Japan Suspends Whale Massacre

UPDATE: The Japanese have officially cancelled the whale hunt and ended this season early.

Fans of Whale Wars have already been dazzled by the intrepid folks of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, but their latest efforts to disrupt the horrific killings of marine animals by Japanese whalers have been so successful that Japan has announced that it’s suspending its annual whale slaughter—and may call the fleet back home entirely! Bravo to Sea Shepherd for a job well done—and we know that you’ll keep up the great work until whales, dolphins, and seals are safe.

By the way, Whale Wars fans should also check out PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk’s book, One Can Make a Difference, which includes a first-hand account from a Sea Shepherd crew member, along with the stories of others who are, well, making a difference (just like you can).

i hope people understand the consequences of the iol spills as well. they have a huge impact on all ocean life. i think often of how big a toll it has on the dolphin population, my favorite sea animal!

  • Florence Paris says:

Thank you thank you a million time for all your efforts to save the marine life and most specially those beautiful whales. I live in Maui and during their seasonal stay in Hawaii they devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to their calves. Again all my best aloha from my heart for protecting such a wonderful life!

What compassionate, wonderful people to have the guts to go out into deep ocean water and save marine life. You are the real heros in life. The whales die a horrific death at the hands of the Japanese, it is a disgrace that whaling ships are even allowed in the water. Don’t let your guards down for a second or the Japanese will be back killing whales again. Thanks so much for all you are doing, it is truly appreciated.

  • Krissie says:

Thank you for all you do. I cannot believe whaling goes on or any type of animal abuse! It is sickening! We need more people like us who care to help put this to a end!

Bravo to Captain Paul Watson and the SSCS, and all their supporters. Just like Ingrid Newkirk, Captain Paul gets the point across in an impassioned and eloquent way. Both give me hope that the future will be bright for animals.

Bravo!! Sea Shepard! Cruelty can be stopped…don’t think we can’t make a difference. Every little thing we each do can end the horrible way humans treat animals.

Last year, our square dance group danced in the Whale Days parade at Dana Point, California, to help celebrate the whale migration. I wore a Sea Shepard tee shirt paired witha a long denim skirt and it attracted a lot of attention. I will be wearing the same outfit this year. The outfit stands out because all of the other ladies are very frilly and this is decidedly plain and the Sea Shepard logo attracts attention.

Whales are such a majestic creature, so it’s good to see that the whaling industry has started to understand that they are only hurting things rather than making them better.

  • Rex's Mom says:

WOW!!! I can’t believe this! What wonderful news. I watch Whale Wars all the time on Animal Planet and hopefully that show will go off the air if the Japanese stop hunting whales. And I am sure the Sea Shepherds wouldn’t mind their show going off the air if it will save the lives of whales. I just hope the slaughter stops forever!
