Jillian Michaels: Ringling Is the Biggest Loser

Written by PETA | July 21, 2011

In a protest called “massive” by a local television station, author and fitness guru Jillian Michaels led the charge alongside producer Sam Simon, Twilight‘s Christian Serratos, The Secret Life of the American Teenager‘s Renee Olstead, and hundreds of demonstrators outside the Los Angeles Staples Center to call attention to the abuse of elephants by the Ringling Bros. circus

Numerous elephants used by Ringling Bros. suffer crippling arthritis—a leading cause of euthanasia of captive elephants—because they don’t get the freedom of movement and exercise that they need.

“Their enslavement by the circus means [elephants] spend their lives in chains and stuffy train cars with no freedom to roam, and they suffer painful, fatal ailments that come from such a stressful existence,” says Michaels.

Other compassionate celebrities who supported PETA’s protest via Twitter include Sophia Bush, Kellan Lutz, Alicia Witt, and Sasha Grey, among others.

Please never attend any animal circus performance, and contact PETA’s Action Team to help plan your own demonstration when the circus comes to your city.

I think people should embrace Cirque De Soeil or Cavalia instead.

  • Cassandra says:

As a child, I went on a class trip to a Ringling Bro. circus. I witnessed first hand a handler beating an elephant on stage for defecating. No one around me saw things my way, but keep fighting! Enlightenment comes slowly sometimes, but it will come.

  • carolyn book says:

Ringling Brothers needs to let their elephants go to sanctuaries. Their business causes horrific animal suffering. Let the animals go!!! Cirque du soleil does not use animals.

  • Chris says:

The first thing that needs to happen is people have to stop going and seeing these shows. No revenue means no reason to imprison animals in the first place. If it’s not profitable they won’t do it. First reach the people not the company’s.

  • mike verrecchia says:

don’t forget the abuse of the tigers as well

  • Patty Bowers says:

JOIN the protest- distribute PETA’s excellent circus leaflets to your friends, family, co workers, neighbors and everyone you can. EDUCATION IS EVERYTHING. People need to KNOW what goes on behind the scenes. It’s inhumane and brutal.

  • Nancy Radon says:

We now know that the animals are suffering and the circus can be just as good without them. Use more acorbats, etc. and you will do just as well.

  • Satish says:

Thank you for all the compassion you guys have for saving the elephants.

Glad to see people protesting for such a great cause. You couldn’t pay me to ever step foot in a circus that uses animals!!! It’s disgusting and horribly cruel! Hopefully one day ALL people will realize that animals aren’t here for our entertainment…it saddens me that so many don’t see that :( GO PETA!!!

Well done.. Elephants need protecting. What chance do animals have when you have stars that live in LA like Victoria Beckham designing and selling handbags made of Croc skin. She is charging almost £ 9.000 pound. For the sake of having a beautiful creature on her arm.. She wants to make it America. Sorry if this is what making it America.. You can keep her x

  • Rachael says:

I watched in horror at the photos/videos or the elephants at Ringling..Chained & held prisoner for years and tortured by men/women who get off on the power of tying up an animal and beating it..a complete inbalance of power..this is a very public display of animal abuse, we should all be outraged…enough. Give these animals life…not torment !

  • Adriana Fariña Seoane says:

Deberían prohibir todos los espectáculos con animales.

  • Matthew says:

This is such an outrage and if I had it my way there would never do another show or touch another animal again. My family will never go to their shows. They need to go ou5t of business.

  • loverofanimals says:

Many thanks to all who went! May we never stop and hopefully end this pain and suffering in these animals one day, soon, too:)

  • Christine says:

This is great, and shows the word is spreading about the horrors of Ringling. Its time to move out of the dark ages of “entertainment” and into the 21st century where only humans are used in circuses. Humans can choose to torture themselves; animals can’t. Please boycot the circus, and put Ringling out of the business of torturing animals for profit! Vegans rule!

  • karine says:

NO animals in Circus, NONE, let them free.

  • Carla* says:

    Wow!! What action, love it!!

  • colleen says:

I am so glad to see so many people at this Ringling Protest!! I did my first Ringling protest in February and we had about 30 people. I still believe most of these people that are going to the Ringling Circus just don’t know what happens. Keep getting the word out and Never Give Up!!!

  • love says:
