Ingrid Arrested in India for Blindfolding Gandhi Statue

Written by PETA | January 18, 2008

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk has been in India for the past couple of weeks on a tour for the Indian version of her book “50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals.” We’ve been getting daily updates about the demonstrations, rallies, and educational events she’s been attending to fight animal abuse in India, and it’s all been pretty amazing stuff. But this morning’s news was the most interesting yet:

According to India’s national newspaper, The Hindu, Ingrid was arrested last night in Coimbatore for blindfolding the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Park to protest the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to legalize a stupid macho ritual called jalikkattu, in which a crowd of men take turns taunting and abusing a terrified bull, who is forced to drink alcohol and deliberately agitated by having chili peppers rubbed in his eyes before being released into the crowd.

According to the news reports, Ingrid urged children to speak out against jallikattu, arguing that the cruel blood sport was a direct violation of Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. Ingrid described the protest as a symbolic action to close Gandhi’s eyes “towards the horror meted out to animals in the name of jallikattu.”

After detaining her for some hours, Indian police eventually allowed Ingrid to leave the city, and her Indian visit is going ahead as scheduled. I’ll keep you posted …

It is 2010 and yet bulls have died in name of sport and entertainment. It is irony that man prays to this creature and also tortures it to death

Ingrid good job trying to help the animals but blindfolding Gandhi? and getting arrested? I think that went a bit too far. What a disgusting sport! Just so cruel! But may I ask why do they rub pepper in their eyes? And is the bull killed after? Just because the bull looks tough doesn’t mean it isn’t extremely frightened inside. Just so HORRIBLE! Really that government’s gotta wake up and really know that what they are doing is ABSOLUTELY wrong and there is no excuses for it.

My goodness Maya I would not have known what to do and how to find the homeless cats home that had found her way to our home. She traveled 3 miles from her home when she was scared by two wild grandkids and she took off from this elderly husband and wifes My daughters helped by networking and she was home once again the gradkids. Thank you so much maya.

Ingrid I don’t know where the world would be without you. You are a true angel for the people and the animals. I support your work 100. This is just horible. Animal abuse in any form is just unacceptable and it should be stopped. I don’t understand why people are acting the way they do. There is no compassion or respect for living things. GOD Bless YOU!!!!

hi spay obviously I can’t speak for maya my take on her disagreements with peta would be that they bring all animal related groups into disrepute when they go over the top death by association. Which ultimately is not the best outcome for animals.

It’s cool rojo I didn’t think you were picking on me. I agree that Maya has the ability to be a great animal advocate. I just don’t understand why she spends so much time on PETA’s website and blog when she so clearly dislikes the organization. There are more moderate groups out there that anyone who is offended by PETA’s antics could get on board with.

  • rojo says:

spay i can understand your feelings on the issue. maya does not seem to have much time for peta but I do think she is genuinely for animal rights and her comments are generally valid. My thoughts on are that using words like smugnesscringe demonstrate that what someone has said is reasonable and people don’t really disagree but dislike how they said it. More importantly don’t like that they said it at all. I do agree that maya doesn’t have to rub it in about not donating to peta but perhaps the question really should be why someone with such an obvious love of animals who’s vegetarian and is devoting her working life to study them is unable to support peta’s general antics. I don’t mean to pick on you personally spay. That’s not my intent. cheers

  • Spay and neuter immediately, please says:

Rojo the only message I ever get from Maya is putting PETA down while bragging about herself and pointing out ever chance she gets that she does not donate. That is why I find her tiresome.

  • Peace to You says:

Very good Rojo…you speak the truth and you have the ability to see into the real problem here. Well done…

  • rojo says:

spay and lynda you appear to be shooting the messenger not the message. Demonstrated when I see words like “ivory tower” and “cringe” but no argument against differing views only personal invective. Peace to you said it all”She is thoughtful and knows her facts” The truth hurts but it will set you free.

  • Peace to You says:

I feel admiration for all who come here in the spirit of sharing information experiences and points of view which lead us in a positive direction and by doing no harm to one another. Peace…

  • lynda downie says:

To ‘Peace to you’ We simply differ in who we feel admiration for. For me that’s hands down Kickass and Ana. Lynda To ‘Spay and neuter immediately please’ Thanks that was really nice of you. Lynda
