”

Some people do it to stop cruelty to animals, some for the environment, and others to fight world hunger. And some eat veggie meals purely out of self interest. Whatever, I still think it’s pretty cool that Joe Cool is eating veggie burgers these days.

Here are some of our favorites, Joe.

I was a big meat eater before deciding to help end animal cruelty and now I think veggie burgers are delicious. I really can’t tell the difference sometimes between a veggier burger or vegan chicken patty or veggie “meat” and the real thing. The veggie meatballs out there are exceptional. You can make a positive change save animals and enjoy a great nutritious meal. It is possible people who aren’t willing to even try it are being very close minded. It’s not much of a sacrifice to help animals from being tortured.

  • Mars says:

I guess your not a real vegetarian then michele since you put them into a different catagory. Plantarian maybe.

  • Christopher Cochran MD says:

Brian Illness due to wheat exposure is extremely common in the United States. How very noble that you eat barely palatable food in an effort to save a cow’s life. If my actions make someone like you sick then that only emboldens me to continue. I do eat other foods. Mostly vegetables and fruits but also with lots of other wild game. Occasionally I will enjoy a slow smoked brisket or a thick rare ribeye or a delicious rack of ribs you don’t know what your missing chief.

  • Michele says:

Yeah I guess the legume and whole grains food groups somehow got eliminated right Ariel? I guess we will just have to eat things like cherry mud pies and broccoli with mud sauce from now on. I am actually going to be eating a yummy couscous salad for lunch today and apparently the recipe does NOT call for dirt! Imagine that… Brian awesome post!

  • Mars says:

Michele “To answer your question about why the anti’s are obsessed with coming on an ar site I think there are many reasons however I think it is mainly because they are concerned about the progress being made worldwide in the ar movement and they feel that they have to attack us every chance they get not realizing how ridiculous they end up sounding.” So why do AR’s go to CEO’s homesfurriers and the woods?

  • Mr. Chief says:

Ariel must RRRREEEEAAAALLLLYYYY hate Tradition to mention omnivores in a negative way

  • Mars says:

“BTW there are more choices for “veggies” to eat than just vegetables and fruits. ” Yep there’s always dirt.

  • Brian Luznak ; What's Up Doc? says:

Answer. Your Cholesterol. The debate over veggie burgers isn’t going to get anybody very far. And Doc I find it extremely hard to believe that you eat deer all the time but even if you did you don’t deserve a reward. It doesn’t matter how processed something is when what you’re eating isn’t a compassionate thing to eat before it was processed. And bye the bye the stuff the put into veggie burgers processed wheat flour is far better from the hundreds of unnecessary things in your meat. I can’t understand the self justification of killing something else that operates like us from the minds of sentient beings. I can only imagine what kind of fear hatred confusion and dim wittedness it takes to slaughter something that was once free to live of its own will. It makes me sick to know that people that don’t want to have to think about what they are eating think so much about how to defend that lifestyle that they have to find excuses to keep eating like that. Yuck.

  • Mr. Chief says:

Who the hell wants to live a lnger life. Not me I’d rather die from a disease than a natural disaster or a Covenant invasion of Earth Which I will kick alien ass

  • rojo says:

ariel but you mention them even when they aren’t posting what’s with that?

  • Mars says:

Ariel you definetly need to go back and relearn basic elementary reading. You don’t even know where one statement ends and another starts. Hint it’s called a period. Then again you’ll probaly think it only comes around once a month.

  • Michele says:

Ariel as usual you offer very clear explanations for those who are receptive. To answer your question about why the anti’s are obsessed with coming on an ar site I think there are many reasons however I think it is mainly because they are concerned about the progress being made worldwide in the ar movement and they feel that they have to attack us every chance they get not realizing how ridiculous they end up sounding. I also wonder if it is something like the “real men don’t eat quiche” nonsense from a couple of decades ago… Like it could be perceived as unmanly to admit that one actually liked the taste of veggie burgers. Obviously those who are truly selfconfident and I don’t mean arrogant”cock”y would not care if there were people who thought less of them for making a choice that was for health andor compassionate reasons.

  • rojo says:

    ariel sore point?

  • Christopher Cochran MD says:

Ariel You’ll be happy to know that I have returned from the sunset literally I was quail hunting in the Sonoran desert…I will be eating some deer burger this evening which I know is at least as nutritious as soy if not more. Soy burgers in an effort to make them palatable have added unusual substances like processed wheat flour. Deer burger has one ingredient…deer. I have a tendency to shy away from ultra processed foods. Veggie burgers fall into that category.

  • rojo says:

brian “I’ve never really had a veggie product I couldn’t tolerate” the really says it all.

  • Ariel says:

Next “ariel what is with your Dr. obsession? Lately all you seem to be talking about are the anti’s.” quote from an anti Well the last I knew this is an ANIMAL RIGHTS’ blog site NOT an antiblog site for the convenience of anti’s to spew out their hatred deceptions distortions stupidity ignorance and nonsense against or about ANIMAL RIGHTS’ and ar’s activists. So the appropriate question would be why do the anti’s have an abnormal obsession to comment on an ANIMAL RIGHTS’ blog site? And since this is an ANIMAL RIGHTS’ blog site then I as an ar’s activists SHOULD negate the ad nauseum obsessed anti’s who are not seriously interested in learning about ANIMAL RIGHTS’ Does that make sense now? Don’t like it? Leave.

  • Ariel says:

Ah! Reading comprehension escapes the space cadet once AGAIN! I’ll repost Misty’s ENTIRE post “Has anybody tried Morningstar Prime Grillers? Every meat eater who’s tried them says they’re better than their own hamburgers?” For the intentional readingdisorted space cadet the person ASKED the forum if ANYBODY has tried a certain brand therefore not indicating having taken a nationwide poll. Then indicates every meateater who the person apparently KNOWS andor knows of a few or many has tried the brand and says they’re better than… Did I twist it to conform to myself or indicate the person concocted it like the space cadet did? No. Get it? And we only do have the “now” and our number could be up at any time. However there is that possibility that we do have a longer lives ahead but if we contribute now towards illhealth conditions then it’s all the more harder to live longer in poor health than to live a long healthy life. And there is ALWAYS a GREAT possibility that a young person does have “tomorrow” which could be the day that heshe is suddenly dx’d with meateatnganimal fat related illnesses. People as young as in their 30’s have been dx’d with lifelong heart conditions due to the the above reasons and had to stop eating them or else. Nevertheless what a person chooses to eat is hisher own choice. However ultimately quality “now” is the wisest choice. BTW there are more choices for “veggies” to eat than just vegetables and fruits. Just wondering if the space cadet ever eats fruits and veggies.

  • halo snipe says:

Ariel If you didn’t understand Ray O’s analogy then you are not smart!

  • Mars says:

“Hmmm chance of contracting incurable braineating disease that causes you to slowly deteriorate until you die heart conditions and various other problems vs 10 min of enjoying a burger…Nope sorry still don’t think it’s worth it. P.S. You know BSE can spread to deer too right?” So what? Something going to kill me sooner or later and unlike most on here I don’t can’t my life in years as being a good life but living a good life today knowing that tommorrow may not come.Enjoy your mercuryDDT pesticidefertilizeddefoliant laden geneticaly altered and cloned veggies.Your screwed by poisons eating meat or veggies in todays world. “Yet did it ever occur to the space cadet that the person who posted that comment just might happen to personally know the people who tried them and in fact did say they are better?” Tsktsk Ariel your reading comprehension really sucks doesn’t it? I repost Misty’s for you “Every meat eater who’s tried them says they’re better than their own hamburgers!” Last time I checked I’m a meat eater so she included myself in that statement. She did not post every meat eater I know.

JOHN STEWART get the hell out of this site… you don’t belong with people who have a heart and feel compassion… you definetely belong in a farm factory instead of the animals and when the butcher is ready to cut you up and you’re still alive let’s see if you feel so spunky and courageous… you are the one who does not have any feelings… I feel sorry for you ….

  • rojo says:

ariel what is it with your Dr. obsession? Lately all you seem to be talking about are “anti’s”.

  • rojo says:

apple chronic wasting disease CWDin deer isn’t the same as BSE however it does involve prions. In short BSE doesn’t spread to deer. It is a seperate disease. It is not known whether it is transmissible to humans that eat it.

  • Ariel says:

Has any ar’s activist ever taken a course in “Philosophy for Dummies” that can help me to understand the philosophical Ray0 question “If meat never pretends to be soy then how can soy pretend to be meat?” post 101907 538pm. That’s too deep for me!

  • Brian Luznak Where Have All The MD's Gone? says:

Personally I enjoy the Smart Brand Tofu stuff even though I haven’t researched the product all that much. I don’t eat the veggie burgers at Burger King but that’s cause I don’t go there. I’m glad Burger King is moving a step forward but I still think we should ban all fast food until they get their “shit” in better order. Pun totally intended. Um I’m glad to hear that Joe Montana likes veggie burgers. I’ve never really had a veggie product I couldn’t tolerate and I gotta say if someone out there says they can’t stand them at all then I don’t think they’ve even tried one. But oh well people are better off from staying away from heavily processed foods period. Every once in a while is ok but even if it were a veggie burger if you ate it every day three square meals a day it would probably do you worse in the long run. But I was wondering if anyone else has heard of the smart brand foods and if they know anything more about the company? Just curious.

Amy’s California garden burgers! The best!

  • Ariel says:

“Has anyone tried the Morningstar Prime Grillers? Every meateater who has tried them says they’re better than their own hamburgers!” posted 101807 1222pm. Then we have the space cadet come along in post 101907 1009pm who took the liberty of partially quoting the first post and used it to make another outburst by being “doubtful.” Yet did it ever occur to the space cadet that the person who posted that comment just might happen to personally know the people who tried them and in fact did say they are better? Oh btw CJDisease can have the advantage over venison burgers.

  • Ray-O says:

I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again. Soy is soy. Meat is meat. Soy should act like and meat should act like meat. If meat never pretends to be soy then how can soy pretend to be meat?

  • Apple says:

Hmmm chance of contracting incurable braineating disease that causes you to slowly deteriorate until you die heart conditions and various other problems vs 10 min of enjoying a burger…Nope sorry still don’t think it’s worth it. P.S. You know BSE can spread to deer too right?

Hi kelly! Speaking about our resident “doctor” “Dr. Redneck”LOL seems like he rode off into the sunset since he hasn’t been giving us his “valuable” “highly sought” opinions lately. but I wouldn’t doubt if he eventually finds his way back This is funny while I was doing some unrelated research the other day totally by accident I saw the name “Christopher Cochran MD” highlighted in the introduction to a ws. So I hit the ws and it was a ws about “boring comments.” I kid you not Well lo and behold wouldn’t you know… So if that’s OUR one and the same then it seems he makes more “rounds” on blog sites than he does with his “patients.” Oh well if the “harvestologist” comes back I wouldn’t doubt he’ll start with his whining again about activists being bigots. But that’s good because he’ll have less time to do his animal “harvesting.”

  • Mars says:

“Every meat eater who’s tried them says they’re better than their own hamburgers!” Doubtful but I’ll take the first position then and still it’s a yuck.Nothing out there can beat my wild boar and venison burgers.

  • kelly says:

Thank you Ariel for a very funny post about our very own Dr. Redneck!!

  • Maureen says:

People who try to mock vegans by comparing plants to animals are using a pathetic and heard it a thousand times before argument. If they insist on equating life forms why not equate primates to humans at least that would have a solid scientific starting point.

  • Michele says:

Harvey’s and Kelsey’s in Canada make AWESOME veggie burgers. And Lick’s Garden Burger is now available in grocery stores as well as at their restaurants they even sell a kid’s size!.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Lick’s in the greater Toronto area makes a great Nature Burger. A friend of mine just had an angina episode and had to do the nuclear stress test. Anyway he’s eating the Lick’s Nature Burgers and says they’re 95 there.

  • Ray-O says:

John actually I acknowledge that animals DO have feelings and DO feel pain but I don’t need to be compassionate towards a chicken because hey neither would a carnivore. Dogs and cats however don’t need to die if they have a master. We should treat them better but until then a lot of them will have to go to sleep.

  • BullyDawg says:

So John when you kick a dog and I’m sure you’ve kicked one in your lifetime and he yelps what the hell is that? The equivalent of a sqeaky toy? Or do the dogs you kick have no response?

  • Misty says:

Has anyone tried the Morningstar Prime Grillers? Every meat eater who’s tried them says they’re better than their own hamburgers!

  • Craig says:

Dumb ass John Stewart said Hey I am so sick of you people. Animals do not have feelings. So what is the problem for using them for our needs and wants. You are a vegetarian right? Plants are alive to too. So you are killing preciuos life. It never ceases to amaze me just how STUPID and IGNORANT some people are. Just because ‘animals’ are different than us does NOT mean they don’t have feelings. It’s an IGNORANT P.O.S like you that keep perpetuating this notion. ALL animals are sentient they are aware of their surroundings have emotions wants and needs. Your ‘killing a plant’ defense just does NOT hold water until a plant is more or less the same as me biologically I will keep eating plants. A plant does NOT have lungs kidneys liver eyes bleed the same color blood or can vocalize and move under their own power. So why don’t you do us all a favor and STFU till you actually know what you’re talking about.

  • VegChick says:

Okay John technically you’re a sentient being as well so lets put you in a meat grinder and see how much you feel. Deal?

  • Ariel says:

“Animals do not have feelings.” That comment goes way beyond stupidity! No doubt in my mind whatsoever that anyone who believes animals don’t have feelings is a dangerous psychopath! And I seriously mean a dangerous psychopath! Sometimes I really think that these anti’s are emailing from a psych hospital. And I am serious! And if they’re not then they desperately need to be in one!

  • John Stewart says:

Hey I am so sick of you people. Animals do not have feelings. So what is the problem for using them for our needs and wants. You are a vegetarian right? Plants are alive to too. So you are killing preciuos life.

  • Vegoconics says:

Good for Joe Montana. However I do have a comment on the list provided that shows some of your favorite veggie burgers no where on that list is a vegan restaurant! The top 4 you have listed do directly or indirectly support slaughtering of animals they serve meat. Then when I click on the link that says “Best of the Rest” you have listed Denny’s there! What happened to DeadlyDenny’s campaign? Not sure what you are trying to support here!

  • Mars says:

Nothing wrong with eating veggie burgers but I disagree on the good part. I tried the Boca and Morning Star and YUCK!

  • Ray-O says:

There’s such a thing as a GOOD veggie burger? I think that highblood pressure’s got you lightheaded. It’s the imperfect human body which forces us to eat crap like this.

  • Ariel says:

Surely we should expect “Christopher Cochran MD” to refute the article under “story” Look out Dr. Rippe cardiologist and assoc. prof. at Tufts U. School of Med. CCMD really “knows” his stuff about blocked arteries and hypertension! And surely he will have plenty of support by the “expert” meateating anti’s. They really “know” their stuff too!

  • Gen says:

Veggie burgers are delicious! I love seeing the different vegetables they’re made of. what other fast food stores sell them? besides burger king?
